Learning Chinese has been like climbing a steep (陡峭的) mountain.
My mother was born in Tokyo, while my father moved from Shanghai to Hong Kong when he was seven years old. At home we speak English. I know some basic Chinese customs: to use chopsticks gracefully (得体地) and what to say on Spring Festival to earn a red envelope. But I never truly learned to speak Chinese.
Why would I need to learn the language, anyway? I live in America where everyone speaks English.
I realized my ignorance (无知) in ninth grade when I arrived at Phillips Academy, a prestigious (有声望的) boarding school in Massachusetts. The school encouraged a global outlook. There I decided to embrace (拥抱) the opportunity to learn Chinese.
It never bothered me that the Americans in my class secretly thought I was taking a slacker course (偷懒的课). I met other American-born Chinese and together we spoke Chinglish outside of the classroom.
I searched for ways to access Chinese culture through dramas such as Meteor Garden (《流星花园》) and music by singers such as S.H.E, Wilbur Pan, and Jasmine Leung (梁静茹). Listenting to Chinese music is where I found my favorite singer in the entire universe: Jay Chou. Even if I can never understand what he’s crooning (哼唱), I definitely feel more Chinese whenever I listen to his music.
Last summer I spent five weeks in China, four of which were taking an intensive (加强的) language course at a Beijing high school. I was proud when I could understand the dialogue in Initial D (《头文字D》) and when I could easily translate Fairy Tale sung by Kong Leung (光良).
Learning Chinese has been a rocky trek (艰苦跋涉), and I know it will continue to be that way before I arrive at a relative plateau (高地) of fluency. I hope that one day I will be able to work and maybe even live in China as a true Chinese.

When Rikke Dausen in Denmark goes to get some milk from the fridge, she has trouble getting past the refrigerator door. But it’s not because of any physical obstruction(障碍).It’s usually because the PC monitor in her refrigerator’s door has informed her that a new e-mail message has arrived.Rikke and her husband are taking part in a six-month test sponsored(赞助) by a Danish firm and two Swedish partners. They hope to show that computers can be put to much more practical daily use than most people think.Fifty families and singles were provided with a free model known as the “Screenfridge” for the period of the test.?

When that time comes, people will be taking holidays in space and visiting other planets. Great progress will have been made in medicine, too. Perhaps a cure will have been discovered for the most terrible of all diseases—cancer.Pollution is a problem we must solve. In hundred’s years’ time it will have been controlled.
All the world will have been developed — even Antarctica. There will be large cities in Antarctica. We already have supersonic(超音速的) flight, but in a hundred years’ time we will have supersonic land travel as well.

Shanghai has raised its charges for drainage(排水) fees this month in a move to encourage local residents to save water and recycle precious water. The effort is designed to reduce pressure from the city's seriously shrinking water resources.
The city is capable of supplying a maximum of 10.64 million cubic metres of tap water daily, when daily consumption could be as much as 9.24 million cubic metres.
Ironically(具讽刺意味地),the city faces the East China Sea,and is surrounded by some 22 000 big and small rivers, and rain seems as common as sunshine.
Many locals have gotten used to keeping the tap running while brushing their teeth or washing the dishes, never considering the seemingly inexhaustible water supplies or pausing to think over the small increases in their water bills. They doubt whether Shanghai is short of water since the annual per capita amount of water available in the area is far more than the national average of 2220 cubic metres.?
The fact is that only 20 percent of the water from rivers is drinkable, which lowers the available amount to local residents to about 1000 cubic metres per capita—55 percent less than the nation's average and 10 percent of the global average.
Experts have estimated the city will face a daily fresh water shortage of 2.58 million cubic metres by 2020 at its present population growth rate. For years the city has ranked on the United Nations list of cities and municipalities(都市) that will experience severe drinking water problems this century.?

