The Wimbledon Tennis Championships are famous around the world, with players from many different countries taking part.
The last time a British player won the tournament was in 1977 when Virginia Wade won the Women’s Singles title. However, in 2006, there were no such distinguished British women tennis players. It’s the men who have been the most successful.
There are three major British male players playing at international level at the moment. The most successful in the past was Tim Henman. He reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon four times, but he failed to make the next step to the finals. In 2002, he was seeded (确定为种子选手) fourth in the world.
In recent years Tim has slipped (滑落) to 62 in the world rankings. He is also 31 years old so he is no longer as young or fit as he used to be. But as long as he continues to play, the British people will always get behind him and hope that he can succeed at Wimbledon.
Greg Rusedski is another famous British men’s singles player. He was born in Canada but his mother is British, so he has chosen to be a British citizen and represent Britain in the tennis. He was also seeded fourth back in 1997, and has only ever reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. He is currently the highest ranking British player, but he has never really been a competitor (竞争者) for the Wimbledon title.
Britain’s biggest tennis hope is 19-year-old Andrew Murray from Scotland. He hasn’t been playing for very long, and he has had a few injuries which might have held him back, but he is currently ranked 45th, above Tim Henman. He has played well in tournaments in other countries over the past years and he is probably Britain’s biggest hope to succeed at Wimbledon sometime soon.
56. How many female British tennis players are mentioned in this article?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
57. The most promising British tennis player at present is _____.
A. Virginia Wade B. Tim Henman

finals at Wimbledon

59. Which of the following will be the best title for this passage?

When I say “work is rest” , some people will say I’m crazy. But that’s the way it is—we need to rest. Without rest, we will die. At a minimum, we won’t have the energy to work.
Nobody forces us to be so stupid about this. We just don’t know how to rest properly. We rest in ways that are not restful (宁静的), even stressful. Some of our ways of rest interfere (妨碍) with our working energy. Instead of sleep, we go to the movies and clubs, drink or have a smoke with friends. This is because we misunderstand the meaning of “rest.”
We should remember that rest means not working, both physically and mentally. Only then is it real rest. When tired, rest. It’s simple. Actually, dogs and cats are smarter about this than people. People are stupid enough to rest in ways that destroy their capacity (能力) to work.
Rest and work always go together. There must be a balance: work during the day and rest at night. When the sun comes up, one has plenty of strength to work well and enjoy it. In other words, rest is a kind of investment, so that one has the strength and energy to continue working. So we need rest to work, recognizing that we can’t have one without the other. Rest is what recharges our batteries. We need enough time to charge up adequately to the tasks we undertake. Thus, we need to rest correctly; otherwise, illness will occur and also can affect the efficiency of our work.
Rest can’t be skimped. Without enough rest, good work is impossible. This is why we say that rest is another kind of work.
60. Which of the following is the best rest according to this passage?
A. Going to the movies and clubs.
B. Drinking or having a smoke with friends.
C. Sleeping at home.
D. Playing cards with family members.

A. not supplied with enough of what is needed
B. strengthened in spite of the conditions
C. recharged during the time of working
D. invested without any of the cost
62. We can know from this passage that _____.
A. dogs and cats are smarter than we human beings
B. rest can make us work more efficiently
C. it’s not proper to sleep in the daytime for people.
D. rest is more important than work for people
63. Which of the following is the main idea of this passage?
A. Rest is another kind of work.
B. How to form the habit of sleeping.
C. Sufficient rest leads to success.
D. Why people need to rest.

Clara Barton was born on Christmas Day, 1821 in Oxford, Massachusetts. Although she was educated at home, Clara began teaching at school herself at the age of fifteen in various elementary schools in Massachusetts and New Jersey between the years 1836 and 1854. Before the Civil War, Clara’s most famous achievement was that she built a free public school in Bordentown, New Jersey. In addition, her only medical experience prior to the war was when she cared for her diseased brother David for two years.
When the Civil War broke out, Clara organized a relief program for the soldiers, starting her lifelong career as a nurse and humanitarian (人道主义者). After the First Battle of Bull Run at the start of the Civil War, Clara soon learned that many of the wounded soldiers had suffered from a lack of medical supplies. She then advertised for donations to buy supplies in Worcester, Massachusetts and began her own operation to distribute these supplies. Her operation was a success, and she was soon given a general pass by the U.S. Surgeon General, William Hammond, to travel with army ambulances for the next three years.
Upon the end of war in 1865, Clara set up an information center which served war-torn families, as well as aided in locating missing soldiers, and identifying and marking thousands of graves. Barton, knowing that the US would benefit greatly by having a Red Cross, returned home and established the Red Cross in America. In 1881, with her hard work the American Association of the Red Cross was founded. Upon her resignation, she retired to her home in Glen Echo, Maryland, where she died on April 12, 1912.

