The human nose is an underrated(被低估)tool. Humans are often thought to be insensitive smellers compared with animals, 36 this is largely because, 37 animals, we stand upright. This means that our noses are 38 to seeing those smells which float through the air, 39 the majority of smells which stick to surfaces. In fact, 40 , we are extremely sensitive to smells, 41 we do not generally realize it. Our noses are capable of 42 human smells even when these are 43 to far below one part in one million.
Strangely, some people find that they can smell one type of flower but not another, 44 others are sensitive to the smells of both flowers. This may be because some people do not have the genes necessary to cause 45 smell receptors(感受器) in the noses. These receptors are the cells which sense smells and send 46 to the brain. However, it has been found that even people insensitive to a certain smell 47 can suddenly become sensitive to it when 48 to it often enough.
The explanation for insensitivity to smell seems to be that the brain finds it 49 to keep all smell receptors working all the time but can 50 new receptors if necessary. This may 51 explain why we are not usually sensitive to our own smells— we simply do not need to be. We are not 52 of the usual smell of our own house, but we 53 new smells when we visit someone else’s. The brain finds it best to keep smell receptors 54 for unfamiliar and emergency signals 55 the smell of smoke, which might show the danger of fire.

To Richard Dorsay, a 36-year-old homeless Chicagoan, it was, at last, a place to call his own. But to everyone else, it was the Lake Shore Drive road bridge, so when Chicago city authorities discovered Dorsay living inside the bridge’s steel structure last month, they had no choice but to evict(逐出)him.
He had been 1iving in the bridge for three years, it turned out, furnishing it with a television, a microwave and a PlayStation, and borrowing power from the municipal(市政的)electricity supply. But that wasn’t the most extraordinary thing. The most extraordinary thing was that the Lake Shore Drive Bridge is a drawbridge.
"The first time.it was scary".Dorsay told a reporter from the Chicago Sun-Times, recalling how a bell would ring and his home would tip into the air, allowing tall—masted ships to pass along the Chicago River below, "After that, it was almost like riding a ferry‘s wheel."
Brian Steele, a spokesman for the Chicago Department of Transportation, puts it more frankly. “Essentially,” he says, “it changed his living space from horizontal(水平的) to vertical(垂直).”
Dorsay had a history of homelessness and emotional problems, but in the bridge, he thought, he had finally found a kind of stability. “You’ve got to be kind of agile( 敏捷的),” he admitted. “but it doesn’t take genius to figure out what to do”
Dorsay is now without a home, though he is currently staying with his parents. Gray, his father, said, “ I’ve always hoped that he would find a place and he would seek employment, He is strong enough and bright enough to do something.”

