I was a single parent of four small children, working at a low-paid job. Money was always tight, but we had a roof(屋顶) over our heads, food on the table, clothes on our backs, and if not a lot, always 31 . Not knowing we were poor, my kids(孩子们) just thought I was 32 . I’ve always been glad about that.
It was Christmas time, and although there wasn’t money for a lot of gifts, we planned to celebrate with a family party. But the big 33 for the kids was the fun of Christmas 34.
They planned weeks ahead of time, asking 35 what they wanted for Christmas. Fortunately, I had saved $120 for 36 to share by all five of us.
The big day arrived. I gave each kid a twenty-dollar bill and 37 them to look for gifts of about four dollars each. Then everyone scattered(散开). We had two hours to shop; then we would 38 back at the “Santa’s Workshop”.
Driving home, everyone was in high Christmas spirits, 39 my younger daughter, Ginger, who was unusually 40 . She had only one small, flat bag with a few candies — fifty-cent candies! I was so angry, but I didn’t say anything until we got home. I called her into my bedroom and closed the door, 3416 to be angry again. This is what she told me.
“I was looking 42 thinking of what to buy, and I 43 to read the little cards on the ‘Giving Trees.’ One was for a little girl, four years old, and all she wanted for Christmas was a doll(玩具娃娃). So I took the card off the tree and 44 the doll for her. We have so much and she doesn’t have anything.”

The sea is very big. When you look at the map of the world you will find there is more water than land. The sea covers three quarters of the world. It looks very pretty when the sun is shining on it. It can be very rough when there is a big wind.
The sea is also very deep in some places. Some parts of the sea are very shallow. But in some places the depth of the sea is very great. There is one spot, near Japan, where the sea is nearly 11 kilometres deep! The highest mountain in the world is about 9 kilometres high. If that mountain were put into the sea at that place, there would be 2 kilometres of water above it!
The sea is salty. Rivers, which flow into the sea, carry salt from the land into the sea. Some parts of the sea are more salty than other parts. There is one sea, called the Dead Sea, which is very salty. It is so salty that swimmers can’t sink! Fish can’t live in the Dead Sea!
The sea can be very cold. Divers, who go deep down in the sea, know this. On the top the water may be warm. When the diver goes downwards, the sea becomes colder and colder. Another thing happens. When the diver goes deeper, the water above presses down on him. It squeezes him. Then the diver has to wear clothes made of metal. But he cannot go very deep. Some people who wanted to go very deep used a very strong diving ship! They went down to a depth of eleven kilometres.
46.Because of the sea, only____ of the world is left for people to live in.
A.75%??????? B.45%??????? C.30%??????? D.15%
47.The saltier the sea is, _____________.
A.the easier people can swim in it
B.the more the fish can live in
C.the more dangerous it will be
D.the more floating things there will be
48.Why can’t people go very deep into the sea?
A.Because of the coldness of the water
B.Because of the living things in the sea
C.Because of the pressure of the water
D.Because of the salt in the sea
B
I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles”(风格) of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”
Foreign tourists are often confused(困惑) in Japan because most streets there don’t have names; in Japan, people use landmarks(地标) in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”
People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.
It’s true that a person doesn’t know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A new Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan believe that “I don’t know” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!
49. When a tourist asks the Japanese the way to a certain place, they usually ______.
A describe the place carefully
B. show him a map of the place
C.tell him the names of the streets
D. refer to recognizable buildings and places
50. What is the place where people measure distance in time?
A. New York. B. Los Angeles. C. Kansas. D. Iowa.
51. People in Yucatan may give a tourist a wrong answer ______.
A. in order to save time B. in order to let you lost in Yucatan
C. so as to be polite D. for fun
52. What can we infer from the text?
A. It’s important for travelers to understand cultural differences.
B. It’s useful for travelers to know how to ask the way properly.
C. People have similar understandings of politeness.
D. New Yorkers are generally friendly to visitors.
C
When Ann, a grade two student at a well-known school, was pestered (纠缠) by her classmates to join their group to steal from shops, she was shocked. She was a quiet, well-behaved girl and she did not understand why the girls had approached her.
They showed her some of the things they had stolen and said that shop theft was great fun and very exciting. Then they threatened to beat Ann if she did not join them.
Ann was deeply troubled. She did her best to avoid the group of the girls after classes, but they often waited for her outside the school and tried to persuade her to come with them.
This problem is one which many school students in Hong Kong face. We asked the chairman of the local-fight-crime committee what Ann should do in these cases.
"First of all, she could try to talk the other girls out of the whole thing. Being caught stealing from shops could ruin their futures and it is simply not worth the risk," he said.
"Young people may think that it is easy to get away with stealing from shops, but more and more stores now have plain clothes detectives who are dressed like customers. I would say shop thieves have a more than ninety percent chance of being caught.
"If they won't listen to her, Ann should go to someone in charge in school, who can then decide if the matter can be dealt with by her or whether it is necessary to report the incident to the police."
53. From the first three paragraphs we can learn that ________.
A. Ann didn't know what to do with the case
B. Ann faced the group bravely
C. the group stole a lot of things
D. the group were short of money
54. The underlined part "talk the other girls out of the whole thing" in the fifth paragraph most probably means ________.
A. discuss the possible result with them B. tell them about their futures
C. persuade them to stop theft D. warn them not to disturb her
55. One of the suggestions to Ann is to ________.
A. report the situation to the police
B. ask the local-fight-crime committee for advice
C. hire a detective to catch them
D. turn to her teacher for help

Dear Editor,
I'm a senior high student. In my opinion, the classroom is a place for students to gain knowledge. Therefore quietness is badly needed for us to learn our lessons. But recently some students bring their mobile phones to the classroom and we often hear the ring of mobile phones. Some of them even waste precious time in class typing short messages on the mobile phone.
To keep the classroom quiet, those with mobile phones should not talk on the phone or send short messages. They should turn them off. We are supposed to concentrate on our studies.
Yours sincerely,Li Hua
