Briton Andy Park has probably the rarest addiction in the world. He’s addicted to celebrating Christmas.
Park, 45, is known as “Mr. Christmas” in Britain. He has been celebrating the December 25 holiday on a daily basis for the past 12 years. He’s eaten 4,380 turkeys and 87,600 pies, drunk 4,380 bottles of champagne (香槟酒), and 5,000 bottles of wine, given 21,900 presents, mostly to himself, and spent a fortune on lights and decorations. Dinner is roast turkey, wine and a bottle of champagne.
He lays his present to himself under the Christmas tree at 8:00 pm.
He even insists on a full Christmas dinner if he goes to a restaurant or to a friend’s house for dinner.

BEIJING — They may not kick like Bruce Lee, or even act like Jackie Chan, but for the 18 teenage boys living at the Heng Xing Ying Shi Kung Fu Acting School, becoming a kung fu star is their dream.
Their families sent the boys to this expensive school run by Guo Shao Heng. They hope that the teacher — a prize-winning fighter in his teens who has been kicking and fighting his way through movie sets for 12 years as a movie-fight choreographer (编导) — can help them improve their fighting and acting skills enough to break into kung fu films.
“Kung fu fighters have less acting skills, and we want to create a school where they can learn not only to fight, but also act,” explains Mr. Guo, whose year-old program has placed a few students in movies and TV series.
These families sent their sons to Beijing and paid up to $1,000 a year for a strict three-year program of early morning and afternoon training six days a week.
Li Xiang paid a visit to the school — a 13-hour train ride from his village — because, he says, “I want to be a movie star.”
Though Beijing is the host of next year’s Summer Olympics, kung fu has so far failed to become an Olympic sport. Guo’s students are unconcerned: They’re looking for the riches of the silver screen, not Olympic gold.

Londoners are great readers. They buy large numbers of newspapers, magazines and books — especially paperbacks (平装书), which are still cheap in spite of ever- -increasing rises in the cost of printing. They still continue to buy “proper” books, too, printed on good paper.
There are many streets in London containing shops which specialize in (以……为主) book-selling. Perhaps the best known of these is Charing Cross Road in the very heart of London. Here bookshops of all sorts and sizes are to be found, from the celebrated one which is said to be “the biggest bookshop in the world” to the tiny, dusty little places which seem to have been left over from Dickens’ time. Some of these shops stock, or will make efforts to get, any kind of book, but many of them specialize in second-hand books, in art books, in foreign books, in books on economics, politics or any other subjects about which books may be written. One shop in this area specializes solely in books about ballet.
Although it may be the most convenient place for Londoners to buy books, Charing Cross Road is not the cheapest. For really cheap second-hand books, collectors must go to some less well-known places, to Farringdon Road, for example, in the East Central district of London. Bookshops are the finest buildings in this area. Instead, the booksellers come along each morning and put lots of books on to small barrows (手推车) which line the streets. The collectors, some professionals and some amateurs (业余爱好者), who have been waiting for them, run quickly towards the books. In places like this one can still, occasionally, pick up for a few pence an old book that may be worth many pounds.
48. According to the passage, we know that _____.
A. Londoners like borrowing books from libraries
B. Londoners like buying books, magazines and news-papers
C. Londoners like reading books in libraries
D. Londoners don’t like buying “proper” books
49. Charing Cross Road is well-known for _____.
A. lending books B. publishing books
C. printing books D. selling books
50. The underlined word “solely” in the second paragraph means “_____”.
A. wholly B. partly C. only D. seldom
51. What do we know from the last paragraph?
A. Where expensive new books are sold.
B. Where cheap new books are sold.
C. Where cheap old books are sold.
D. Where expensive old books are sold.

Last fall, beekeepers from states with warm climates began to report a sudden loss of honeybees. Losses were reported in twenty-four states in America. Today, some beekeepers say thirty percent to ninety percent of their honeybees are gone. Food prices could go up as a result. And some beekeeping businesses have failed.
Many kinds of plants, trees and grasses need bees to pollinate (给……授粉) them. Bees gather nectar (花蜜) from flowers during this process. The liquid gives them food and material to make honey. As the bees land on flowers, their bodies pick up and drop off pollen (花粉). Most flowering plants need pollination to reproduce.
Honeybees can die during the winter, but few dead bees have been found. Instead, the bees seem to have disappeared. Experts call the condition “colony collapse disorder (群体崩溃失调)”.
Agriculture Department official Caird Rexroad said the collapse threatens about fifteen billion dollars worth of the country’s farm economy. Mr. Rexroad said the cause of the sudden loss of bees is not clear. The number of honeybees had already fallen before the colony collapse disorder began.
Experts say the varroa mite (瓦螨) is at least partly responsible for the earlier decrease in honeybees. The mite is a tiny creature that feeds on honeybees. It may play a part in colony collapse disorder by carrying bee viruses, or the problem may be caused by other diseases and weather conditions.
A group of scientists are examining bees from more than one hundred colonies across the country.
Diana Cox-Foster of Pennsylvania State University is part of the scientific group. Cox-Foster says the nation needs honeybees that can defend themselves better against diseases and insects.
52. Some people have failed in beekeeping businesses because _____.
A. they want to make more money by doing something else
B. the climates were too warm to raise bees last fall
C. too many bees have disappeared for no reason
D. more and more people are beginning to raise bees
53. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to this passage?
A. It is normal that some bees die in the cold season.
B. Plants can’t live without bees.
C. Many bees have died because of the noise.
D. The researchers have thought of some ways to attract honeybees.
54. According to Caird Rexroad, _____.
A. the country’s farm economy won’t be affected
B. it is not known yet why the number of bees fell
C. the loss of honeybees is because of the varroa mite
D. the number of bees has greatly increased in the country
55. The passage mainly tells us that _____.
A. honeybees are important to plants, trees and grasses
B. many Americans are surprised at the loss of honeybees
C. strong honeybees are in great need in America
D. something unusual has happened to America’s honeybees
