定语从句(Attributive Clauses)
Step 1: What is attributive
在句中做定语,修饰一个名词或代词,它的作用相当与一个形容词.被修饰的名词,词组或代词即先行词。定语从句通常出现在先行词之后,由关系词(关系代词或关系副词)引出。
(which, who, whom, that, whose)
the red
the green
the small Apple
the big
The apple which is red is mine.
The apple which is green is yours.
the handsome
the tall
the strong boy
the clever
the naughty
The boy who is handsome is Tom.
The boy who is tall is Tom.
Step 2:修饰, 限定
The kinds of attribute(定语):
1.He is an honest boy.
2.We love our country.
3.What’s your telephone number
4.Marx found it important to study the situation in Russia.
5.The foreigner who visited our school yesterday is from Canada.
Step 3: The positions of the attribute: (定语的位置)
1. This is a flower basket.
2. This is a basket full of flowers.
3. This is a basket that I want to put flowers in.(单个的词作定语时要放于被修饰词的前面,短语或从句作定语时要放于被修饰词的后面。)
Step 4: The Attributive clause 定语从句
Which引导的定语从句
which 指物 主语或宾语(可省略) 在介词后不可省略
1.The building which stands near the river is our school.
2.He has not found the pen which he lost last week.
3.The room in which there are a lot of books is a reading room.
Who 引导的定语从句
who 指人 主语, 宾语 (可省略) 介词在前不可使用
whom 指人 宾语(可省略) 介词后不可省略
a.The woman who lives next door is a teacher.
b. Do you know the student to whom Jane is talking (不能用who)
That 引导的定语从句
that 人或物 主语或宾语 不位于介词后
Here is the money that/which will be given to you.
Do you know the boy (that/whom) you met yesterday
关系代词whose的用法
whose经常后接名词,这结构可以用the+名词+of+whom/which来替换,意义不变。
e.g. Workers built shelters for survivors whose homes had been destroyed.
Workers built shelters for survivors the homes of whom had been destroyed.
关系代词引导定语从句时,要注意两点:
1.当关系代词作主语时不能省略;在口语中,作宾语时常常省略。
e.g. The man (whom) I saw yesterday came again this morning.
2. 当关系代词紧跟介词,做介词的宾语时,只可用whom或which, 此时的关系代词不能省略。
There is a room in which you can study.
(which) you study in.
