Hey! Yeah! A kind of cheerful greeting, to express delights or congratulations. It is a colloquialism.Definition:
A colloquialism is an informal expression used in spoken English. Colloquialisms are never used in formal English or in writing, but are often used in conversations. Of the colloquialisms, we can find some expressions are exactly the same as the Chinese sayings.1. to go in one ear and out the other
“左耳朵进,右耳朵出”
e.g. How many times have I told you to get to work on time? But my words just go in one ear and out the other.
2. in hot water
“水深火热” “处于…麻烦中”
e.g. He’s in hot water.But in most cases, we can’t relate them to the Chinese sayings. 1. pull one’s leg “拖后腿”
meaning: joke with someone
2. a no-brainer “没大脑的人”
Meaning: something easy to understand
3. green fingers “绿色的手指”
Meaning: be good at
4. all thumbs “所有的拇指”
Meaning: very clumsy (笨拙)
5. rain cats and dogs “天上下猫与狗”
Meaning: rain heavily.
