Every year, many foreign students go to America to study English. Some of them will live in an American family, but others will make a different decision. They’ll live with friends who come from their own country. I believe that if a foreign student thinks carefully about the two ways, he’ll decide to live with an American family. Even though there are one or two disadvantages(不利之处) to the first way, there are far more advantages.
In making his decision about how to live in the USA, the foreign student is careful to think about one or two disadvantages to live with an American family. First of all, he must know that he’s going to feel homesick(想家的) at first. Living in an American family may make this feeling become stronger. Also, the American family may do too much to take care of him. They may ask him where he’s going, when he leaves home, and when he’ll return.
If a foreign student lives in an American home, he’ll know the country and its people much better. For example, he’ll see how the parents teach their children. He’ll feel better because the American family will help him get used to a new life. In an American family, he can learn English fast. Family members can help him with his homework. When he speaks English, they can help him correct(改正) the mistakes he has made. In this way, he can learn English more easily.
Although there are some disadvantages to live in an American family, there are more advantages.
( ) 26. Which of the following isn’t seen as an advantages in living with an American family

( ) 28. The two ways of living in the USA for foreign students in the text are_______.

B. living with an American family and living with American students in a house which
the student has to pay for
C. living with friends from their own country and living in a room in school
D. living with an American family and living with friends from their own country
( ) 29. By living with friends from his own country, a foreign student_____.
A. may soon get to know American people
B. can learn faster
C. may feel less homesick
D. doesn’t miss home any longer
( ) 30. The writer thinks that it’s good for a foreign student to live______.
A. in an American home

Every person uses his own special words to show his ideas and feelings. Some of these expressions are commonly used for many years. Others are popular for just a short time. One such American expression is “Where’s the beef ”. It is used when something is not as good as it is said to be. In the early 1980s,“Where’s the beef ” was one of the most popular expressions in the United States. It seemed as if everyone was using it at that time.
Beef, of course, is the meat from a cow, and no food is more popular in America than a hamburger made from beef. In the 1960s, a businessman named Ray Kroch began building small restaurants that sold hamburgers at a low price. Kroch called his restaurant “McDonald’s”. Ray Kroch became one of the richest businessmen in America.
Other business people watched his success. Some of them opened their own hamburger restaurants. One company called “Wendy’s” said its hamburgers were bigger than those sold by McDonald’s or anyone else. The Wendy’s company began to use the expression “Where’s the beef ” to make people know that Wendy’s hamburgers were the biggest. The Wendy’s television advertisement showed three old women eating hamburgers. The bread that covered the meat was very big, but inside there was only a bit of meat. One of the women said she would not eat a hamburger with such a little piece of beef. “Where’s the beef ” she shouted in a funny way. The advertisement for Wendy’s hamburger restaurants was a success. As we said, it seemed everyone began using the expression“Where’s the beef ”

Last week, I interviewed a lot of students at Hope Project High School about the best ways to learn English. Many said they learnt by using English. Some students had more specific suggestions. Liu Ying, for example, said the best way was by reading English magazines. She said that memorizing the words of English pop songs also helped a little, but she thought studying grammar was boring. Wang Hong feels different. He thinks studying grammar is a great way to learn a language. He also thinks watching English movies is a good way because he can watch the actor say the words. However, he thinks studying with a group is frustrating. Yang Lei said that joining the English club at school was the best way to improve English. She also added that students got a lot of practice by reading aloud. However, she said having conversations with friends wasn’t helpful at all.

Many animals use some kinds of “language”. They use signals with meanings. For example, when a bee has found some food, it goes 16 its home. It’s 17 for a bee to tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to 18 , but it can do a little dancing. This tells the bees where the food is and 19 it is.
Some animals show how they feel by making sounds. It’s not difficult to tell if a dog is angry
20 it barks(吠). Birds make several different sounds and 21 has its own meaning. Sometimes we humans make sounds 22 . We make sounds like “Oh!” or “Ouch!” to show how we feel about something or when we 23 something on our feet.
We humans also have languages. We have words. These words have the meanings of things, actions, feelings or ideas. We’re able to give each other 24 to tell what we think or how we feel. By writing down words, we 25 remember what has happened or 26 messages to people far away.
Languages can live and die. If a language isn’t used by people, it’s called a dead language. This language cannot live or grow because 27 speaks it. Latin(拉丁语) is an example of a dead language.
A living language, of course, is often spoken by people today. It grows and 28 with time.

