Global WarmingWhat’s wrong with our earth?methaneCarbon dioxideWater vapourGreenhouse EffectPre-reading 1. What is a greenhouse made of and used for?
2. How does it
work?
A greenhouse is made of glass and is used for growing plants, especially during cold weather. How does it work?
The air inside is warm because the glass
traps the heat from the sun and keeps
it from escaping. This makes the
greenhouse heat up and so the
plants can grow
throughout the
cold period.
What are the “greenhouse gases”?
In the atmosphere surrounding the
earth there are gases, which are
called “greenhouse gases”,
including carbon dioxide,
methane(甲烷, 沼气)
and water vapor.
What do you think greenhouse
gases do?
They trap heat from the sun
and therefore
warm the earth.SO…The earth is becoming
warmer and warmer----
But does it matter?YES & NO ???Maybe… The sea level will riseMaybe…There will have some disasters,
such as…Flood!DroughtFamine
Forest Fire!…Read the text as fast as possible
and answer the questions:
Who wrote the magazine article?
What is the name of the magazine?
2. What are names of the three
scientists mentioned in the text?
3. What are they think about global
warming?
4. What are the two graphs about?
5. What is the main topic of the
article?
Who wrote the magazine article?
What is the name of the magazine?
Sophie Armstrong The name of the magazine is
Earth Care.
2. What are names of the three scientists
mentioned in the text?
They are Dr. Janice Foster,

Charles Keeling and George Hambley.3. What do they think about global warming?
Do they agree with one another?
They don't agree with each other.
Dr. Janice Foster thinks the effects could be
very serious. George Hambley thinks global warming will
be mild with few bad environmental
consequences.
Charles Keeling believes it is the burning of
more and more fossil fuels that is resulting in
a big increase in carbon dioxide.
It shows that the temperature increased one degree Fahrenheit from 1860 to 2000.4.What are the two graphs about? This graph shows the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere increased steadily from 1957 to 1997.4. What is the main topic of the
article?
global warming/
the warming of the earth.Listen to the tape and try to find
out the following statements are
true or false? If it is true,
write a “T”. If it is false, write a
“F”.And then explain why it is false. The temperature last century didn’t increase much .
Everyone believes that global warming is caused by the activities of humans.
Janice Foster believes that global warming is caused by burning fossil fuels .
Natural gas is a greenhouse gas .
Carbon dioxide is a byproduct
of burning fossil fuels.FFTFT(副产品)6 People accept Charles Keeling’s data because he took accurate measurements .
7 Flooding could be one of the effects of future global warming .
8 George Hambley believes scientists are just guessing about the effects of global warming .
9 George Hambley is worried about the effects of carbon dioxide on plant growth .
10 It is clear what the effects of global warming will be . TTTFFWhat is global warming?
2. How has the global warming
come about?
3. What are the effects of
global warming?Detail-reading
Discuss the following questions:What is global warming? The earth is becoming warmer.2. How has global warming come about?Human activityburning of fossil fuelsGreenhouse effectgreenhouse gases we need those gases from around 315 parts per million to around 370 parts per millionHuge quantities of extra carbon dioxideFrom 1957 to 19973. What are the effects of global
warming?
Bad points:
1. The sea level to rise

2.Severe storms,droughts,
famines,the spread of diseases
and the destruction of species.Good points:1.Make plants grow faster2.Crops will produce more3.Encourage a greater range of
animals
4.The different ideas between Dr. Janice Foster & George Hambley go upcatastrophevery seriouspositiveproduce a greater range of animalsRead the text carefully and sum up
the main idea of each part.Part 1.--------Para 1Part 2.-------Para2-3Part 3.-------Para4-8 Part 4.-------Para9Part one:Para1Introduce a debate over the issue of global warmingPart two:Para2-3Illustrate (explain) how global warming comes about. List two different attitudes among scientists
towards global warming It’s up to readers to think and decide whether
people should do something about global
warming or not .Part three: Para4-8Part four:Para 9
The earth is becoming warmer, in
your opinion, does it matter? If it
does, as a student, what can you
do about it?Discussion:Homework:1.Read the passage again and think
about the following question
“What can we do about global
warming?”2.Finish the Ex.1 and Ex.2 on page 28.
