第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)

The human nose has given to the languages of the world many interesting expressions. Of course, this is not surprising. Without the nose, we could not breathe or smell. It is the part of the face that gives a person special character. Cyrano de Bergerac said that a large nose showed a great man—courageous, courteous, manly, and intellectual.
A famous woman poet wished that she had two noses to smell a rose! Blaise Pascal, a French philosopher, made an interesting comment(评论) about Cleopatra’s nose. If it had been shorter, he said, it would have changed the whole face of the world!
Historically, man’s nose has had a principal role in his imagination. Man has referred to the nose in many ways to express his emotions. Expressions concerning the nose refer to human weakness: anger, pride, jealousy and revenge (报复).
In English there are a number of phrases about the nose. For example, to hold up one’s nose, expresses a basic human feeling—pride. People can hold up their noses at people, things, and places.
The phrase, to be led around by the nose, shows man’s weakness. A person who is led around by the nose lets other people control him. On the other hand, person who follows his nose lets his instinct guide him.
For the human emotion of rejection, the phrase, to have one’s nose put out of joint, is very descriptive(形象生动). The expression applies to persons who have been turned aside because of a competitor(对手). Their pride is hurt and they feel rejected. This expression is not new. It was used by Erasmus in 1542.
This is only a sampling(抽样) of expressions in English dealing with the nose. There are number of others. However, it should be as plain as the nose on your face that the nose is more than an organ for breathing and smelling!

At Harton College, an English boarding school(寄宿学校) for boys, there are many rules. Fifteen-year-old Bob Sanders often breaks these rules.
The boys can go into the town in the afternoon after classes, but they must return to the school at six o'clock. One afternoon Bob walked to the town. He looked at the shops and then went to the cinema. After the film, he looked at his watch. It was after eight o'clock. He was a little worried. He walked back to Harton College as fast as possible.

But it was quite dark and he couldn't climb up the wall very easily. There he saw another open window sill (窗台) and jumped into the room. Just then he heard a noise. Then someone turned on a light in the corridor. Bob looked around and then hid under the sofa. One minute later, Mr. Mannering, the headmaster, came in. Tom was rather looking forward to his first journey by Tube, as the underground railway in London was called. He had heard a great deal about it from his friends who had already been to England. They all advised him not to travel alone the first time. But Tom is the kind of person who never listens to anyone’s advice. It is not surprising; therefore, that his first journey by Tube was not a great success.
Tom entered the station shortly after five o’clock in the afternoon. This is a bad time to travel in London, both by bus and train, because crowds of people go home from work at this hour. He had to join along queue(长队) of people who were waiting for tickets. When at last his turn came, he had some difficulties in making the man understand the name of the station he wanted to go to. The people in the queue behind him began to grumble(抱怨)impatiently (不耐烦地) at the delay. However, he got the right ticket in the end; by asking several people the way, he also found the right platform. This was packed(拥挤) right with people. He did not manage to get on the first train, but he was able to move nearer the edge of the platform so as to be in a better position to get on the next one. When this came in, emerging from the tunnel with a terrifying roar, Tom was pushed forward on to the train by the rush of people from behind. The doors closed and the train moved off before he was able to get his breath back. He was unable to see the names of the stations where the train stopped, but he had taken the precaution of counting the sixth along the line.
When the train reached the sixth station, Tom got off, feeling relieved as his journey had been so easy. But he was alarmed to see that he had got off at a station that he had never heard of! He did not know what to do. He explained his difficulty to a man who was standing on the platform. If people do not find other places to visit, some experts fear that many national parks may be ruined in a few years. In 1916, thirteen national parks were opened for the public to enjoy. Our government set aside these wilderness areas, so people could see nature. They could also camp, horseback ride, or fish.
Today, there are thirty –two national parks. But there is not enough space for all those who want to visit the parks. In some of them, cooking and camping spaces have to be ordered for in advance. Many parks do not have enough water. Worst of all, the great numbers of visitors are destroying the natural beauty they came to see.
Therefore, many people are now visiting national monuments. Many of these areas also have camping grounds to stay overnight. Over fifty national monuments are found in the west alone. Glacier Bay in Alaska is even bigger than Yellow Stone. People who take a trip next summer should check a list of national monuments.

Dear Steve,
I’m so pleased to learn that you and your classmates are learning Chinese. I’d like to recommend the following two dictionaries. The English-Chinese Chinese-English Dictionary is really a good one for beginners. It has 18 000 English words and 20 000 Chinese words. Besides plenty of examples, it has many notes telling you how to use a word. Xinhua Dictionary is the most popular Chinese dictionary, and it has a vocabulary of 10 000 words. It may also be useful to some advanced learners of Chinese. OF the two, ECCED is the more expensive, costing 52 yuan, and XD costs 11 yuan.
Please let me know if you want me to buy these dictionaries.
Yours,
Li Yue
