On 16th November 1971, a great decision was taken. The Stock Exchange Council (the body of men who are in charge of the Stock Exchange) decided that women should be allowed onto the new trading floor when it opened in 1973. But the "castle" had not been completely conquered. The first girls to work in "The House" were not brokers or jobbers. They were neither allowed to become partners in stockbreeding firms, nor to be authorized dealers in stocks and shares. They were simply junior clerks and telephone operators.
Women have been trying to get into the Stock Exchange for many years. Several votes have been taken in "The House" to see whether the members would be willing to allow women to become members, but the answer has always been "No". There have been three refusals of this kind since 1967. Now women are admitted, although in a very junior capacity. Two forms of jobbers made an application to the Stock Exchange Council to be allowed to employ girl clerks, Permission was finally given. A member of the Stock Exchange explained, after this news had been given, "The new floor is going to be different from the old one. All the jobbers will have their own stands, with space for a telephone and typewriters. Therefore, there will have to be typists and telephone operators. So women must be allowed in." This decision did not mean a very great victory in the war for equal rights for women. However, it was a step in the right direction. The Chairman of the new building will eventually lead to women being allowed to have full membership of the Stock Exchange. It is only a matter of time ; it must happen.

In the United States, 30 percent of the adult population has a "weight problem". To many people, the cause is obvious: they eat too much. But scientific evidence does little to support this idea. Going back to the America of the 1910s, we find that people were thinner than today, yet they ate more food. In those days people worked harder physically, walked more, used machines much less and didn't watch television.
Several modern studies, moreover, have shown that fatter people do not eat more on the average than thinner people. In fact, some investigations, such as the 1979 study of 3, 545London office workers, report that, on balance, fat people eat less than slimmer people.
Studies show that slim people are more active than fat people. A study by a research group at Stanford University School of Medicine found the following interesting facts:
The more the men ran, the more body fat they lost.
The more they ran, the greater amount of food they ate.
Thus, those who ran the most ate the most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat.
60. According to the article, given 500 adult Americans, ______ people will have a "weight problem".
A. 30 B. 50 C. 100 D. 150
61. Is there any scientific evidence to support that eating too much is the cause of a "weight problem"
A. Yes, there is plenty of evidence.
B. Of course, there is some evidence to show this is true.
C. There is hardly any scientific evidence to support this.
D. We don't know because the information is not given.
62. In comparison with the adult American population today, the Americans of the 1910s, ____.
A. ate more food and had more physical activities
B. ate less food but had more activities
C. ate less food and had less physical exercise
D. had more weight problems
63. Modern scientific researches have reported to us that _____.
A. fat people eat less food and are less active
B. fat people eat more food than slim people and are more active
C. fat people eat more food than slim people but are less active D. thin people run less, but have greater increase in food intake

A 57-year-old woman was hurt yesterday by “a huge black cat”, as she was walking her two dogs near Bodmin Moor in the West Country. Local police are looking into her story, which follows a lot of similar reports in the area in recent months. Residents(居民) and visitors to the West Country have been warned to keep away from the Bodmin area.
Mrs Williams, the wife of a local farmer, described the cat as “just like something out of the jungle. It was jet-black all over with a white-tipped tail. It had short legs but was very strong.” More details were not available, as the creature moved too fast and Mrs Williams only managed to take a short look at it. The incident happened when Mrs Williams was taking her dogs for a walk, as she always does on Sunday morning. Suddenly something struck her really hard on the back of the head, causing her to fall to the ground, stunned.
“When I came to, there was a huge black cat staring down at me with its glittering, green eyes. I got the fright of my life, I can tell you,” says Mrs Williams. “It was a frightening experience,” she told reporters, as she sipped a cup of tea to calm her down, still visibly shaken. “If it hadn’t been for my Labrador, it would have savaged me to death. It was about six feet long, the size of a large Alsatian(a kind of dog).” Mrs Williams’ description matches that of other eye witnesses(目击者) in incidents involving strange creatures in various parts of the country.
More police have been trying to track(追踪) the “Beast of Bodmin”, since it was first spotted some years ago, but they have so far come up with nothing except for a few very large animal tracks and a trail of dead sheep. Claims that the creature was sighted in a school playground recently are being investigated(调查). “Our policy is to look into all reports of this sort, however ridiculous,” said Chief Constable(警察局长) John Witmoor.
Investigations are still going on and local police have brought in zoologists to help them with the hunt for the “Beast of Bodmin”. Meanwhile, local people and visitors to the area have been warned not to walk alone on the moor. Parents have been advised to keep their children at a safe distance from the area. Motorists have also been asked to keep an eye out for anything unusual and to report sightings to the police immediately.
64. According to the text, we know that Labrador refers to ________.

