Step 1 Warm – up
3 Teacher asks “ Where were you last --- ” and help the students answer “ I was at --- , I was ----.”
Step 2 Presentation
Bring in some photos showing people celebrating on birthdays or at festival , e.g. New Year , Christmas ,etc. Ask the students to bring similar photos too if they have any .
Put the photos on the board . Ask the students if they can tell what festival it is in a photo . Then ask them to talk about what the people were doing in each photo .
Chose a student and ask Where were you on your birthday , the student should answer truthfully .
Step 3 Practice
1 ( CAI ) Ask the students to repeat the words .
2 Ask the students to work in groups of four . They should role-play the conversation between Pat , Koko , Bob and Tim talking about where they were and what they were doing using the picture cues .

Ask the students about good times that they remember .
Ask the students to recall what they were doing then . Have some students tell the class using the structure I was --- ing when I heard the news --- .

Show Transparency . Point to the pictures and talk about what is in each picture . Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette and have the students to read it .
Tell the students to match the children and the activities according to the conversation .
Ask the students to read the dialogue and the words in the children’s thought bubbles below . Tell them to complete the dialogue using the words provided . Ask two students to read out the dialogue for the class to check the answers .

1 Show some pictures and let the students make some sentences with “ When + past continuous tense” .

Ask a student What were you doing when I came in The students should answer I was sitting on my chair . Have the students practise the stucture by asking them more questions , e.g. What were you doing when your father came home last night What were you doing when the school bell rang
Tell the students to work in pairs . They ask their partner what they were doing when something happened . Give the students some time to ask and answer questions. Then ask the students to tell the class about their partner .
Step 3 Practice
Show Transparency . Tell the students to read the conversation .
Have the students read the words in the people’s thought bubbles . Ask them to work in groups of three to role-play Tim’s parents and Koko and act out the dialogue using the words provided .
Listen to Part B3 and finish the exercise in this part .

Step 1 Warm-up
Ask the students “ What were you doing when --- ” , and let some students answer it .
Step 2 Presentation
Ask the students about what present they got for their birthday and what present they want to get .Explain that in the story Jill got a surprise and she wanted to find out who gave the present to her .
Point to the pictures and ask the students if they can guess who gave the present to Jill before they read the story .
Play the flash of Part C for the students and ask them to repeat the sentences .
Ask the students some questions , e.g. What was Jill’s mother doing when Jill got the present What was Jill’s father doing when Jill got the present to check the students’ understanding of the story .
Step Practice
1 ( Part D) Ask the students to read the story again .
2 Tell the students to read the questions and then answer them according to what they have read in the story . Then check the answers with the students .

Step 2 Presentation and practice
1 (Part E) Write the symbols for the sounds on the board .Write the words on the page under each symbol. Ask the students to tell you other words with the same sounds and add them to the list .
2 Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette and ask the students to listen to the sounds and the words .
3 Say the words slowly and clearly . Check that the students are making a distinction between the sounds and pronouncing them correctly .
4 Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette again . Ask the students to listen to the rhyme and join in with the words of the rhyme the second time .
5 Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette . Ask the students to listen to the words and then write them under the correct symbols .
6 (Part F) Let the students look at the picture and then read the article carefully .
7 Ask the students to label the people in the picture according to what they read in the article . Then check the answers with the students .
8 Ask the students to look at the pictures on page 65 . Tell the students to choose one event and three people by ticking the boxes .
9 Ask the students to write a short article for the newspaper based on the event and the people they chose . When they write they can use the format provided at the bottom of page 65 and also refer to the article on page 64 .
10 When the students finish writing , ask some of them to read out their article .