People have different marriage customs, which depend on their cultural background, religious beliefs and family traditions. Here is some information about some marriage customs in Germany.
Some days before the wedding, friends and relatives bring old porcelain (瓷器) and kitchenware (厨房用具) to throw on the ground in front of the bride and groom. The German proverb, “Scherben bringen Gluck” — which can be translated as “Broken crockery brings you good luck” — is from this custom.
On the wedding day, the bride enters the church in a long, usually white dress, carrying a flower bouquet. Accompanied by her father, she makes her way to the groom, who is waiting for her in his dark, elegant suit with a neck or bow tie. They make promises in front of the minister (牧师), and often it is the most moving moment of the couple’s life.
During dinner, everybody, if they like, can make a speech to praise the new husband and wife. After that, the bride and groom start the dancing with a waltz, and parents and witnesses join them. Occasionally, the dancing is interrupted by friends or relatives playing games to entertain all. It is very popular to ask the couple to take part in those games.
In Germany people stay and celebrate very late. As a result, it is very exhausting for the new couple. A lot of just-married couples head for their one-week or two-week honeymoon the next day and enjoy themselves on the beach, recollecting the memories of their wonderful wedding.

D. indicate that marriage is unstable and they should treasure it
70. During the wedding ceremony, ____.
A. the bride and groom must be in white and black
B. the groom should fetch the bride from her home

In many countries, life expectancy is getting longer, and many middle-aged children are taking care of their elderly parents. This can be very difficult because elderly parents often need somebody to be with them all the time. Children can feel that they are losing their privacy. If they decide to put their parents in a nursing home, they feel ashamed because they think it is their duty to care for them, as their parents took care of them when they were children.
In China, elderly parents usually stay with their children. Children become their caretakers. This is one solution, but this situation is hard because the children already have their own families and other responsibilities. Sons are supposed to take on the responsibility of caring for their parents, but usually it is the daughters-in-law who take care of them. Their sons’ contribution is mainly financial. For women, this can be a great stress because they might also need to take care of their children and husbands.
Another solution is to pay a nurse that can take care of aging parents. Children will share the cost of this service. Having a person that can take care of their parents makes life easier for them. In this situation, they only have to provide companionship for their parents for a few hours a week or whenever their parents ask them to go to someplace with them.
These two solutions are common, but nursing homes, at least in China, are unusual.
72. What problem do children often have when they take care of their aging parents?
A. There is a generation gap that affects the communication between them.
B. They may lose their free time and can’t devote much to their own families.
C. The children are ashamed of having to take care of their parents.
D. It is really hard and tiring to take care of their aging parents.
73. How many methods are mentioned to care for aging parents in this passage?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
74. Who takes the main responsibility for looking after aging parents in families in China?
A. Male children. B. Sons’ wives.
C. Hired nurses. D. Grandchildren.
75. In China, what is the common attitude towards putting elderly parents in a nursing home?
A. Indifferent. B. Supportive.
C. Disapproved. D. Puzzled.

书面表达 (One possible version)
Recently, weight-loss programs have become popular among young and middle-aged women. As being thin is in fashion, women use many different methods to lose weight. Some go on diets, some exercise, some take weight-loss pills, and some even turn to operation. All of these methods have their own consequences that go with them. At most markets and stores, women can buy different kinds of medicines and tea, all with different results, and some with side effects.
It is understandable that women want to look good, but it’s important that they do it in a healthy way. Of all the methods mentioned above, exercise is the best for your body and health. The other methods, if taken incorrectly, are more likely to cause health problems.

Text 10
As the car industry develops, traffic accidents increase greatly.Yet,their cause and control remain a serious problem that is difficult to solve.Experts have long recognized that this problem has many causes. At the very least,it is a problem with three reasons:the driver, the roadway and the driving. If all drivers exercised good judgment at all times, there would be few accidents. But that is rather like saying that if all people were honest, there would be no crime,Improved design has helped make roadways much safer. But the type of accidents continued to rise because of human failure and a great increase in the number of cars on the road.Attention is now turning increasingly to the third reason for accidents, the car itself. Since people think that accidents are certain to happen, they want to know how cars can be built better to protect the driver.
