Riding was the favourite activity of Thomas Jefferson, who was the third President of the United States. He usually rode good horses.
One day, he was riding outside Washington, when a jockey (赛马师) came near. He did not know the President, but his professional eye was attracted by Mr. Jefferson’s horse. He stopped and said that he wanted to buy the horse, but Mr. Jefferson politely refused his offer.
The jockey offered more money for the horse, because the closer he looked at the horse, the more he liked it. All of his offers were refused, which made him angry. He then became rude, but his rudeness left as little an impression as his money, for Jefferson had a very good temper. At last, he hit Mr. Jefferson’s horse with his whip, getting it to run suddenly. This would have thrown a less skillful rider to the ground, but Jefferson stayed on his seat, and controlled his horse well.
The jockey then gave up. He rode with Mr. Jefferson side by side and began to talk with him about politics. Jefferson joined in the conversation. When they got into the city and came close to the gate of the presidential mansion (总统府), Mr. Jefferson stopped, and politely invited the man to enter.
The jockey was surprised and asked,
“Why? Do you live here?”
“Yes” was the simple reply.
“Why, stranger, what’s your name?”
“My name is Thomas Jefferson.”
Embarrassed, the man quickly left, while the President looked at him with a smile and then rode through the gate.

Maybe, just maybe, a large and newly discovered asteroid(小行星) could hit the Earth — but probably not, astronomers said on Wednesday.
They have published a detailed report on the asteroid. It looked at first as if it could be on a collision course (碰撞航向) with the Earth, but it will take several more weeks to see for sure.
They are calling on astronomers around the world to take a look at the mile-wide block of rock, so that its orbit can be calculated.
At the same time, they say the possibility of its actually hitting is one in 6 million.
“I wouldn’t worry about it,” Tim Spahr, astronomer at the Minor Planets Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, said in a telephone interview. “Go win the lottery (彩票) first.”
Scientists say that if an asteroid half a mile wide hits the earth, a quarter of the world’s population will be killed. It is believed that a 6-mile-wide asteroid hits the earth every 100 million years. Because of this, the dinosaurs were wiped out 65 million years ago.
The new asteroid, called 2002 NTT, was seen earlier this month. Now 66 million miles away from the earth, it goes around the sun every 2.3 years.
60. From the report we know that ________.
A. the asteroid is sure to hit the earth
B. the asteroid will not hit the earth
C. it is still uncertain whether the asteroid will hit the earth
D. any asteroid could kill a quarter of the world’s population
61. The dinosaurs died out ______, according to the report.
A. because of 2002 NTT B. because of an asteroid
C. without reasons D. for unknown reasons
62. What does the report mainly talk about?
A. Dinosaurs died out about 65 million years ago.
B. Scientists found a new asteroid.
C. 2002 NTT goes around the sun every 2.3 years.
D. A newly-found asteroid might hit the earth.

One day, Tom was very thirsty. He poured some hot water from the thermos into his glass, and then put the cork back. Just as he was turning away from the thermos, the cork jumped up. Tom picked up the cork, put it back and pressed it with his hand. He thought it would stay there this time. But hardly had he picked up his glass when the cork jumped up again, even higher than before. Tom got angry. He pressed the cork with his two hands. To his relief, nothing happened to the cork this time. But to his great surprise, the thermos flew into the air. The steam pressure inside the thermos broke the bottom of the thermos.
21. A。That depends. / It all depends.
22. B。be disappointed at sth意为“对某事感到失望”;be disappointed to do sth表示“对做某事感到失望”;be angry with意为“对……感到生气”;depend on意为“依靠”。根据下文,“她”应该是对这件事感到很失望,所以选B。
23. B。这里应该是“科学奖”,表示参加比赛而获得的奖励,所以应该选award。price价格;praise赞扬;reward报酬, 酬金。
24. B。cheer up 鼓舞,使……振作起来;bring up抚养长大;grow up成长,长大;turn up出现;调高(音量)等。
26. A。“大厅里充满祥和的气氛……”,所以只能A。
27. C。now that既然;as if好像;even though即使;so far到目前为止。
29. C。in time“及时”,相当于early enough或soon enough。
31. C。此处为prevent ... (from) ...
32. C。astronomer“天文学家”;astronaut“宇航员,太空人”;astronomy“天文学”;astrology“占星术”。
34. C。Like what?
