Period One Warming up & Reading
Teaching objectives
Language objectives
1. to help students to know something about Olympics and Guinness records
2. to get students to understand the whole text about the guy named Ashrita Furman
3. to instruct students to express opinions
4. to help the students to master some useful phrases and expressions
Skill objectives:
1. to develop students’ reading skills: predicting, skimming and scanning
2. to improve students’ speaking ability by fulfilling tasks and working in groups
3. to enhance students’ competence in collecting specific information
4. to improve their ability to express their own opinions
Emotional objectives:
1. to inspire strong will to overcome the difficulties in their life
Difficulties:
1. understanding of the whole text by answering questions
2. expressing opinions clearly
Teaching aids:
1. multimedia
2. blackboard
3. tape recorder
Teaching procedure
Step One Warming up
1. Get students to name some Olympic events freely or in the train form (class work)
2. Show them the pictures with names of some Olympic events
to lead in the topic Guinness records
(Alternative: Guinness Book of World Records is a book containing quite a few interesting world records. Here pictures of some records are shown to give students a brief introduction of the book and give students an opinion of Ashrita’s world records)
3. introduce the guy named Ashrita Furman with some common information
Step Two Pre-reading
1. Get the students to finish the part of pre-reading on page 1 with their partners (just exercise one)
2. Get them to read the text by asking a question: Do you want to know more about the guy and his interesting Guinness records
Step Three Reading
1. Read the text very quickly to tick out the topics about Ashrita that the author does not cover.
2. Ask students to read the whole text very carefully and try to answer the following questions with their partners
1) Where do you think Ashrita lives
2) How old do you think he is
3) Has he broken records in all seven continents
4) When did he first come across the Guinness Book of World Records
5) Which one of Sri Chinmoy’s beliefs led Ashrita to attempting records
6) Why was it amazing that Ashrita came third in the bicycle marathon in 1978
7) Why did Ashirita believe he could accomplish anything after the bicycle marathon
8) What happens in an event that prevents Ashrita from giving up
9) Do you think that the events that Ashrita participates in are childish Why or why not
10) What are some of the physical difficulties he has experienced when
walking with a bottle of milk on his head
standing on top of a Swiss ball
somersaulting
doing gymnastically correct lunges
Step Three Post-reading
Discussion:
Here are some of Ashrita’s beliefs. In groups, discuss whether you agree with them or not. But first of all, be sure to get students to understand those sentences.
