What do you want to be when you grow up A teacher A doctor How about an ice-cream taster
Yes, there really is a job where you can get paid to taste ice cream. Just ask John Harrison, an “Official Taste Tester” for the past 21 years. Testing helps manufacturers to be sure of a product’s equality. During his career Harrison has been responsible for approving large quantities of the sweet ice cream ---- as well as for developing over 75 flavors.
Some people think that it would be easy to do this job; after all, you just have to like ice cream, right No ---- there’s more to the job than that, says Harrison, who has a degree in chemistry. He points out that a dairy or food-science degree would be very useful to someone wanting a career in this “cool” field.
In a typical morning on the job, Harrison tastes and assesses 60 ice-cream samples. He lets the ice cream warm up to about 12 F. Harrison explains, “You get more flavor from warmer ice cream, which is why some kids like to stir it, creating ice-cream soup.”
While the ice cream warms up, Harrison looks over the samples and grades each one on its appearance. “Tasting begins with the eyes,” he explains. He checks to see if the ice cream is attractive and asks himself, “Does the product have the color expected from the flavor ” Net it’s time to taste!
Continuing to think up new ideas, try out new flavors, and test samples from so many kinds of ice cream each day keeps Harrison busy but happy---- working at one cool job.
What is John Harrison’s job
A. An official. B. An ice-cream taster.
C. A chemist. D. An ice-cream manufacturer.
2. According to John Harrison, to be qualified in the “cool field”, it is helpful to ____________.
A. keep a diary of work
B. have a degree in related subjects
C. have new ideas every day
D. find out new flavors each day
3. What does Harrison do first when testing ice cream
A. He stirs the ice cream.
B. He examines the colour of the ice cream.
C. He tastes the flavor of the ice cream.
D. He lets the ice cream warm up.
4. Which of the following is probably the best title of the passage
A. Tasting with Eyes B. Flavors of Ice Cream
C. John Harrison’s Life D. One Cool Job

The very wealthy English Baron Fitzgerald had only one child, a son, who understandably was the apple of his eye. His wife died when the child was in his early teens.
So Fitzgerald devoted himself to fathering the kid. Unfortunately the son died in his late teens.
Meanwhile, Fitzgerald's wealth greatly increased. He spent a lot on art works of the masters. Later Fitzgerald himself became seriously ill. Before his death, he had carefully prepared his will as to how his wealth would be settled-to sell his entire collection at an auction(拍卖). Because of the large quantity and high quality of his collection, a huge crowd of possible buyers gathered for the auction. Many of them were museum directors and private collectors eager to bid(出价). Before the auction, the art works were shown, among which was a
painting of Fitzgerald's son by an unknown artist. Because of its poor quality, it received little attention.
When it was time for the auction, the auctioneer gaveled(敲槌)the crowd to attention. First the lawyer read from Fitzgerald's will that the first art work to be auctioned was the painting of his son.
The poor-quality painting didn't receive any bidders, except one-the old servant who had served the son and loved him, and who for emotional reasons offered the only bid. As soon as the servant bought the painting for less than one English pound, the auctioneer stopped the bidding and asked the lawyer to read again from the will. The crowd became quiet, and the lawyer read from the will: “Whoever buys the painting of my son gets all my collection. ”Then the auction was over.

