Unit 2 Growing Pains
Period 1 Welcome to the unit
Teaching Aims
1. To introduce and develop the theme of growing pains
2. To develop speaking ability bu talking about the problems between teenagers and parents
3. To form a positive attitude towards growing pains and learn to solve them.
4. To learn to be cooperative and helpful when working together.
Teaching Difficult Points
1. Get students to understand what growing pains means.
2. Talk about misunderstandings and problems between parents and children.
3. Enable the students to practice their spoken English.
4. Help students to form a positive attitude to towards relationships between their parents and them.
Teaching Methods
1. Discussion in pairs or in groups.
2. Task-based in-class activities.
Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
Let students prepare a piece of paper and answer some questions about the relationship between them and their parents.students can just write down”Yse”or”No”on the paper.
1. Do you think you parents understand you
2. Do you often quarrel with yourparents
3. Do they always force you to do things you don’t like to
4. Do they ask for your opinions over some issue
5. If you have some problems or feel upset,will you choose to talk to your parents
After students finish the questions,collect the papers,and select some papers to see how they answer the questions.Then lead students to the topic of this unit---growing pains.
Step 2 Discussion
Ask the students to have a discuss about the question:
What are growing pains (pair work)
Teacher will give 5 minutes to let the students talk with their partner
Sample answer:Growing pains happen when kids are between the ages of 8 and 15. Growing pains stop when kids stop growing.Growing pains also mean the troubles and difficulties that children meet when they grow up.
Step 3 Picture description (group work)
Ask students open the book and turn to page 21.and look at the picture to discuss each picture in groups of 4,imagine the situations and try to describe them as fully as possible with their own words .finally invite some students to report back their descriptions students five minutes to prepare for it. Teachers will give to help the students get the main content of each picture,teachers can ask some questions.

Step 4 Brainstorming questions
1. What characters should a good parents have
2. What characters should a good child have
From the answers ,we may get that understanding is the best bridge between parents and children.
Step 5 Summary
In this class,we have talked about growing pains and have a disscussion about the pictures of the problem happening to children and their parents.From the class we know our parents’ love is true and selfless .So we should do an best to bring parents and children together and help children out of growing pains .In my opinion,understanding is the best bridge between parents and their children. Now I give you homework—write a letter to your parents to express your love to your parents .Maybe you can begin like this : “Dear Mom and Dad,I want to say ……”
