二、过去完成时的用法
1、强调过去一段时间内连续不停地做着某件事。
给出明确的时间范围
He had been waiting for two weeks. 他等待了两个星期，那时还在等。
Up to that time he had been translating those books.? 直到那时，他一直在翻译这些书。
He was then thirty years old.? He had been practising wushu since he was ten.
他那时三十岁.自从十岁开始,他一直在练习武术. (2) 给出另外一件事作对比
? They had been talking for over an hour before Tony arrived. Tony 来之前，他们一直等了一个多小时。
? She had been working at that company for three years when it went out of business. 在工厂歇业之前，她一直在那家公司工作了三年。
? James had been teaching at the university for more than a year before he left for Asia. 在动身去亚洲之前，James 在那所大学教了三年的书。(3) 根据说话人的意思
? 当然，也有很多情况下，句子并没有给出时间范围或对比的事。这就要根据说话人的意思来决定了。
? He had been standing there in the sun.? 他一直站在太阳底下。
? How long had you been waiting to get on the bus? 为了坐公共汽车，你等了多长时间？
2、过去完成进行时目前的状态
某个动作从过去开始一直持续到过去某个时间(或另一个动作发生)，那么，它目前的状态如何呢？如果推测一下，不外乎两种可能：一种是还在持续，目前没有结束；第二种情况是那个动作结束了。究竟是什么状态，应该根据句子上下文来分析。
Mike wanted to sit down because he had been standing all day at work. Mike 想坐下来，因为他站着工作一整天了。(工作已结束)

He came back at seven.? He had been waiting for her two hours.? 他在七点回来了。他等了她两个小时。(停止)

He had been writing the letter till two o'clock.? 他写信写到2点钟。(信没有写完)

We had been studying what our partners had said.? 我们一直在研究我们合作者说的话。(还在研究)

He had been asking me the same question.? 他总是在问我同样的问题。(可能还会问)
? 3、用来表示另一件事的原因或者情绪等。

?
有两类动词不适宜用过去完成进行时，一是短暂动作的动词，还有一类是侧重于表示状态的动词。这一点与现在完成时、现在完成进行时是一样的。例如：
在Tina购买之前,那辆摩托车一直属于George的。 [正确] The motorcycle had belonged to George for years before Tina bought it. [错误] The motorcycle had been belonging to George ...
? 四、与过去完成时的区别
? 简单地说，过去完成进行时强调的是持续的状态，而过去完成时侧重于强调两点：
? 1、过去两件事相比，最早发生的一件事用过去完成时。它侧重于说明事件的先后顺序。
? By the time he was twelve, Edison had began to make a living by himself. 到他12岁的时候,Edison 已经开始自己谋生了
? I had worked in Wuhu before I decided to go to Hefei. 我打算去合肥之前，在芜湖工作过。2、过去完成时强调动作的结果。

I had been to Ireland before I wrote this book about Ireland's people. 我写这篇有关爱尔兰的小说以前，曾去过爱尔兰。

I had studied calculus before I got into college. 我在上大学以前，已经学过微积分。五、与过去进行时的区别

过去进行时有两个特点：
?
1、在过去某个时间“点”正在发生的动作。
I first met Mary three years ago. She was working at a radio shop at the time. 我第一次遇到玛丽是在三年前，当时她在一家无线电商店工作。

I was cooking when she knocked at the door. 她敲门时我正在做饭。
?2、过去进行时也能表示在过去一段时间内持续发生的动作。当然，它们还是有一点区别：过去进行时表示的“持续”可能中间有停顿，而过去完成进行时则更强调动作一直没有停。这种细微区别，只有靠读者去体会了。
? 我昨晚一直在写信。 过去进行时：
I was writing a letter all the night yesterday. [可能写一会儿，再做其它事，然后再接着写。]
? 过去完成进行时：
I had been writing a letter all the night yesterday. [强调我一直在写，中间没有做其它事。]Thank you

二、过去完成时的用法
