When the musical sound rings you, you immediately reach for your pocket ready to have a chat. But although you probably use it all the time, have you ever stopped to think about the manners related to talking on the phone? If you haven’t, here are some tips to guide you.
●Always give the person you are calling plenty of time to get to the phone before you hang up. If the person who answers is not the one you want, give your name and ask if you may speak to the person you want.
●Think about the time you call people. Try not to call too early in the morning(before about 9:00)or too late at night(after about 9:30). Also try not to call at mealtimes.
●If you go by plane to visit your relatives at Christmas, remember to follow airline instructions. Cell phones must be turned off as soon as the plane doors are closed and remain so until the doors open again on arrival.
●When face to face with someone, do not talk on the phone. It is rude to be on the phone when a waiter is trying to take your order in a restaurant, or when you are returning the shoes you have just been trying on in a shop. Finish any face-to-face business before taking a call. Continuing to use the phone while nodding to the person in front of you is quite impolite.
●When in a restaurant with your friends, keep phone conversations short. Make a call only if it is important. Practise speaking in a low voice. If no one looks your way, you’ve got it.
●If you go to a theatre, a concert or a cinema, consider the other people around you. Check that your phone is “off” before you enter. If you are expecting a very important call, put your phone on “vibrate”(振动)and run for the exit as soon as you feel it. If you forget both “off” and “vibrate” and your phone rings, don’t answer it, turn it off straight away.
56. Which is true according to the passage above?
A. You may call people anytime as you like.
B. You may talk loudly on the phone at dinner in the restaurant.
C. You may keep on talking on the phone while greeting somebody.
D. You may call people as soon as you get on the plane, but not after the doors are closed.
57. We may infer from these tips that__________.
A. some people don’t pay much attention to manners while making cell phone calls
B. you may ask to leave a message unless the person you are calling is in
C. calling people too early or too late in the morning is not polite
D. almost everyone has got a cell phone
58. What does the underlined sentence “…you’ve got it” mean in the passage?
A. You have succeeded in making a call without disturbing others.
B. You have made the phone call brief and interesting.
C. You’ve got the message you are waiting for.
D. You have made a phone call secretly.
59. From the tips given above, we can decide the writer is sure to share the opinion that______.
A. 1ike the saying “clothes make a man”, nowadays cell phones make a man
B. as the old saying goes, money talks; nowadays cell phones talk
C. the way we use the cell phones tells what we are like

Queen Victoria was monarch of Great Britain from 1837 until her death in 1901. This period is often called the Victorian Age.
Queen Victoria was a stern and serious woman. One reason she was so serious was that she had suffered a great loss. When she was twenty years old, she married a German prince named Albert. Victoria and Albert were deeply in love, and their marriage was extremely happy. In 1861, after they had been married for twenty-one years, Albert died, leaving Queen Victoria heartbroken. For the rest of her life, the lonely Victoria mourned her loss. It was customary in those days for a widow to dress in black for a short time after the death of her husband. But Queen Victoria dressed in black for forty years. And for forty years, as another sign of her grief, she wrote her letters white paper edged in black.
Even before Prince Albert died, Queen Victoria was known as a very serious woman. She had a strong sense of duty and worked very hard at all her tasks. In her diary she wrote, “ I love to be employed; I hate to be idle.” She never forgot that she was Britain’s queen and always acted with great dignity. Victoria had high ideals and moral standards that sometimes made her seem stuffy. She was also very sure of herself. She always thought that she was right, and she expected everyone to agree with her.