The greatest recent changes have been in the lives of women. During the twentieth century there was an unusual shortening of the time of a woman’s life spent in caring for children. A woman marrying at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children ,her work is lightened by household appliances(家用电器)and convenience foods.
This important change in women’s way of life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age, and though women tend to marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Many more return to full or part-time work. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with both husband and wife accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfaction of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money and running the home, according to the abilities and interest of each of them.
36. We are told that in an average family about 1990________.
A. many children died before they were five

D.four or five children died when they were five

A. would expect to work until she died
B.was usually expected to take up paid employment
C.would be healthy enough to take up paid employment

38. Many girls, the passage says, are now likely to ________.
A. marry so that they can get a job
B.leave school as soon as they can
C.give up their jobs for good after they are married
D.continue working until they are going to have a baby
39. According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to ________.

Trees are useful to man in three very important ways: they provide him with wood and other products, they give him shade, and they help to prevent drought and floods.
Unfortunately, in many parts of the world man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to draw quick profit from the trees, he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had.
Two thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire. It gained the empire but, without its trees, its soil became hard and poor. When the empire fell to pieces, the country found itself faced by floods and starvation.
Even though a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult for it to persuade the villager to see this. The villager wants wood to cook his food with, and he can earn money by making charcoal(木炭) or selling wood to the townsman(城市居民). He is usually too lazy or too careless to plant and look after trees. So unless the government has a good system of control, or can educate the people, the forests will slowly disappear.
This does not only mean that the villager’s sons and grandsons have fewer trees. The results are even more serious. For where there are trees their roots break the soil up—allowing the rain to sink in and also hold the soil, thus preventing it being washed away easily, but where there are no trees, the soil becomes hard and poor. The rain falls on hard ground and flows away on the surface, causing floods and carrying away with it the rich topsoil, in which crops grow so well. When all the topsoil is gone, nothing remains but a worthless desert.

A. necessary but impossible
B. necessary but difficult
C. impossible and unimportant

A. where there are no trees, the soil becomes poor but soft
B. where there are many trees, there are more floods
C. where there are no trees, the land might become desert slowly
D. floods will make the land become desert

Tokyo is one of those places that you can love and hate at the same time. In Tokyo there are always too many people in the places where you want to be. Of course there are too many cars. The Japanese drive very fast when they can, but in Tokyo they often spend a long time in traffic jams(交通阻塞). Tokyo is not different from London, Paris and New York in that. It is different when one wants to walk.
At certain times of the day there are a lot of people on foot in London's Oxford Street. But the street near the Ginza in Tokyo always has a lot of people on foot, and sometimes it is really difficult to walk. People are very polite; there are just too many of them.
The worst time to be in the street is at 11:30 at night. That is when the nightclubs are closing and everybody wants to go home. There are 35,000 nightclubs in Tokyo, and you do not often see one that is empty.
During the day, most people travel to and from work by train. Tokyo people buy six million train tickets every day.At most stations, train arrives every two or three minutes, but at certain hours there do not seem to be enough trains.Although they are usually crowded,Japanese trains are very good. They always leave and arrive on time. On a London train, you would see everybody reading a newspaper. In Tokyo trains, everybody in a seat seems to be asleep, whether his journey is long or short.

Geena David knew she wanted to be a movie star when she was very young. She was not sure what gave her the idea, but she wanted to look like a movie star. “I have a lot of pictures from my childhood of me wearing sunglasses,” she says. “I used to wear them to watch TV.”
Early movie actors started wearing sunglasses not because they looked good, but because their eyes hurt. The lights used on movie sets were extremely bright and could cause a painful problem known as “Klieg eyes”. It was named after the Klieg brothers who invented the lights. Actors wore sunglasses to give their eyes a rest. But when movie stars began wearing their sunglasses in public, they quickly became a must.
Eventually actors started wearing sunglasses in their movies as well as on the street. Audrey Hephburn wore ultra-cool Ray-Ban sunglasses in the 1961 movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. As a result, Ray-Ban sunglasses started to appear more and more in the movies. In 1979, Ray-Ban “Wayfarers” were worn by Jake and Elwood in The Blue Brothers. Tom Cruise wore Ray-Ban “Aviator” sunglasses in the 1986 hit, Top Gun. Then in 1997, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones made Ray-Ban “Predator” sunglasses famous in Men in Black.
Of course sunglasses aren’t just a fashion statement. The main reason to wear sunglasses is to protect our eyes against UV radiation. UV radiation can damage our eyes, so people now choose their sunglasses carefully. But you don’t have to give up style for safety. The choice of frames and lenses available these days is huge. So you can protect your eyes and still be the coolest person on the beach.

