What should you think about in trying to find your career(职业)? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any special strong or weak subjects but your records may show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.
Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at mental work or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills.
If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions, and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.
Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs(拇指) when you handle tools, perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures, it is better to face any weakness than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for example, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic about it but instead, recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.
36. Which of the following best sums up the first paragraph?
A. Using school performance to help to choose a career.
B. The importance of doing well at school.
C. The importance of being good at all subjects.
D. The direct value of school work.
37. The writer thinks that for a student to have a part-time job is probably _____.
A. a waste of time that could have been spent on study
B. helpful for his future work
C. a good way to make money
D. a good way to find out his weak points
38. According to the passage, if a student’s school record is not good, he _____.
A. will be a complete failure in his future work
B. will not be able to find a suitable job
C. will regret not having worked harder at school
D. may do well in his future work, too
39. The whole passage centers on _______.
A. picking out one’s strong and weak points
B. requiring knowledge by working hard at school
C. choosing a career according to what one is good at
D. developing one’s useful abilities through school work

People are making more and more demands on the world’s natural resources. If babies born in 1991 live for eighty years, the human population of the world may be anything from twice to three times the present total by 2070. In other words, they will have to share what is left of the earth’s resources with 15 billion other people. But hopefully there will be an important decrease in the growth of population. What if this does not happen? The answer is that by the time before the babies born in 1991 reach the age of 40 they could be sharing resources with as many as 10 billion other people.
Limiting the pollution of water and the atmosphere, controlling the output of the chemicals that may be causing the global warming and climate change, and eating less meat may go some help, but can anyone seriously imagine that these are going to solve the problems of the “baby class” of 1991?
There is no getting away from the fact that people are responsible for the present state of the world, and only people can solve the problems. The decisions have to be taken by people as members of national and local governments; as leaders and decision-makers in industry; as scientists and technologists; as professional engineers and designers; as religious leaders and individual citizens.
40. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. Making More Demands on the Natural Resources.
B. Limiting the Pollution of Air and Water.
C. Reducing the Word Population.
D. Saving the Babies of 1991.

C. The children of 1991 are not given good education.
D. The problems caused by babies born in 1991.
42. This short passage is probably taken from ______.
A. a news report B. a guide to the world
C. an article by a medical worker D. a government report
43. Which of the following is not mentioned in the last paragraph as people responsible for the present state of the world?
A. Officials B. Industrialists C. Businessmen D. Scientists

The purpose of all dams is to reduce or prevent flooding by controlling the water in a river. The United States Society on Dams lists many reasons why dams are important. It says they provide clean water to drink. They also provide water for industry and farming. They create lakes for fishing and other kinds of fun activities. Dams also provide water to produce hydroelectric power (水力发出的电).
Naming the biggest dam in the United States is not easy. Is it the tallest dam? The one that contains the most concrete material? Or the one that produces the most electricity?
If you ask an American to name the most famous dam in the country, he or she would probably say Hoover Dam. It is on the Colorado River near Las Vegas, Nevada. Hoover Dam was the tallest dam in the world when it was finished in 1936. Until 1948, it was also the largest producer of hydroelectric power.
But this is no longer true. The United States Society on Dams says the highest dam in the United States is the one on the Feather River near Oroville, California. The Oroville Dam is two hundred thirty-five meters high. It was completed in 1968 to provide electric power, drinking water and water for agriculture in central and southern California.
The dam that produces the most hydroelectric power in the United States is the Grand Coulee Dam in the state of Washington. It controls flooding on the Columbia River and is said to be the largest single producer of electricity in the country. It is the main source of electric power to the northwestern states. The Grand Coulee Dam was completed in 1942. It is one of the largest concrete structures in the world.
?Hoover Dam is still at the top of the list of dams in one way. The building of the dam created Lake Mead, the largest man-made lake in America. People use Lake Mead for boating, swimming and other activities that would not be possible in that desert area.
Which of the following is NOT the fun_ction of dams?

45. Hoover Dam can be named number one in that ______.
it is the largest concrete structure in the world
it produces the most hydroelectric power
it makes the largest man-made lake
it provides the most clean water to drink
36. Choose the right order of the following dams according to the construction time
Hoover Dam →?The Oroville Dam → Grand Coulee Dam
Hoover Dam → Grand Coulee Dam → The Oroville Dam
Grand Coulee Dam → The Oroville Dam → Hoover Dam
The Oroville Dam?→?Grand Coulee Dam → Hoover Dam
47.Which sentence is true according to the passage?
A. The purpose of all dams is to reduce or prevent flooding.
B. The dam that produces the most hydroelectric power in the United States is the Grand Cloud Dam.
C. The Oroville Dam isn’t the highest dam in the United States.
D. Naming the biggest dam in the United States is easy.

Internet use appears to cause a decline in psychological well-being, according to research at Carnegie Mellon University. Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more depression and loneliness than those who logged on (进入电脑系统) less frequently, the two-year study showed. And it wasn’t that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net actually appeared to cause the bad feelings.
Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others.
The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in well-being, researchers hypothesized (假设). Faceless, bodiless “virtual(虚拟的)” communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world via the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.
“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology perse(本身); it’s about how it is used,” says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study’s sponsors (发起人).? “It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.”
48. The passage is mainly about _______.
how to use the Net????
how to work on a new technology
the negative factors of the Net??
the benefits of the Net
49. The underlined word “their” in Paragraph 2 refers to ___.
A. the researchers’?????? B. the Net users’?
C. the websites’? ?? D. the Net world’s
50. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. People who spend more time on the Net are more depressed than those who spend less.
B. People who are depressed and lonely spend more time on the Net than others.
C.While using the Net, we should know how to use it wisely.
D. The Net will probably make the users feel less satisfied with their lives.

Playing is serous business for children. In fact, it’s what they do best! Ask them why they do it, and kids will probably say, “Because it’s fun!” But it’s much more than that. It’s also good for them. Studies show that from birth babies begin learning through play. They use their five senses to get know their new world. Touching allows them to discover how different things feel. Brightly colored toys and clothing help develop a baby’s sense of sight.
When small children choose which toy to play with, they begin developing their abilities in making decisions. Children love toys that allow them to use their imagination. Sometimes an empty box is more fun than a high-tech toy. That’s because a box can become anything a child imagines it to be.
Crayons, paints and Play-Doh(彩色塑泥) are also good because they allow children to crate. Traditional building blocks teach important pre-math skills like problem-solving. Playing doesn’t become any less important once children start school. Many valuable(有价值的) lessons about life are learned on the school playground. Kids learn how to share, take turns and play by the rules.

2. What help develop a baby’s sense of sight according to the passage?

Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Xu Hua. I’m a girl student of eighteen in Beijing Yuying Senior High School now. At six, I began to study at primary school and six years later, I went to junior high school. Now I have been studying here for three years and always doing well in all my subjects. I like English best, so I often practice English with Mr. Brown, my English teacher from America. I’m so good at English that I have won many prizes in English competitions. Now having read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain as well as The Old Man And the Sea by Hemingway in original, I find myself interested in American literature and hope to be admitted to advance my study of American literature at your university. Thank you!
Yours,