Dear all,
Please read Professor Hume's email about his next lecture on Rosa Parks.
Susan Miller
Secretary
**********************************
Dear Susan,
Please forward this message to students of my history class.
Besides the life story of Rosa Parks in the textbook, the students are also required to read the passage below and some related stories that can be borrowed from the school library.
Ted Hume
The early experiences of Rosa Parks(1913-2005), long known as the “mother of the civil rights movement, ”were not different from those of many African-Americans at that time. The black woman, however, turned the course of American history in December 1955 when she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. “By sitting down, ”remarked John Lewis, “she was standing up for all Americans. ”
Among the numerous awards Parks received in her life were the Presidential Medal of Freedom(1996)and the Congressional Gold Medal(1999).
Parks died on Oct. 24, 2005. At St. Paul A. M. E. Church in Montgomery, a large crowd including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice celebrated her life. Rice said she and others, who grew up when the political activities of Parks held public attention, might not have realized her impact(影响)on their lives, “but I can honestly say that without Mrs. Parks, I probably would not be standing here as Secretary of State. ”
After her casket(灵柩)was placed at the Capitol, U. S. President Bush, members of Congress and ordinary Americans paid their respects. In American history Parks is the first woman to lie in state at the Capitol, a very high regard usually reserved for Presidents of the United States.
4. What is the main purpose of Susan’s email
A. To make arrangements for Professor Hume's class.
B. To introduce to the students Rosa Parks.
C. To help the students organize a lecture.
D. To answer Professor Hume's last email.
5. What does the underlined word “forward” mean
A. Explain. B. Send. C. Take. D. Read.
6. The political impact of Rosa Parks lies in the fact that she .
A. helped Condoleezza Rice achieve political success
B. joined the civil rights movement at a young age
C. made racial equality a common value in American society
D. set a good example in her early life for other black Americans
7. How was Rosa Parks treated after her death
A. She was named “mother of the civil rights movement. ”
B. She was received by President Bush at the Capitol.
C. She was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
D. She was honored to lie in state at the Capitol.

Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends.
My earliest memories of my father are of a tall, handsome successful man devoted to his work and family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him, as a school girl and young adult I feared him and felt bitter about him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard.
On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch at an outdoor café. We walked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son’s funny facial expressions. Gone was my father’s critical air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around What had help him back before
The next day my dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I’m delighted with my new friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.
Why did the author feel bitter about her father as a young adult
He was silent most of the time.
He was too proud of himself
He didn’t love his children.
He expected too much of her.
When the author went out with her father on weekends, she would feel _____________.
A. nervous B. sorry C. tired D. safe
3. What does the author think of her father after her visit to Tucson
A. More critical B. More talkative.
C. Gentle and friendly. D. Strict and hard-working.
4. The underlined words “my new friend” in the last paragraph refer to ____________.
A. the author’s son B. the author ‘s father
C. the friend of the author’s father D. the café owner

More than 10years ago, it was difficult to buy a tasty pineapple. The fruits
that made it to the UK were green on the outside and, more often than not, hard
with an unpleasant taste within. Then in 1996, the Del Monte Gold pineapple
produced in Hawaii first hit our shelves.
The new type of pineapple looked more yellowy-gold than green. It was
slightly softer on the outside and had a lot of juice. But the most important thing
about this new type of pineapple was that it was twice as sweet as the
hit-and-miss pineapple we had known. In no time, the Del Mount Gold took the
market by storm, rapidly becoming the world’s best-selling pineapple variety,
and delivering natural levels of the sweetness in the mouth, up until then only
found in tinned pineapple.
In nutrition it was all good news too. This nice-tasting pineapple
contained four times more vitamin C than the old green variety. Nutritionists
said that it was not only full of vitamins, but also good against some diseases.
People were understandably eager to be able to buy this wonderful fruit. The
new type of pineapple was selling fast, and the Del Mounte Gold pineapple
rapidly became a fixture in the shopping basket of healthy eater.
Seeing the growing market for its winning pineapple. Dol Mount tried to
keep the market to itself. But other fruit companies developed similar
pineapples. Del Mount turned to law for help, but failed. Those companies
argued successfully that Del Mount’s attempts to keep the golden pineapple for
itself were just a way to knock them out of the market.
5. We learn from the text that the new type of pineapple is _________________.
A. green outside and sweet inside
B. good-looking outside and soft inside
C. yellowy-gold outside and hard inside
D. a little soft outside and sweet inside
6. Why was the new type of pineapple selling well
A. It was rich in nutrition and tasted nice.
B. It was less sweet and good for help.
C. It was developed by Del Monte.
D. It was used as medicine.
7. The underlined word “fixture” in paragraph 3 probably refers to something _____________.
A. that people enjoy eating
B. that is always present
C. that is difficult to get
D. that people use as a gift
8. We learn from the last paragraph that Del Monte ______________.
A. allowed other companies to develop pineapples
B. succeeded in keeping the pineapple for itself
C. tried hard to control the pineapple market
D. planned to help the other companies