C. Mrs Williams’ friend D. a policeman
65. In order to find the creature, the police _______.
A. have warned parents to keep the children safe
B. have asked experts for help
C. are looking for more eye witnesses

66. From the text we know that the creature was first seen ________.
A. sometime last year B. a few days ago

In October, 1961, at Crowley Field in Cincinnati, Ohio, an old, deaf gentleman named William E. Hoy stood up to throw the first ball of the World Series. Most people at Crowley Field on that day probably did not remember Hoy because he had retired from professional baseball 58 years earlier, in 1903. However, he had been an outstanding player and the deaf people still talk about him and his years in baseball.
William E. Hoy was born in Houckstown, Ohio, on May23, 1869. He became deaf when he was two years old. He attended the Columbus Ohio School for the deaf. After graduation, he started playing baseball while working as a shoemaker. Hoy began playing professional baseball in 1886 for Oshkosh (Wisconsin) of the Northwestern League. In 1888, he started as an outfielder with the old Washington Senators. His small figure and speed made him an outstanding base runner. He was very good at stealing bases during his career. In the1888 major League season, he stole 82 bases. He was also the Senators' leading hitter in1888. Hoy was clever, he threw right-handed and batted(击球) left-handed. On June 19,1889, he threw out three batters at the plate from his outfield position.
The arm signals used by judges today to throw balls and strikers began because of Hoy. The judge lifted his right arm to show that the pitch was a strike, and his left arm to signal that it was a ball.
For many years, people talked about Hoy's last ball game in 1903. He was playing for Los Angeles of the Pacific Coast Winter League. It was a memorable game because Hoy made a wonderful play which won the game. It was a very foggy night and, therefore, very hard to see the ball. In the ninth inning, with two men out, Hoy managed to catch a fly ball to make the third out in spite of the fog. Los Angeles defeated their opposition and won the game. After he retired, Hoy stayed busy. He ran a dairy farm(牛奶厂) near Cincinnati for 20 years. He also became a public speaker and traveled giving speeches. Until a few years before his death, he took 4 and 10 miles walks several mornings a week. On December 15, 1961, William Hoy died at the age of 99.

We have far less white cells in our blood than red ones. However, when we are ill, the number of white cells increases dramatically. Doctors used to think this was a bad sign but we now know differently.
Suppose you cut your finger and allowed dirt and microbes (细菌)to infect(感染) it. We find that white cells make their way to your finger in vast numbers. They gather round the wound and attack the microbes. In the following battle, many white cells are killed and the creamy pus (脓) consists mainly of these dead soldiers.
The white ceils are our defensive army against living enemies or elements from outside. Our body is indeed a wonderful machine. No sooner does the slightest injury occur than the spleen(脾)and other glands(腺) in the neck and armpits are all made aware and are called upon to manufacture millions of white cells in a hurry.
White cells do not like alcohol. So if you had a poisoned hand it would not be wise to think that a drink of alcohol would help. Some drugs also affect the white cells. Other drugs --the anti-biotins(抗生素) simply attack microbes and make the job easier for the white cells to finish them off.
It is the red cells that provide the color of blood. They are produced inside our bones. These cells do not move freely on their own like the white but they do perform an important job. Their coloring matter called "hemoglobin" (血红蛋白)which has the job of carrying oxygen to all our cells--without which they would die, Every four minutes every red cell passes through the lungs and the hemoglobin picks up oxygen that we have breathed in. Blood--containing oxygen is a bright red color. Blood that returns to the heart to be pumped through the lungs is bluish because the oxygen has been passed to the cells.
To be well and strong we must have a supply of both red and white cells. But the red cells are easily poisoned. If we breathe in too much pollution from car exhausts or cigarette smoke we are threatening the red cells. Poisons mix with hemoglobin in the blood and insufficient oxygen is picked up from the lungs.
72. If your white cells increase in number you ______.
A. must become very worried.
B. know that you may not be cured.
C. should know they are helping you to get better.
D. know that your red cells are in danger
73. Which statement is correct

C. returning oxygen to the lungs
D. taking oxygen to the brain
75. A person who smokes is _____.
