I was walking along Park Road towards the east when an elderly man came out of the park on the other side of the street. Then I saw a yellow car drive up Third Street and make a right turn into Park Road. The next moment the car hit the man while he was crossing the road. He fell with a cry. He lived near a park, which was called People’s Park. It was about half past eight one Sunday morning. I was walking along Park Road when a man came out of the park on the other side of the street. Just then a city bus came up and stopped, but the man didn’t get on it. He wanted to walk across the road. At that time, a blue car was run-ning past quickly. The driver didn’t see the man. The car hit the man and knocked him down. It stopped and stayed for only a few seconds and then started to run away and soon disappeared. I walked up to the man to have a look. The man was seriously injured. He couldn’t even move. I tried my best to stop another car and took him to the nearest hospital. I didn’t notice the plate num-ber, nor did I see the driver clearly.Write down the story in only 5 sentences. The End Thank you.The EndA Teaching Plan
How do you write a composition?
(PRESENTATION) Hello, everyone. ‘WELCOME TO MY CLASS!’— (SLIDE 2) In this class hour we’re going to talk about ‘TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS’— (SLIDE 3). By the way, have you ever heard of traffic accidents before? Have you happened to see one with your own eyes? About two weeks ago there was a terrible accident near the North River Bridge. Two students from another school of our city riding a motor-bike were hit by a passing car. One of them died at once. And the other was badly hurt and is now still lying in hospital. So, I advise you to be more careful next time when you are walking or riding a bicycle in the street. Car accidents can be seen at any place at any time.(SLIDE 4) Last year I went to Binhai City to see my uncle. He lived near a park, which was called People’s Park. It was about half past eight one Sunday morning. I was walking along Park Road when a man came out of the park on the other side of the street. Just then a city bus came up and stopped, but the man didn’t get on it. (What was he going to do?)
(SLIDE 5) (The street was very busy. There were a lot of cars and buses running along the road.) He wanted to walk across the road. At that time, a blue car was running past quickly. The driver didn’t see the man. The car hit the man and knocked him down. It stopped and stayed for only a few seconds and then started to run away and soon disappeared.
(SLIDE 6) I walked up to the man to have a look. The man was seriously injured. He couldn’t even move. I tried my best to stop another car and took him to the nearest hospital. (SLIDE 7) I didn’t notice the plate number, nor did I see the driver clearly. Car accidents can also happen in foreign countries. Here is a similar one that happened in the USA. (SLIDE 8) Please look at these instructions and pictures. Suppose you are the boy, Li Hua, and you saw the accidents happen with your own eyes. Now you are asked by the police to write a short passage to report the accident. (SLIDE 9) How would you like to write it? What would you like to begin with? Yes, first of all, you should read and understand the instructions and the pictures carefully. But how can you understand them? –Right! Asking yourself several special questions is a very good way. You can ask five ‘WH-’ and one ‘H-’ questions.
(SLIDE 9-2) (What happens in the story? / Who appear in the story? / Where does the story happen? / When does the story happen? / Why does the story happen? / How does the story happen?) Now let’s have a try. (SLIDE 10) (书面表达 Step 1) The first step to write a composition is to “Read and understand the instructions and the pictures carefully by asking some ‘WH-’ questions. At the same time, you should write down the key points.”
Let’s look at Picture 1 (SLIDE 11) 1. What can you see in the picture? (A man, a boy—that is you, a park, a road—Park Road, and a clock.) 2. What was the time/date? (It was 7:15 on the morning of February 8,2000.) 3. What were you doing? (I was walking along Park Road towards the east.) 4. What did the man do?/Where was he? (He walked out of the park on the other side of the street.)
Now let’s come to Picture 2 (SLIDE 12) 1. What else can you see? (A car and 3rd Street.) 2. What was the car doing? (It was driving up 3rd Street and making a right turn into Park Road.) 3. How about the old man? (He was walking across the road.) Now Picture 3 (SLIDE 13) 1. What happened? (The car hit the man.) 2. How was the man? / Did he cry? (He fell with a cry.) 3. What did the driver look like? Was it a man? (The driver was a woman.) 4. What colour was the car? (Yellow.)
Picture 4, (SLIDE 14) the last picture. 1. Did the car stop? (No, it didn’t.) 2. What was it doing? (It was running away fast to the west.) 3. Did you see the plate number of the car? / What was it? (The number of the car was AC864.)
So far we have collected a lot of important information about the accident. What should we do then? (SLIDE 15) (Step 2) The second step is to make sentences with the key points according to the instructions and the pictures. (SLIDES 16-19) Now let’s go over the pictures once more one by one. Write down your sentences, discuss with your partner, and then I’ll ask some of you to read the sentences aloud. ( 2 minutes to get each picture ready.) (Show the sample sentences.) ** What did you do then? Did you help him? In what way? Now let’s use our heads to think of a reasonable end for the story.
(SLIDE 20) (Step 3) The third step is to join the sentences together to form a passage. You can use some proper conjunctions. Please look at your paper I’ve just given you. The second part. You can find many useful words and expressions there. These are for you to choose.
(SLIDE 21) Let’s come back to the four pictures. First of all, I’d like you to have a discussion. Tell your partner what happened in the story. ( 3 minutes later) Who would like to say something about the accident to the whole class? . (after 1 or 2 Ss ) Now write down your composition. I’ll give you eight minutes. (SLIDE 22) (Step 4) The last step is to go over the passage again and correct mistakes if there are any. Make sure you don’t miss out anything important. This time you can have a discussion with your partner or your teammates. Then I’d like some of you to read aloud your composition. Please get ready. (two minutes later) Now I’d like some volunteers to report the accidents. Who’d like to try first? If you are ready, put up your hand. (2 or 3 Ss will be asked to do the work.)
(SLIDES 23-26) (A Sample / A possible Version) Here is a sample. Please read it aloud carefully. I’m sure you can learn something useful from it.
(SLIDE 27) (Homework—Part 3 in your paper)
(SLIDE 28) (The end—Thank you!)