Although we may not realize it, when we talk with others we make ourselves understood not just by words. We send messages to the people around us also by body movements. A smile and handshake(握手) show welcome. Waving one’s hand is to say “Goodbye. ” Nodding(点头) the head means agreement, while shaking it means disagreement. In China and some English-speaking countries, these body movements have the same meanings.
But not all body languages mean the same things in different countries. For example, nodding the head in some Asian countries means not “Yes.”, but “No. ”
When we speak a foreign language, it’s important to know the meanings of the body movements in the foreign countries. In Russia, France and some of South American countries men kiss(吻) each other when they meet. Men don’t kiss each other in China or English-speaking countries. In England, older people usually shake hands when they meet someone for the first time, however, young people don’t shake hands. In France, people shake hands in the office every morning. French people kiss each other more often than English people when they meet or leave.

Some people have very good memories, and can easily learn quite long poems by heart, while there are people who can only remember things when they have said them over and over.
Charles Dickens, the famous English author, said that he could walk down any long street in London and then tell you the name of every shop he had passed. Many great men in the world have had wonderful memories.
A good memory is great help in learning a language. Everybody learns his own language by remembering what he hears when he is a small child. Some children—like boys and girls who live in foreign countries with their parents—seem to learn two languages almost as easily as one. In schools it is not easy to learn a second language because the pupils have so little time to practice it, and they are busy with other subjects as well.
The human mind is rather like a camera, but it takes photographs not only of what we see but of what we feel, hear, smell and taste.
Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us.

Students often want to practice their English outside class. One of the best ways to practice your English is to speak to a foreigner. This week’s question comes from a student who is eager to start a conversation with the foreigners he sees every day. One student asks, “Is it Okay to try to talk to foreigners I see in the street ”
The answer is yes or no, but probably no! If you see a foreigner who looks lost, it is polite to ask him,“May I help you ” But, otherwise, you should probably let them get on with their business. Situations, however, do exist(存在) where it is quite all right to talk to foreigners. If a foreigner enters your school, office, shop or restaurant, for instance(例如), feel free to ask him (for example):
— What is your name
— Where do you come from
— What do you think of Beijing
— How long will you stay in Beijing
There are also situations where it’s Okay to talk to foreigners in public places. If you see a foreigner alone in a restaurant, bar or coffee shop, it may be appropriate(合适的) to ask him or her:
— Is this seat free
— Do you mind if I talk to you in English
You can probably help them if they are new to China and if they are alone. You may be able to make them feel more welcome.
After a few such questions, you should know whether this person wants to talk to you or not. If they ask you similar questions, or if they give long, informative answers, you’re in luck. If not, then give them their privacy(独处). Talking to strangers is fun if you choose the right time and place.

You may know that some English words come from French.
One interesting thing is that when we talk about meat at the table, we use French words. But when we talk about animals, English words are used. For example, a pig is called pig when it’s living, but it’s called pork when it is killed and its meat is brought to the table.
When the Normans(诺曼人) ruled(统治) England, the English farmers were made to raise animals for food, but they could not eat the meat. The meat was sent to the Normans’ tables. The farmers could only eat rabbit, because rabbits ran all over the fields and rabbit meat was cheap. So the meat of a rabbit was not changed into a French word. It was called rabbit by the English farmers at that time and is still called rabbit today.

Have you ever had problems in your life and don’t know how to be happy If so, you will find“Being a Happy Teenager”written by an Australian writer Andrew Matthews useful.
In his book, Matthews tells us how to have a happy life and answers the questions of teenagers.
There are many subjects, such as parents and friends, and the book says we should stop being angry and should forgive(宽恕). The book tells us some useful skills, such as how to put what you have learned into pictures of your mind to make your memory better. Many teenagers think that happiness comes from a good exam result or praise(赞扬) from other people. But you can still be happy when there are no such“good”things.
Success comes from a good attitude(态度). If you learn from problems, you will have success in the future. Some school students have problems, such as being too tall or too short. But Matthews tells us that happiness comes form thinking in a positive(积极的) way. If you are tall, people notice you and you can get a better view(视线) at the movie; if you are short, your clothes and shoes take less room in your bedroom! This is Matthews’ most important lesson: You choose to be happy!