I strongly believe that it is rather important to be a good listener. And although I have become a better listener than I was ten years ago,I have to admit I'm still only an adequate (尚可的) listener.
Effective listening is more than simply avoiding the bad habit of interrupting others while they are speaking or finishing their sentences. It's being content to listen to the entire thought of someone rather than waiting impatiently for your chance to respond(回答).In some ways, the way we fail to listen is symbolic(象征性的) of the way we live.We often treat communication as if it were a race. It's almost like our goal is to have no gaps between the conclusion of the sentence of the person we are speaking with and the beginning of our own. My wife and I were recently at a cafe having lunch, overhearing the conversations around us. It seemed that no one was really listening to one another;instead they were taking turns not listening to one another.I asked my wife if I still did the same thing. With a smile on her face she said,“Only sometimes”.Slowing down your responses and becoming a better listener aids you in becoming a more peaceful person. It takes pressure from you.If you think about it,you'll notice that it takes an extremely large amount of energy and is very stressful to be sitting at the edge of your seat trying to guess what the person in front of you (or on the telephone) is going to say so that you can fire back your response. But as you wait for the person you are communicating with to finish,as you simply listen more carefully to what is being said, you'll notice that the pressure you feel is off.You will immediately feel more relaxed, and so will the people you are talking to.They will feel safe in slowing down their own responses because they won't feel in competition with you for “air time”! Not only will becoming a better listener make you a more patient person,it will also add to the quality of your relationships.Everyone loves to talk to someone who truly listens to what they are saying.
37.According to the passage,an effective listener should ____________.

A.the author was not an effective listener in the past
B.a person who only wants to respond is not welcome
C.the author's wife must always be an effective listener

A poor traveler stopped under the tree to eat the boiled rice and vegetable which he had brought with him.A few meters away, there was a small shop by the side of the road where a woman was frying fish and selling it to travelers. The woman watched the poor traveler carefully, and when he finished his food and began to go,she shouted rudely,“You haven’t paid me for the fried fish!”
“But I have not had any fried fish!” he said.
“But everyone can see that you enjoyed the smell of my fried fish with your rice and vegetables,” said the woman.“If you had not smelled the fish, your meal would not have been so pleasant!”
Soon a crowd collected, and although they supported the poor traveler, they had to admit that wind was blowing from the shop to the place where he had eaten, and that it had carried the smell of the fried fish to him.

“Twenty-five cents a plate,” she answered,delighted.

Another type of publication which helps keep the population informed is the magazine. Some magazines are published weekly, others are put out monthly. There are news magazines, literary magazines, and magazines for such special interests as photography, sports, art, and music,Some are primarily for men, others for women, and there is a selection of children's magazines, too. I’m afraid I have some very bad news for you. I have been very naughty and the school principal is very angry with me. She is going to write to you. You must come and take me away from here. She does not want me in the school any longer.
The trouble started last night when I was smoking a cigarette in bed. This is against the rules, of course. We are not supposed to smoke at all.
As I was smoking, I heard footsteps coming towards the room. I did not want a teacher to catch me smoking, so I threw the cigarette away. Unfortunately, the cigarette fell into the waste-paper basket, which caught fire. There was a curtain near the waste-paper basket which caught fire, too. Soon the whole room was burning. The principal phoned for the fire department. The school is a long way from the town and by the time the fire department arrived, the whole school was in flames. Many of the girls are in the hospital.
The principal says that the fire was all my fault and you must pay for the damage. She will send you a bill for about a million dollars.
I am very sorry about this.
Much love, Susan.
P.S. None of the above is true, but I have failed my exams. I just want you to know how bad things could have been!