第Ⅱ卷(非选择题 两部分 共35分)
第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

Carla walked 45 minutes a day, every day, as part of her exercise regime. After two years of walking she began to notice her right foot hurt and she was always adjusting her laces (带子). A visit to the family doctor resulted in her going to the last place she thought he’d send her: a shoe store.
Her solution was simple: new sneakers, fitted by a professional. Many people suffer for years without realizing their pain is caused by improperly fitted shoes and that’s why it’s important consumers be aware of how to choose footwear. Here are some tips to keep your feet happy and pain free.
Have your feet measured before you make a shoe purchase. Make sure you measure both feet, since most of us have one foot larger than the other. Always purchase shoes to fit the largest foot.
Try both shoes on and walk in them before you buy. Sizes vary, as do styles and shoe shapes. A size 8 in one brand might fit perfectly, while a 7- and-half in another is too loose in the heel.
Your feet swell during the day, so make sure you only shop for shoes in the evening.
There should be a three-eighths to 5 inch space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.
The ball of your foot should fit comfortably into the widest part of the shoe.
Before buying shoes of any kind ensure that the heel fits well and there is no slippage.
Look for shoes that are similar in shape to your feet. Some brands and styles are narrower than others, or have a narrow heel.
High heels can cause not only foot pain, but posture problems and back pain, as well. For these reasons women should avoid high heels. If you must wear them, never go over 2- and-a-half inches in heel height.
Always buy shoes that fit now. Shoes do not stretch and there is no such thing as “breaking them in”.
Wear the same type of socks or nylons you will be wearing with the shoe. If you’re purchasing sneakers, wear athletic socks. For high heels, wear nylons during the fitting session.

Dear editor,
Recently our class have had a heated discussion on how middle school students should make friends.
As we all know, good interpersonal relationship plays an important role in building harmonious society.
Many people suggest that they should make friends who are of great benefit to their studies, so they will help each other and make greater progress with their studies. Some believe that they should have friends related to their life. Whenever they have difficulty dealing with problems in terms of life, they can help rid themselves of the problems. In addition, others agree that they should have some friends who can listen to them attentively and share their bitterness and joy.
What I want to stress is that each of us should have a true friend. To make friends, we should try to remember the names of the people we contact and learn not to judge people by their appearances. Besides, we need to be friendly and care about them. When disagreement does occur, it's wise of us to talk it over to others. In brief, making true friends can really enable us to improve ourselves.
Yours ever,
Li Hua

In my spoken English class, I asked the students about their impressions of their university life. To my surprise, many of them expressed disappointment. After their highly controlled high school lives, they were having difficulty adjusting to the free time in the university. When I asked them to describe their high school lives, many of them told me they got up at six in the morning and studied until ten at night. Most of this time was spent at school, doing piles of homework to help them prepare for the university entrance exams.
Once they entered the university, in my opinion, the students are not expected to devote all their waiting hours to studying, they should also take an active part in social activities. Therefore, they should learn to divide their time outside of the class between sports and clubs. What’s more, they should spend some time watching TV and chatting with their roommates. These activities are useful in helping them prepare for their future. But what struck me most was that many of them did not seem particularly happy about their new found freedom. As they had so many choices, they felt that no matter what they were doing, they should be doing something else. That’s why they were not happy.
To those students, my advice was, get used to it and learn to make decisions for yourselves.

Beginning college is exciting: new ideas to explore, new challenges to be met and many decisions to be made; your future begins here.
However, you will find college life is different from your previous school environment. Many of us can be easily overwhelmed by the details of running a well-balanced life. While some of us may have the know-how, I guess there are more of us who can benefit from learning about the experiences of others who have walked the college halls before you.
The following you may find of use about life on campus:
Plan well. There are so many new things to do at a new college or university. Give yourself time to make new friends and became familiar with the campus, but don’t forget why you are there. Give some time for social activities and manage your time wisely.
If you don’t have a “system” for planning your time now, get one. Most of all, don’t depend on your memory.
Don’t miss the guidelines. The restrictions, rules and regulations of all kinds can usually be found in your student’s handbook. Consider them well-balanced food for thought. What dates are important? What pieces of paper need to be handed in? What can / can’t you do in your student residence (住处)? Who has the right for what? What do you need to complete to graduate?
Write the word “STUDY” on the walls of our bedroom and bathroom, and maybe it will help to write it on a piece of paper and stick it on the telephone, TV and the kitchen table. Consider this—you are paying thousands of dollars for your course. You pay every time you have to repeat or replace a course.
Build your identity. This is the time for you to decide what to do and what not to do. Take as much time as you need to explore new ideas. Do not be afraid of the beyond. This is learning to make good choices.