Mail carriers will deliver some good news and some bad news this week.
The bad news: Stamp prices are expected to rice 2 cents in May to 41 cents, the Postal Regulatory Commission announced yesterday. The good news: With the introduction of a “forever stamp”, it may be the last time Americans have to use annoying 2-or-3-cents stamps to make up postage differences.
Beginning in May, people would be able to purchase the stamps in booklets of 20 at the regular rate of a first-class stamp. As the name implies, “forever stamps” will keep their first –class mailing value forever, even when the postage rate goes up.
The new “forever stamp” is the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) answer to the complains about frequent rate increases. The May increase will be the fifth in a decade. Postal rates have risen because of inflation, competition from online bill paying, and the rising costs of employee benefits, including healthcare, says Mark Saunders, a spokesman for USPS.
The USPS expects some financial gain from sales of the “forever stamp” and the savings from not printing as many 2-or-3-cent stamps. “It’s not your grandfather’s stamp,” says Mr. Saunders. “It could be your great-grandchildren’s stamp.”
Other countries, including Canada, England, and Finland use similar stamps.
Don Schilling, who has collected stamps for 50years, says he’s interested in the public’s reaction. “This is an entirely new class of stamps,” Mr Schilling says. He adds that he’ll buy the stamps because he will be able to use them for a long period of time, not because they could make him rich---- the volume printed will be too large for collectors. “We won’t be able to send our kids to college on these,” he says, laughing.
The USPS board of governors has yet to accept the Postal Regulatory Commission’s decision, but tends to follow its recommendations. No plans have been announced yet for the design of the stamps.
The main purpose of introducing a “forever stamp” is ______________________.
to reduce the cost of printing 2-or-3-cent stamps
to help save the consumers’ cost on first-class mailing
to respond to the complaints about rising postal rates
to compete with online bill paying
By saying “It could be your great-grandchildren’s stamp”, Mr Saunders means that forever stamps ________________________________.
could be collected by one’s great-grandchildren
might be very precious in great –grandchildren’s hands
might have been inherited from one’s great-grandfathers
could be used by one’s great-grandchildren even decades later
Which of the following is true according to the passage
The investment in forever stamps will bring adequate reward.
America will be the first country to issue forever stamps.
The design of the “forever stamp” remains to be revealed.
2-or-3-cent stamps will no longer be printed in the future.
What can be concluded from the passage
With forever stamps, there will be no need to worry about rate changes.
Postal workers will benefit most from the sales of forever stamps.
The inflation has become a threat to the sales of first-class stamps.
New interest will be aroused in collecting forever stamps.

Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenagers.
"I would never have said to my mom, 'Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it '" says Ballmer. "There was just a complete gap in taste."
Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to revolve in separate orbits.
Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families . Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent-child activities from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.
No wonder greeting cards today carry the message. "To my mother, my best friend."
But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents.
"There's still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening," says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College. "In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents."
Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic process that encourages everyone to have a say.
"My parents were on the 'after' side," explains Mr.Ballmer. "It's not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now."
1. The underlined word gulf in Para. 3 most probably means _______.
A. interest
B. distance
C. difference
D. separation
2. The change in today’s parent-child relationship is _______.
A. more confusion among parents
B. new equality between parents and children.

Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you’ve got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we’re the apple of our parents’ eyes, and that our Grandmas think we’re great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics, but sometimes it’s a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time you build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.
Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world.
The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don’t allow doubts to occur in it.
It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can’t move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you’re silly because you aren’t good at math, find a tutor. If you think you’re weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you’re dull because you don’t wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn’t mean it’s true.
The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat (拍) yourself on the back, you’ll know you’re well on your way. Good luck!

