Good morning, ladies and gentlemen:
Nice to meet you here. I’d like to say it’s a good chance for me to learn from you .Here, my speech contains 4 parts. I would like to introduce them here with your great help.
I. The analysis of teaching material:
My speech is Section A , Unit 8. When is your birthday This is an important lesson in Book One. And it is the first lesson of this unit, it talks about the date,the months and the ordinal numbers(1st to 31st) .The students have learned the numeral words, it’s helpful for them to learn this unit. But it’s difficult for them to understand the difference between these two kinds of words and how to use. And this topic is related to our daily life closely, so it’s very useful and it’s helpful to make the students be interested in English.
New words: January,February,March, April,May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December. 1st to 31st.
Structure: When is your birthday
My birthday is….
Teaching aims:
1. Aims on the knowledge:
1. To study the 12 months and the ordinal numbers.
2. To make the students know how to ask others’ birthdays and how to read the date.
2. Aims on the abilities:
1. To develop the students’ ability of listening ,speaking, reading and writing.
2. To train the students’ ability of communication.
3. Aims on the emotion:
⑴.To make the students be interested in good co-operation.
⑵To make the students love life.
Teaching key points and difficult points:
1. How to help the students remember so many new words quickly.
2. How to make the students work well with their partners.
3. How to help the students to find out the regularity of the ordinal numbers, that is adding “th”to the numeral words .
4. How to enable the students to make a survey.
Ⅱ.Teaching methods I will take.
1.“Communicative” teaching method.
2. “Task-based” teaching method.
Everyone knows that the main aims of learning English in middle school is to cultivate the students’ basic abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing, and their good sense of the English language.
Ⅲ. Learning methods.
Firstly, Look, listen, and say to gain language competence.
Secondly, Teamwork, exploration and participation to reach the goal.
Thirdly, Cultivate skills in listening, speaking, reading and expressing.
Fourthly, Students-centered and teacher-guided learning strategies. I’m not a teacher but a guider. I’m ready to give them help whenever they need and re-correct the mistakes while talking.
Ⅳ.Teaching procedure design.
Step1. Warm-up.
Ask the students some easy questions to check if they have remembered the contents they had learned before. For example: What’s your name What’s your telephone number What’s this and so on. It will take about 2minutes.
Step2. Presentation.
1. Leading in new words : here I will use some flash cards to present the new words. They are pictures of festivals in each month, except in November, I will show a picture of a birthday cake, a date ( November 21st ) is on the picture. I will tell the students that is my birthday.
The reason of my design: I think the students can learn the words easily and directly in this way. And I also think it can draw the students’ attention and arouse their interest in learning English. With the help of the flash cards, it can provide a real situation to understand the meaning of the words, not by presenting the new words one by one and telling them the Chinese meaning. So the students can remember the words quickly and naturally. It will take about 11 minutes.
2.Exploration and conclusion:
Because I think with my necessary help, if the students can find out the regularity by themselves, they will have a good sense of success, and they will be more interested in learning English. So in this part, I will write down the ordinal numbers. shown in the pictures first, ask the students to look at these words carefully and try to find out the regularity. But I must tell them that first,second,and third are special, others are regular. I think most students can find out that is adding “th”. Then give them a conclusion at a right time and teach them to read the words from 1st to 31st, and make sure they can. And I will practise speaking some more date words with the students to get ready for the following dialogue.It will take about 6 minutes.
3.Teaching the dialogue:
Here I will show the picture of my birthday cake again. I have told them that is my birthday, now I can ask the students’ birthday naturally. “My birthday is November 21st, when is your birthday ” Here, maybe someone will feel a little difficult to answer my question, especially the date, so I may need to help them when they need. Ask some more students, and write the dialogue on the blackboard. Make sure they can read and understand the meaning, then make them to ask their partners’ birthday. It will take about 5 minutes.
4. Practice and Groupworking : Divide the students into groups of three. I will make a dialogue with two students to give them an example first :
T: When is your birthday
A: My birthday is June 4th.
T: When is his birthday
B: His birthday is June 4th.
Ask them to make a similar dialogue and tell them that if they can act it out well, they can get an A, I think it can encourage them to try their best and cooperate with their partners well. It will take about 11 minutes.
5. Listening: listen to the tape and number the conversations 1-3. It’s Activity 1b.It will take about 2 minutes.
Step3. Post-task. Making a survey.
Finding out the popular month in their class. I will ask the students to find out in which month , there are the most students have their birthdays, that month is the popular month. I will choose 12 students, their birthdays are in different months, and I want to ask these 12 students to survey their classmates’ birthdays. If someone’s birthday is in January, he or she should join the January group, the same as the other 11 months. At last, if there are the most students in January group, January is the popular month in their class, if it is in February, February is the popular month.
I think making the survey is the consolidation of this lesson. It can revise and consolidate the months and ordinal words very well. It will take about 8 minutes.