English is a member of the Indo-European family of languages. This large family includes most of the European languages spoken today.
Old English (500—1066 AD) The language of the northeastern part of the Netherlands(荷兰) is called Old English. About half of the most commonly used words in modern English come from old English.
Middle English (1066—1500 AD) Because of Norman invasion(入侵) and conquest(征服) of Britain in 1066, many new words added to Middle English during this period came from Norman French, Parisian(巴黎的) French and Scandinavian(斯堪的纳维亚语).
Early Modern English (1500—1800 AD) During this period, English became more organized and began to be like the modern version of English.
Late Modern English (1800—Present) Pronunciation, grammar and spelling are largely the same, but Late Modern English has many more words.
American English Immigration(移居) to America changed the language. The American dialect(方言) and Spanish have a great influence on American English.

English is very important to us in the modern world. Many people want to learn it well. Here are some things that I want to say about learning English.
You need two things to learn English well—passion and good learning methods(方法), and passion is the more important one. Why Because passion makes you want to learn English; the learning methods only tell you how to do it better and faster.
If you love learning English, you’ll do it regularly and spend more time on it. Learning English will be easier for you. It’ll be easy for you to remember new words and grammar.
For example, some people like history and know everything about World War Ⅱ. If you told a “normal person” to memorize(记忆) all these facts, they would never do it. We know you may not love learning English. And even if you love it, you won’t do it sometimes. This is how human psychology(心理学) works—sometimes we’re very lazy and tired, so we don’t want to do anything though we like it very much.
When you don’t feel like learning English, you can do the following things:
First, imagine that you can talk to native speakers just like you talk in your native language. Imagine other people speak English as well as you do. Imagine the possibility of writing e-mail to people from all over the world.
Second, remember there’s a lot that you don’t know. You’re good, but your English probably isn’t good enough. Maybe you can’t understand English-language TV programs, read books in English, talk to English native speakers easily, or write letters without mistakes, etc.
Lastly, use English whenever you can. This is very, very important. The more you use English, the more you’ll want to learn it. Because English is so popular, you can use it everywhere. You can watch American cartoons, you can sing English songs, and you can read interesting books written in English.
( ) 31. The underlined word “passion” means “ ” in Chinese.
A. 态度 B. 热情 C. 步骤 D. 情感
( ) 32. The missing part in the third paragraph can be “ . ”
A. The brain can’t memorize everything
B. You’ll find it hard to learn English
C. That’s because the brain can easily remember information on a subject that you like
D. Everyone likes to learn what they like most
( ) 33. What can you do if you don’t feel like learning English
A. To put down books.
B. To read English story-books.
C. To imagine that you can write to many people in the world in English.
D. To give it up.
( ) 34. Which is NOT right according to the passage
A. Use English whenever you can.
B. The more you use English, the more you’ll want to learn it.
C. Methods are more important than passion.
D. Not everyone loves learning English all the time.
( ) 35. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. Learning English is the most important thing.
B. What you should do when you learn English.
C. Some methods of learning English.
D. Some advice for you when you don’t feel like learning English.

Once there were five beggars(乞丐). One was English, one Turkish, one Greek, one was an Arab and one was Persian. One day they met and decided to stay together, sharing what they had and helping each other in times of trouble.
Soon a man passed them in the street and gave them a coin. They talked about what to do with it. At last they decided to buy something to eat.
“Let’s buy some grapes!” said the Englishman. But the Turkish wanted “uzum”, the Arab “aneb”, the Greek “stafelea”, and the Persian insisted on(坚持) “angur”. They did not understand each other’s language very well. Soon they were quarrelling and even fighting.
While they were fighting about how to spend the money, a stranger came along. He knew all the five languages. He asked them why they were fighting. After they told him, he said, “Give me your coin. I will buy what you wish.”
He was soon back with a bunch of grapes. Each beggar was happy, as each had what he had wanted. Each had asked for the same thing, but the word for “grapes” is different in different languages.

Talking about English Learning
English is spoken by many people in the world. It’s becoming more and more useful in our life.
I have learned English for many years. In class, I try to listen to the teacher carefully and speak English more. After class, first I go over the lessons. Then I listen to tapes, watch English programs on TV, read English, join the English corner and so on. I study hard so I’m good at it now.
By the way, here are some suggestions for you. First, believe yourself, and try to read or speak English loudly. Second, learn English words and useful phrases or sentences by heart. Third, try to use English as much as possible.
