Teaching objectives:
Pronounce and spell new words correctly.
Understand simple words, phrases or sentences by looking at objects, pictures or people.
Can use new words and new sentence patterns to describe people or objects.
New words:
happy, a present, pretty, a ribbon, a candle, a card
Language focus:
This is… / He’s…/She’s…/Happy birthday,…!/He has a…/ She has a…
Teaching aids:
picture cards, new word cards, some stickers for students, a recorder, a tape of ‘ Primary English For China’ (Book 3)
Teaching time:
40 minutes
Teaching Procedure:
Step One: Greeting and warm-up exercises
Ask students to describe some objects or people with correct words and sentence patterns accordingly while showing some pictures. E.g. This is a girl. She is very thin./ This is a clock. It’s round. / This is a boy. He is very short. And so on.
Step Two: Sing a song about party time
Since the students are so smart, let them sing ‘ It’s party time’ with Disney characters through the teaching software.
Step Three: Watch Disney about ‘ A birthday party’ and lead the new words.
Ask students to watch Disney about ‘ A birthday party’ carefully. Let them speak the words which have been mentioned in this cartoon. Lead and teach new words basing on the story. E.g.
T: Whose birthday party is it?
Ss : It’s Tillie’s.
T: What does Tillie have?
Ss: She has a birthday cake.
T: What is on the cake?
Ss: There are many candles.
T: Yes. There are some candles. Look, what is this? ( Show ‘ a candle’ to Ss, teaching this word. Ask Ss to speak this new word after T, and then spell the word together. Stick this word card on the board.)
T: Tilllie has many friends. The little elephant gives a present to Tillie. What are they?
Ss: Flowers.
T: Yes. The flowers are very ____
Ss : Beautiful!
T: We also can say the flowers are very ____ ( Some smart students know they also can use ‘ pretty’ to describe these flowers. While they speaking out ‘ pretty’, show this word card at once and teach this new word. After pronouncing and spelling this word with Ss together, stick this word card on the board.)
T: The little elephant gives Tillie these flowers as a birthday present.
( Show a present to Ss, teaching this new word and sticking this word card on the board.)
T: If you were Tillie’s friend. What else presents you can give Tillie ? ( There are many different answers from different students. Give Ss one minute to tell their own opinions.)
Tell Ss they’re so nice to give Tillie these beautiful presents. If I were Tillie’s friend, I would give her a pretty card. Show a card to Ss and then take out the word card. Let Ss read and spell the word after T and then stick the word card on the board.
T: Tillie has many friends and presents at her birthday party. Is she happy? Are her friends happy?
Ss: Yes, they are very happy.( Draw a happy face on the board and show this word card to Ss. Teach this word and stick the word card on the board.)

Step Four: Spell and read new words together . Make sentences with new words
T: Now we have learned these new words. Who can make some sentences with new words?
( Let Ss use these new words to make sentences with the sentence patterns they have learned before. Correct their faults at once.)

Step Five: Ask Ss to make a discussion with their deskmate about what they have at their birthday party. Review the sentence pattern ‘ I have…’
T: Tillie has a birthday cake at her birthday party. I has many birthday cards at my party. How about you? What do you have at your birthday party. Please discuss with your deskmate .
(Choose some Ss to tell to the whole class what they have at their birthday party with the sentence pattern ‘ I have…’ . Write ‘ I have a …’ on the board.)
Step Six: Learn and practice new sentence pattern ‘ He/She has a…’ with the teaching software.
T: You have different presents at your birthday party. Do you want to know what other pupils have at their birthday party? Now, let’s do the guessing game. If you are right. I will give a sticker to your group on the board.
(Emphasize the difference between ‘ I have’ and ‘He/She has’. Write down ‘He/She has a …’on the board.)
Step Seven: Sing the song ‘ It’s a party time’ again and summarize the text.
T: Today we have learn something about a birthday party. We have learned these new words (Ask Ss to read and spell the words again) Also ,we can make sentences with ‘He/She has a…’. (Ask Ss to make sentences with this new sentence pattern while pointing to the different word cards which have been sticked on the board)
E.g. He has a card. She has a present.
Sing the song ‘ It’s a party time’ together.
