第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项中,选出一个最佳选项。
A
The purpose of the information superhighway is to provide remote electronic banking, schooling, shopping, taxpaying, chatting, game playing, video conferencing, movie ordering and medical diagnosing.
Here’s what it won’t do: It won’t remove the need to shop at stores, drive a car, visit friends, or do most of the things you normally do now.
It might make many things you do easier and more convenient. Movies you now can get only at video stores will be available on your TV 24 hours a day.
The information superhighway will carry all kinds of personal matters from your tastes in movies to your buying habits. How this information will be protected is one of the great unknowns.
Computer hackers represent another threat. Last February, high tech marauders were able to steal thousands of passwords from Internet; this would allow them to read hundreds of personal files, including E-mail. Such a breakin could result in anything from a small inconvenience to a loss of privacy.
On the other hand, computerized systems give financial institutions and police stations much better tools for picking out patterns of criminal behavior.
56. Which is not true from the passage?
A. It won’t remove the need to shop at stores.
B. It might make many things you do easier and more convenient.
C. Financial institutions can deal with criminal behavior.
D. It is hard to protest the privacy of superhighway users.
57. According to the passage, the information superhighway can be used for except_____.
A. conversation
B. education
C. going out buying things
D. medical service
58. The computer systems give_____ much better tools for picking out patterns of criminal behavior.
A. financial in situations
B. police stations
C. medical service
D. both A and B
59. The passage mainly talks about_____.
A. the development of the information superhighway
B. how the private information will be protected
C. what the information superhighway can do
D. the advantages and disadvantages of the information superhighway

In one way of thinking, failure is part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The “spider-story” is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider spinning a web. The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times and six times he failed. On the seventh time he made it and went on to defeat the English… Edison, the inventor of light bulb made hundreds of models before he found the light way to make one. Once he was asked why he kept on trying to make new types of battery, when he had failed so often. He replied, “Failure? I have no failure. Now I know 50000 ways that it won’t work.”
So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were conditions right? Were you in top for yourself? What can you change so things will go right next time?
Second, is the goal you’re to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Thinking about this question, “If you do succeed in this, where will it get me?” this may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn’t be
doing anyway.
The third things to bear in mind about failure is that it’s part of life. Learn to “live with yourself” even though you may have failed. Remember, “You can’t win them all.”
60. This passage deals with _________.
A. ways to success B. ways to failure and success
C. the “Spider-story” D. the invention of the light bulb
61. In the first paragraph, the author talks mainly about _________.
A. the value of failure B. success achieved
C. the greatest failure D. Robert Bruce and Edison
62. “The Spider-story” shows that _________.
A. failure must come before success B. failure is not always a bad thing
C. nature will help us if we let it be D. people who have failed are sure succeed
63. Even if we have failed, we should ________.
A. think about it no more B. learn to enjoy ourselves
C. learn to live with others in the same house D. learn to accept it

America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect American society in many ways--education, medicine, and business. Quietly, the graying (老龄化) of America has made us a very different society--one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior (行为) is suitable at various ages.
A person's age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage or health. There's no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn’t as strong as it used to be. It doesn't surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public ideas are changing.
Many people say, "I am much younger than my mother-or my father was at my age." No one says "Act your age" any more. We've stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.
64. It can be learned from the text that the aging of the population in America_________.
A. has made people feel younger B. has changed people's social position
C. has changed people's understanding of age D. has slowed down the country's social development
65. The underlined word "one" refers to _________.
A. a society B. America C. a place D. population
66. "Act your age" means people should ________.
A. be active when they are old B. do the right thing at the right age
C. show respect to their parents young or old D. take more physical exercises suitable to their age
67. If a 25-year-old man becomes general manager of a big firm, the writer of the text would most probably consider it ________.
A. normal B. wonderful C. unbelievable D. unreasonable
D

E
Recently, in the hope of earning both money and social experience, I became a door-to-door salesman.
I once read a saying: “If somebody wants something of yours, you will be treated as warmly as spring, but if they don't, you may be treated as coldly as winter.” You may consider this an exaggeration (夸张), but if you are a salesman, it is clearly correct.
You would never have found it to be so true if you hadn’t been a salesman. You needn’t stand doubtful looks and unfriendly comments; you needn’t listen to something completely wrong and nod to say that it was quite right; you needn’t worry about being refused time after time; you needn’t always keep patience and a smile; you needn’t repeat the same sentences over and over again; you needn’t talk to somebody you dislike…
I did this work for a month, then I decided to give it up. Apart from the reasons above, I found I was paying too much attention to the job and thus sacrificing my study time. The latest test result proved that my grades were getting worse.
Even worse, I hadn’t enough time to join my classmates in college activities. Sometimes I felt lonely and unhappy because of both my study and my part-time job. Now I don’t think it is worth doing such a thing for even though I was earning money it came at great cost.
Newspapers and magazines often publish stories about excellent students who do part-time work while also keeping high scores in class. But according to my experience, part-time work can have some strong negative influences (负面影响) on study.
Most students don’t view the relationship between study and work correctly. In my opinion, if it isn’t a must for financial (财政的) reasons, students should be cautious (careful) about taking up a part-time job.
72. From the text, we can tell that the writer is ____________.
A. an unemployed man B. a middle-school student
C. a college student D. a door-to-door salesman
73. Which of the following words has the closest meaning to the underlined word “sacrificing”?
A. losing B. wasting C. using D. getting
74. In the writer’s opinion, ____________.
A. to do a part-time job was unnecessary
B. part-time jobs had good effect upon study
C. it was hard to deal with the relationship between study and work correctly
D. part-time jobs would be good for every college student
75. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Part-time Jobs Are Useful B. Part-time Jobs Can Cost Dear
C. Students shouldn’t Take Part-time Jobs D. Part-time Jobs Are Important to Many Students

Dear editor,
I’m writing to tell you about a discussion we have had about whether students of Senior Three should take physical exercise or not. There are two different opinions about it.
55% of the students think they should take physical exercise everyday, such as doing morning exercises, playing ping-pong and basketball, but should not take too much time. In their opinion, exercise builds one’s body and reduce the chance of falling ill. What’s more, sports let their brains relax so that they can improve the efficiency of revision.
On the other hand, 45% of them believe it is a waste of time to take exercise. Also, it’s very tiring. After having sports, they think, they are too excited for a long time to fix their attention on their lessons. Sometimes it is likely to get hurt in sports.
Best wishes.
Yours