Edward Wilson is Amerca’s, if not the world’s, leading naturalist. In The Future of Life, he takes us on a tour of the world’s natural resources. How are they used What has been lost What remains and is it able to continue with the present speed of use Wilson also points out the need to understand fully the biodiversity of our earth.
Wilson begins with an open letter to the pioneer in environment protection, Henry David Thoreau. He compares today’s Walden Pond with that of Thoreau’s day. Wilson will use such comparisons for the rest of the book. The problem is clear: man has done great damage to his home over the years. Can the earth, with human help, be made to return to biodiversity levels that will be able to support us in the future
Biodiversity, Wilson argues, is the key to settling many problems the earth faces today. Even our agricultural crops can gain advantages from it. A more hundred species are the basis of our food supply, of which but twenty carry the load. Wilson suggests changing this situation by looking into ten thousand species that could be made use of, which will be a way to reduce the clearing of the natural homes of plants and animals to enlarge farming areas.
At the end of the book, Wilson discusses the importance of human values in considering the environment. If you are to continue to live on the earth, you may well read and act on the ideas.

The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to African ecosystem(生态系统). Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(大草原)surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat(栖息地).
It is the elephant's great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of
the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.
Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.
What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.
1. What is the passage mainly about
A. Disappearance of African elephants.
B. Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants.
C. The effect of African elephants' search for food.
D. The eating habit of African elephants.
2. What does the underlined phrase “setting the terms” most probably mean
A. Fixing the time. B. Worsening the state.
C. Improving the quality. D. Deciding the conditions.
3. What do we know about the open spaces in the passage
A. They result from the destruction of rain forests.
B. They provide food mainly for African elephants.
C. They are home to many endangered animals.
D. They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds.

Throughout the history of the arts, the nature of creativity has remained constant to artists. No matter what objects they select, artists are to bring forth new forces and forms that cause change-to find poetry where no one has ever seen or experienced it before.
Landscape(风景) is another unchanging element of art. It can be found from ancient times through the 17th-century Dutch painters to the 19th-century romanticists and impressionists. In the 1970s Alfred Leslie, one of the new American realists, continued this practice. Leslie sought out the same place where Thomas Cole, a romanticist, had produced paintings of the same scene a century and a half before. Unlike Cole who insists on a feeling of loneliness and the idea of finding peace in nature, Leslie paints what he actually sees. In his paintings, there is no particular change in emotion, and he includes ordinary things like the highway in the background. He also takes advantage of the latest developments of color photography(摄影术) to help both the eye and the memory when he improves his painting back in his workroom.
Besides, all art begs the age-old question: What is real Each generation of artists has shown their understanding of reality in one form or another. The impressionists saw reality in brief emotional effects, the realists in everyday subjects and in forest scenes, and the Cro-Magnon cave people in their naturalistic drawings of the animals in the ancient forests.
To sum up, understanding reality is a necessary struggle for artists of all periods. Over thousands of years the function of the arts has remained relatively constant. Past or present, Eastern or Western, the arts are a basic part of our immediate experience. Many and different are the faces of art, and together they express the basic need and hope of human beings.
4. Leslie's paintings are extraordinary because .
A. they are close in style to works in ancient times
B. they look like works by 19th-century painters
C. they draw attention to common things in life
D. they depend heavily on color photography
5. What is the author's opinion of artistic reality
A. It will not be found in future works of art.
B. It does not have a long-lasting standard.
C. It is expressed in a fixed artistic form.
D. It is lacking in modern works of art.
6. What does the author suggest about the arts in the last paragraph
A. They express people's curiosity about the past.
B. They make people interested in everyday experience.
C. They are considered important for variety in form.
D. They are regarded as a mirror of the human situation.
7. Which of the following is the main topic of the passage
A. History of the arts.
B. Basic questions of the arts.
C. New developments in the arts.
D. Use of modern technology in the arts.