Almost everyone likes to eat apples. Apples grow in nearly every part of the world; The United States produces more apples than any other country except France. The states of Washington and New York grow the most apples. Perhaps this is why “New York” is often called “Big Apple” by some people. New York is on the east coast and Washington is on the west near Canada.
Apples are red, yellow or green. They are very popular in the United States. Many people like to carry apples to work or to school to eat with their lunches. Most American people are often too busy or too tired to cook dinner, so they often have their dinners very simply. Apple juice is also a popular drink and apple pie is the favorite sweet dish for many Americans.
The state of Washington is proud of its apples. The trees there produce nearly five billion apples every year—one apple for every man, woman and child in the whole world.
There are many stories and sayings about apples. For example, “You are the apple of my eye.” means “You are actually the one I love best and care most.” In China, it is a custom in some places for the marrying couple to hold an apple in each one’s hand, promising that their marriage will be “safe” without anything bad and that their marriage will never be broken. “To apple polish” often refers to a man who fawns (奉承) on somebody for the purpose of getting some benefits. So you can easily get “apple polisher”. While “in apple-pie order” usually has the same meaning as “in good order”. It is likely that you hear about “compare apples and oranges”. In fact, it’s another saying about “compare two things that can’t be compared”.
60. What can we know from the underlined sentence?

C. Because people in China have no opinions of their own.
D. Because it stands for “happiness of marriage”.
63. If you are satisfied with the order of something, you will use the following phrase “_______”.
A. Apple of one’s eye B. To apple polish C. In apple-pie order D. The big apple

Electronic devices are changing the way people listen to music. But studies show the devices may be causing hearing loss in many people. Some experts say people may be playing them too loud and for too long.
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association did a study. It involved three hundred high school students and one thousand adults.
Forty percent of students and adults said they set the sound levels, or volume, at high on their iPods. But students were two times more likely to play the music at a very loud volume. More than half of the students said they would probably not limit their listening time. And about a third said they were not likely to reduce the volume.
Hearing experts say part of the problem is the listening equipment people are using. They say large earphones that cover the whole ear are probably safer than the smaller earbuds that come with most music players. Earbuds are thought to be less effective than earphones in blocking out foreign noises.
Hearing loss may not be apparent for years. But once it happens, it is permanent. About thirty million Americans have some hearing loss. One third of them lost their hearing as a result of loud noises.
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association is working with manufacturers (生产商) and government officials on setting rules for use of portable music devices. The group says the best way to protect your hearing is to reduce the volume, limit listening time and using earphones that block out foreign noises.
67. According to the study, more than half the students ________.
A. keep listening to music for a long time ?B. would reduce the volume of music
C. would stop listening to music D. would reduce the time on listening to music
68. Which is NOT true according to the fourth paragraph?
A. The listening equipment used by people need to be improved.
B. Earbuds can’t block out foreign noises completely.
C. Most music players are equipped with earbuds.
D. Listening to music with large earphones on is less effective.
69. We can conclude from the text that ________.
A. only when rules for use of portable music device are worked out, can hearing loss
disappear
B. manufacturers are the main cause that leads to hearing loss
C. it was not listening equipment but listeners themselves that mainly result in hearing loss
D. using large earphones is the best way to protect your hearing
70. The underlined word “apparent” means _________.
A. anxious B. obvious C. serious D. conscious
第四部分 任务型阅读 (共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后的空格内填入最恰当的单词. 每空格1个单词,不得用文章中的单词。
Humans are social animals. They live in groups all over the world. As these groups of people live apart from other groups, over the years and centuries they develop their own habits and ideas, which form different cultures. One important particular side of every culture is how its people deal with time.
Time is not very important in non-industrial societies. The Nuer people of East Africa, for example, do not even have a word TIME that is in agreement with the abstract thing we call time. The daily lives of the people of such non-industrial societies are likely to be patterned around their physical needs and natural events rather than around a time schedule based on the clock. They cook and eat when they are hungry and sleep when the sun goes down. They plant crops during the growing seasons and harvest them when the crops are ripe. They measure time not by a clock or calendar, but by saying that an event takes place before or after some other event. Frequently such a society measures days in terms of “sleeps”. Some cultures, such as the Eskimos of Greenland measure seasons according to the migration of certain animals.
Some cultures that do not have a written language or keep written records have developed interesting ways of “telling time”. For example, when several Australian aborigines want to plan an event for a future time, one of them places a stone on a cliff or in a tree. Each day the angle of the sun changes slightly. In a few days, the rays of the sun strike the stone in a certain way. When this happens, the people see that the agreed-upon time has arrived and the event can take place.
In contrast, exactly correct measurement of time is very important in modern, industrialized societies. This is because industrialized societies require the helpful efforts of many people in order to work. For a factory to work efficiently(well, quickly and without waste), for example, all of the workers must work at the same time. Therefore, they must know what time to start work in the morning and what time they may go home in the afternoon. Passengers must know the exact time that an airplane will arrive or depart. Students and teachers need to know when a class starts and ends. Stores must open on time in order to serve their customers. Complicated societies need clocks and calendars. Thus, we can see that if each person worked according to his or her own schedule, a complicated society could hardly work at all.

