more than+名词意为“不仅仅”,more than just相当于not only, not just的意思。如:

【拓展】
(1) more than+数词,意为“超过”相当于over,其反义词组为less than。如
There are more than two hundred people in the park.
公园里有200多人。
(2)“more than+形容词/副词”是“很”或“非常”的意思。如:
I am more than content with what you said.
我对你的讲话十分满意。
She was dressed more than simply.
她穿着太朴素了。
(3) 在“more ... than ...”结构中,肯定“more”后面的内容而否定“than”后面的部分,常译为“是…… 而不是……” 或 “与其说……不如说……” 。如:
Hearing the loud noise, the boy was more surprised than frightened.
听到这巨大的声响,男孩与其说是害怕不如说是感到很惊讶。
Phrase “a great deal & a great deal of”
【辨析】a great deal 为副词性短语,可在句中作状语,修饰动词或形容词和副词的比较级。也可用作名词性短语,在句中作主语或宾语。此时均不加of 。如:
We laughed a great deal when we heard it. 我们听到后笑了好一阵。
a great(good)deal of 表示“许多”,为形容词性短语,作定语,只能修饰不可数名词。如:A great(good)deal of time has been wasted in the last two weeks.
两周来浪费了大量的时间。
【拓展】在英语中有很多的词组可以用来表达“许多的;大量的”的含义,主要根据后面所接的名词来区分:
1. 只能修饰“可数名词”的词或词组有:a great (large) number of/a great many/many
2. 只能修饰“不可数名词”的词或词组有:a great deal of/a large amount of/much
3. 两者都可以修饰的词组有:a lot of ( lots of )/a mass of/ masses of/plenty of 。如:
After the happening of Wen Chuan Earthquake, a great number of volunteers from all over the country poured to Si Chuan to offer their love.
汶川地震发生之后,大量来自全国各地的志愿者都涌向四川去奉献爱心。
A great many kinds of books are provided in the national library.

【点拨】possess 用作动词时,不能用于进行时。有多种不同的含义:
1. “有,拥有”。如:
The library possesses a number of the artist’s early works.
图书馆里藏有那位画家的一些早期作品。
2. “具有……的特质”。常见搭配有 be possessed of sth,意为“具有某种品质或特征”。如:
I’m afraid he doesn’t possess a sense of humor.
恐怕他没有什么幽默感。
He is possessed of great natural ability. 他很有天赋。
3. “支配,控制”。如:
A terrible fear possessed her. 一阵恐惧攫住了她。
[拓展] possession n.
1. 持有,具有,拥有( 为不可数名词)。如:
The players fought for possession of the ball. 球员们争着拿球。
2. 财产,所有物(多用作复数)。如:
Because of the big earthquake, many people lose all their possessions.

3. 拿到,占领。如:
The possession of a passport is essential for foreign travel. 出国旅游必须持有护
possession常用搭配有:take possession of“占领,夺取” ;in possession of“占有,拥有” ;in the possession of sb.“在某人手中,由某人掌握” ;come into possession of “占有”。
[注意] in possession of和in the possession of的区别:
这两个短语都表示“占有”之意,但前者表示主动意义,后者表示被动意义。因此,前者一般译作“占有”,后者译为“在某人手中,由某人掌握”。 如:
Our company is now in possession of those buildings.
现在是我们公司占有那些楼房。
Those buildings are now in the possession of our company.现在那些楼房归我们公司所有。
