Richard Wagner was a German musician who lived in the mid-19th century. He gained fame by writing operas, a form of performance combining singing, music on instruments, and drama.
Wagner’s life and work have been very controversial(引起争议的). While he wrote excellent music, many people thought his operas were too dark and serious, lacking the fun in most operas written before his time.
Wagner, on the other hand, thought the opera of his time was too simple. He wanted to make opera a serious form of art that combined drama and music to tell deep stories that would have a strong effect on the audience.
Some people thought Wagner’s new kind of music was too different from the operas they were used to hearing. Wagner agreed with them. In fact, he didn’t call his works “operas” at all, but using a German word that means “Musical Festival” or “Musical Play”.
While many people today still do not like Wagner’s operas, they cannot deny that Wagner has had a lot of influence on opera as a form of art. Wagner invented the tradition of turning off the lights before starting a play. He also was the first person to make the whole audience sit down for an entire play. Today, almost all operas are performed in this manner.
Wagner as a man was even more controversial than Wagner as a writer of music. He hated Jewish people, slept with his friends’ wives, and made many people angry—lots of things we would today think of as evil. Some would say he was a good musician, while others hold that he was a bad musician. But it would be difficult to say he was not an important person in music and in the world.
59. Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?
A. Richard Wagner is not worth talking about. B. Richard Wagner was an evil man.
C. Richard Wagner wrote operas. D. Richard Wagner is a very controversial man.
60. Which of the following uses the word “deep” in the same sense as it is used at the end of paragraph three?
A. The ocean is very deep. B. He has a very deep, booming (洪亮的) voice.
C. It is not easy to tell the meaning of this poem, because the poet is very deep.
D. We went deep into the wood.
61. Which of the following is not a way in which Wagner’s works were different from normal operas before his time?
A. Wagner called his works “Musical Festival”.
B. Wagner used a combination of drama, music on instruments, and singing.
C. Wagner turned off the lights before starting a play.
D. Wagner made the whole audience sit down for an entire performance.
62. Which of the following does not support the point that the author makes in the last sentence?
A. Few musicians have been affected by Wagner’s works.
B. Most writers of opera today think opera as a serious form of music.
C. Today, all operas are performed with the lights off before starting and the audience seated.
D. Wagner’s music had a big influence on Adolf Hitler.

Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal. Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.
Different cultures emphasize(强调) the importance of relationship building to a greater or less degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries --- like the UK or France --- people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.
Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.
Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar value; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decision more quickly.
People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment(多元文化环境) will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.
63. In some countries, eating together at restaurants may make it easier for people to _____.
A. develop closer relations B. share the same culture
C. get to know each other D. keep each other company
64. The author mentions his experience in Thailand to show that _______.
A. people from Thailand are quite and shy by nature B. too many words are of no use
C. the English prefer to make long speeches D. even talk and silence can be culturally different
65. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Multicultural Environment B. Cross-Cultural Differences
C. How to Understand Each Other D. How to Build up a Relationship

Due to climate change, Arctic ice is breaking up earlier in the spring, and its area is decreasing. This is creating problems for polar bears that make their homes off northern Alaska and in Hudson Bay.
Polar bears off Alaska normally hunt and raise their young on ice sheets that float on the ocean. But as the ice has melted, the polar bears have been forced to spend more time on land. There, they have begun to frequent beaches, feeding on the remains of whales caught by native hunters. For polar bears, this food is less nutritious than seals that they normally catch on ice sheets. The shrinking(减少) ice has also forced more polar bears into the ocean. In the past, they only had to swim short distances between ice sheets. But as the ice has shrunk, polar bears have been forced to swim longer and longer distances in the open ocean. This poses a severe danger during rough weather, and an increasing number of drowned polar bears have been observed.
In Hudson Bay, the ice breaks up three weeks earlier in the spring now than it did 20 years ago. Polar bears on Hudson Bay fast(绝食) during the summer, waiting for ice to form in the fall to hunt. Every year, the summer gets longer, and the bears get skinnier. Over the past 25 years, the average weight of the female bears has dropped 68 kg. This loss affects their ability to reproduce, and already the number of births has dropped 15 percent. Unless the bears can learn to survive these climate changes, these giants of the ice may one day disappear.
71. What is Arctic ice doing earlier each year?
A. It’s freezing. B. It’s hardening. C. It’s melting. D. It’s expanding.
72. What is true of polar bears that are spending more time on land in Alaska?
A. Their young are dying. B. Their diet is changing.
C. Their health is improving. D. Their families are growing.
73. What do polar bears in Hudson Bay do during the summer?
A. They claim territory. B. They protect mates.
C. They hunt animals. D. They stop feeding.
74. What does the writer imply about female polar bears in Hudson Bay ?
A. They are having fewer young now. B. They suffer from various sicknesses.
C. They don’t need stronger protection. D. They can’t find enough good males.
75. In which publication would you most likely find this passage?
A. Medical News B. Society Today C. Wildlife Journal D. Design Magazine

Dear Steve,
I’m so pleased to know that you and your classmates are learning Chinese.
I’d like to recommend the following two dictionaries. The English-Chinese Chinese-English Dictionary is really a good one for beginners. It has 18,000 English words and 20,000 Chinese words. Besides plenty of examples, it has many notes telling you how to use a word. Xinhua Dictionary is the most popular Chinese dictionary, and it has a vocabulary of 10,000 words. It may also be useful to some advanced learners of Chinese. Of the two, ECCED is the more expensive, costing 52 yuan, and XD costs 11 yuan.
Please let me know if you want to buy these dictionaries.