书面表达参考例文:
Dear editor,
I’m writing to tell you about the discussion we recently had about whether our parents should accompany us studying at school.
We do have different opinions on this matter. Most of us (about 70%) think our parents should not
accompany us studying at school since it makes us fall into the habit of dependence, so that we
won’t form the good habit of studying. What ‘s more, it is harmful for us to develop the habit of
controlling ourselves. At the same time, it affected our parents’ work , studies and rest.
While about 30% of my classmates think it necessary for our parents to accompany us studying
at school. Accompanying us studying at school can let us have more time to spare for our studies.
Besides, we shall be healthier for their cooking. On the other hand, our parents can help us set
up our aim, finish our task, encourage us to overcome difficulties and get us into the good habit of
studying.

W: I don’t think we’ve used the telephone more than usual, have we?
M: but the prices of long-distance calls and telegrams are very high. Who made all these expensive calls to London? I don’t remember making them. Do we know anyone in London?
W: Oh, they must be Jack’s calls. Anne was staying in London with her uncle in October. Jack rang her up nearly every evening.
M: Oh, did he? Well, he can pay for the call, then.
W: Jack’s only earning 30 pounds a month.
M: What long talks they must have had!
W: Yes, but do remember they are young. I’ll pay for Jack’s calls to Anne. Father sent me a check for Christmas, you remember, I haven’t spent it all yet.
M: I wasn’t serious, dear. Use your father’s money for yourself. I’m sure there are lots of things you like.

W: Excuse me, can you tell me what the letters NBA mean?
M: It’s short for “National Basketball Association”.
W: I’m sorry for the famous NBA star---Michael Jordan’s ex-service.
M: So am I.
W: But anyhow, I like the NBA. After all it is a training camp for all famous basketball stars all over the world.
M: Ya, I think so. I regret for Jordan’s ex-service, but some new stars like O’Neal and Yao Ming light up the stadium again. Last Saturday, in the East Vs West National Star competition, O’Neal won the value player, and Yao Ming is also the focus star in the world now. He is so tall.
W: I watched the whole competition. They really played wonderfully. But in my personal opinion, in skill none of them is superior to Michael Jordan.
M: He is really a myth in basketball.

If you want to get along well in the United States, the following “dos” and “don’ts” are helpful. As a rule, it isn’t easy to find anyone to talk to in a big city. However, here are some suggestions. First, get or borrow a dog. Walk with it several times a day. Americans love dogs and usually stop to talk to anyone with a dog. Then, try to eat in a public dinning hall. People generally share the same tables and will sometimes talk to you if they see that you are a stranger. Next, take your dirty clothes to a public washing shop. It takes about an hour to wash and dry, and many people wait there. They often pass the time talking to other customers. Always ask for information from a woman, if you are a man. And from a man if you are a woman. It seems to get better results for a reason I can’t understand. Learn the expressions, “please”, “ Thank you”, “You are welcome” before you come and use them all the time! There are some things you shouldn’t do. Don’t ask people their age, especially women! Everyone wants to be young. Never tell heavy people they are fat. Tell them they are losing weight. Everyone here wants to be thin. Don’t be late for an appointment! When someone says 6 o’clock, be sure to be there by six---Americans respect time and expect everyone to be “on time”.
