Things in the kitchen (Book 9)
Teaching objectives:
Can describe kitchens with new words and correct sentences;
Can describe kitchens with past tense
Can make a dialogue with past tense
New words and topic vocabulary:
A messy cupboard, a tidy cupboard, an old fridge, a new fridge, dirty walls, clean walls,
A full sink, an empty sink, a full bin, an empty bin, yesterday
Language focus:
Yesterday, the bin was full, now, it is empty.
Yesterday, the walls were dirty, now they are clean.
The bin wasn’t empty.
The walls weren’t clean.

Powerpoint , word cards, a recorder, a tape of Book 9
Teaching time:
40 minutes
Teaching procedure:
Step one: Sing the Disney song ‘ Helping at home’ to cheer up students
Step two: Watch a story from Disney. Let students review the words and phrases about ‘Helping at home’
Step three: Review new words and topic vocabularies about the things in the kitchen with two pictures.
T: Now you know Snow White has a clean house. You are smart boys and girls. Can you tell the differences from the following pictures? E.g. In Picture A the fridge is dirty, in Picture B
The fridge is clean.
Step four: Learn new sentence patterns with past tense through a story (Showing the pictures in powerpoint to students)
Yesterday( Review the meaning of this key word), Coco invited his friends to his home. He wanted to cook for his friends, but when he came to the kitchen , he was very surprised. What can he see? (Let students answer this question freely and correct them at once with past tense while they watching the relevant pictures)
The bin was full. It wasn’t empty.
The walls were dirty. They weren’t clean.
Write down these topic vocabularies on the board and emphasize we use past tense here because this story happened yesterday.
Step five: Ask students what they can do for Coco since they learn how to help at home.
Step six: Chant from ‘Golden Sun’
Step seven: Do the relevant exercises from powerpoint (Practice how to describe things in the Kitchen with past tense)
Step eight: Describe the pictures of clean kitchens with correct words and sentences. Make an example to students how to write a diary with past tense. E.g. Yesterday, the cupboard was messy, it wasn’t in order…
Homework:
Write a short story about the party with past tense.