Feb.3,2006——According to CCTV international, Chinese scientists have recently taken the lead in building the first full superconducting experimental nuclear fusion(核聚变) device known as “artificial sun” in the world, which will produce energy like the sun.
It is reported that this device consists of five layers of components(成分) from inside to outside and the circulating magnet container in the innermost layer looks like a giant “swim ring”. In experimental tests, the temperature of inner “swim ring” will reach as high as 100 million degrees Celsius. Therefore, such component is a significant part to stimulate solar fusion reaction.
Wan Yuanxi, who is in charge of the project called Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak(EAST), an important scientific project under China’s ninth five-year plan, explained the reason why the sun always gives off light and why the energy it produces will not decrease. Under high pressure and high temperature, fusion reactions will take place from inside to outside of the sun. Such fusion reactions will give rise to a great deal of energy to enable the sun to continuously emit light and heat. However, fusion reactions on the sun are uncontrollable, just like H-bomb explosion seen on the earth. Huge amount of energy will be produced in a minute, which may be destructive. In order to make use of such energy, a transformation from the process of energy production to a stable, sustainable and controllable process is needed. EAST is serving to initiate such a transformation. Under magnetic force, the operation of hydrogen plasma isotope(同位素)will be restrained in the “swim ring” and high density collision will happen, namely the fusion reactions. The hydrogen isotope got from one liter of seawater can produce energy equal to 300 liters of gasoline through complete fusion reactions.
Wan said that we can get endless clean energy by producing such a device for accomplishing fusion reactions, which is equal to one or a few small suns made by human beings themselves so that they can ceaselessly obtain energy from nuclear fusions.
64. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Wan Yuanxi and His Invention B. Sun and the “Artificial Sun”
C. How to Produce the “Artificial Sun” D. China Built World’s First “Artificial Sun”
65. What does the underlined word “artificial”(in para.1)mean?
A. not real B. man-made C. actual D. ancient
66. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. The temperature of the innermost part of the “artificial sun” will reach as high as 100 000 000℃
B. EAST is an important scientific project under China’s ninth five-year plan.
C. Such fusion reactions in the “artificial sun” will give us limited energy.
D. The hydrogen isotope got from one liter of seawater can produce energy equal to 300 liters of gasoline through complete fusion reactions.
67. What’s the purpose of making the “artificial sun”?
A. To get more energy B. To get more light
C. To have the sun shining us in 24 hours D. To study inside of the real sun
D
Until recently, the “science of the future” was supposed to be electronics and artificial intelligence. Today it seems more and more likely that the next great breakthroughs in technology will be brought through a combination of those two sciences with organic chemistry and genetic engineering. This combination is the science of biotechnology.
Organic chemistry enables us to produce marvelous synthetic(合成的) materials. However, it is still difficult to manufacture anything that has the capacity of wool to conserve heat and also to absorb moisture. Nothing that we have been able to produce so far comes anywhere near the combination of strength, lightness and flexibility that we find in the bodies of ordinary insects.
Nevertheless, scientists in the laboratory have already succeeded in “growing” a material that has many of the characteristics of human skin. The next step may well be “biotech hearts and eyes” which can replace diseased organs in human beings. These will not be rejected by the body, as is the case with organs from humans.
The application of biotechnology to energy production seems even more promising. In 1996 the famous science fiction writer, Arthur C. Clarke, many of whose previous predictions have come true, said that we may soon be able to develop remarkably cheap and renewable sources of energy. Some of these power sources will be biological. Clarke and others have warned us repeatedly that sooner or later we will have to give up our dependence on non-renewable power sources. Coal, oil and gas are indeed convenient. However, using them also means creating dangerously high levels of pollution. It will be impossible to meet the growing demand for energy without increasing that pollution to catastrophic(灾难性的) levels unless we develop power sources that are both cheaper and cleaner.
It is attempting to think that biotechnology or some other “science of the future” can solve our problems. Before we surrender to that temptation we should remember nuclear power. Only a few generations ago it seemed to promise limitless, cheap and safe energy. Today those promises lie buried in a concrete grave in a place called Chernobyl(切尔诺贝利), in the Ukraine. Biotechnology is unlikely, however, to break its promises in quite the same or such a dangerous way.
68.According to the passage, the science of the future is likely to be __________.
A. electronics B. biotechnology C. genetic engineering D. nuclear technology
69. Organic chemistry helps to produce materials that are __________.
A. as good as wool
B. as good as an insect’s body
C. not as good as natural materials
D. better than natural materials.
70. According to the passage, it may soon be possible__________.
A. to make something as good as human skin
B. to produce drugs without side effects
C. to transplant human organs
D. to make artificial hearts and eyes
71. In 1996, Arthur C. Clarke predicted that ___________.
A. biological power sources would be put into use soon
B. oil, gas and coal could be repeatedly used in the future
C. dependence on non-renewable power sources would be reduced soon
D. the Chernobyl disaster would happen in two years
72. What do we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Biotechnology can solve all our future energy problems.
B. Biological power is cheaper than nuclear power.
C. Biological power may not be as dangerous as nuclear power.
D. Biological power will keep all its promises.
第二节 简答题(共3小题;每小题2分,满分6分)
阅读下面短文,根据第73至第75小题的具体要求,简要回答问题。
The announcement that two prestigious scientists, 92-year-old botanist Wu Zhengyi and 84-year-old petrochemical catalyst expert Min Enze, were awarded the State Scientific and Technological Award yesterday, has given due recognition to the unswerving(始终不渝的) dedication of both scientists to their scientific research career.
Their old age indicates that any scientific research endeavor requires whole-hearted devotion and perseverance.
China started the national science and technology award system in 2000 to pay tribute to those who have made outstanding achievements in scientific research and technological innovations, to encourage more scientists to devote themselves to the pursuit of advancing the country's ability to make worthy breakthroughs.
But the fact that none of the award winners are middle-aged or young scientists should serve as a reminder that a good environment is not necessarily a must for great breakthroughs.
Should those younger scientists learn anything from these top award-winners, it is perseverance and dedication that enables top minds to continue their research in whatever working conditions.
Some researchers or professors are obsessed with establishing connections to get their research projects approved, and then get financial aid. Some have been known to even cheat with fake scientific research findings for fame. yachuang100.com
In comparison, winning an award is not the ultimate goal of conducting scientific research. Instead, what really matters is the entire process, in which these scientists enjoy the repeated results of seeing substantial progress made with honest research.
Those who view scientific research with the prism of expediency(方便,私利) will never get anywhere. This has been confirmed by the experience of many remarkable scientists both home and abroad.

Lightning is one of the most beautiful natural phenomena. It is also one of the most deadly phenomena. A bolt of lightning is six times hotter than the surface of the Sun and gives out 30,000 amps of electricity. It can travel at 100,000 kilometers per hour and has the ability to hit a target up to 40 kilometers away. About 1,000 people worldwide are killed by lightning every year.
Only about ten percent of people struck by lightning will actually die, but the others are actually very badly injured, with burns, broken bones, blindness, deafness, paralysis, or memory loss. However, when the electricity passes through their brain, it can occasionally have unusual and even positive effects. Some blind people have got their sight back after being struck by lightning. One woman said a psychological test showed her intelligence had greatly improved, and one man said he could no longer feel cold at all and could go out in temperature below freezing in just a T-shirt!
So what should you do to stay safe in a thunderstorm? The most important rule is to stay inside –but do not go near phones, electrical appliances, plumbing, or water. If you are stuck outside, do not take shelter under a tree. Instead, roll yourself up into a ball on the ground as small as possible. And do not think it has to be raining in order for lightning to strike.
Strangely, lightning seems to prefer some people to others. If you are a man, you are six times more likely to be struck by lightning than a woman!

With the development of society, more and more attention has been paid to appropriate manners. However, there are still some inappropriate behaviors. For example, some bicyclists run the red traffic lights Some people throw litter in public places. In the cinema, it's not unusual to hear some people talking loudly on cell phones in front of others.Very often, We can see scrabbles in scenic spots.
I'm strongly against talking loudly in the cinema, for this behavior shows disrespect to others, Besides, it disturbs the audience around and makes others feel very annoyed. Therefore, some measures should be taken to prevent such behavour in public places.
