Getting paid to talk about the World Cup is a great job. I’m not a football commentator, though ― just an English teacher in Japan.
I came to Japan two years ago, and didn’t think I would stay, but Japan has that effect on you. People often end up living here longer than they planned. I think it’s best to teach in a bigger city where there are other foreigners to mix with, rather than a small town where English teachers often complain of feeling like a goldfish in a bowl. Many people choose to live in Tokyo, of course, which is good for the nightlife factor. But I’d say that for general quality of living, cities of neither too large nor too small, like Sapporo札幌[日本北海道西部城市] where I live, are better choices.
I teach English privately, which means I’m my own boss. If you want to devote yourself to private teaching, it’s well worth doing a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language,作为外语的英语教学) course first, because your lessons will be much better for it. The problem with private teaching is finding students; it took me a year to build up a full schedule of private lessons, so I started out teaching in schools part-time.
Most of my foreign friends here work full-time for big English conversation schools. The salary is fine to live on, but whether you can save money depends on how much going out and traveling you do here.
The schools are reluctant to take time off ― even teachers with tickets for the England –Argentina game had trouble getting the day off.
From the passage we know in Japan the writer likes to live in __________.
A: Tokyo B: small town C: a city of middle size D: a big city
According to the writer, one had better __________ first to do private teaching better.
A: take a TEFL course B: decide his or her own lessons
C: find students D: build up a full schedule
The underlined sentence in the second paragraph implies that __________.
A: there are many foreigners in Japan
B: Japan is good for nightlife
C: they can teach English privately in Japan
D: Japan has something more attractive than expected
The underlined word “reluctant” in the passage may probably mean __________.
A: kind B: unwilling C: free D: careless

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
Last week I visited one of my old neighborhoods in Washington D.C. I had not been there for twenty years and as I walked along the street, my mind was flooded by memories of the past. I saw the old apartment building where I had lived and the playground where I had played. As I viewed these once familiar surroundings, images of myself as a child there came to mind. However, what I saw and what I remembered were not the same. I sadly realized that the best memories are those left untouched.
My old apartment building, as I remember, was bright and alive. It was more than just a place to live. It was a movie house, a space station, or whatever my young mind could imagine. I would steal away with my friends and play in the basement. This was always exciting because it was so cool and dark, and there were so many things there to hide among. There was a small river in the back of the building. We would go there to lie in the shade of trees and enjoy ourselves.
However, what I saw was completely different. The apartment building was now in disrepair. What was once more than a place to live looked hardly worth living in. The windows were all broken. The once clean walls were covered with dirty marks. The river was hardly recognizable. The water was polluted and the trees and flowers were all dead. The once sweet smelling river now smelled terrible. It was really heartbreaking to see all this.
I do not regret having seen my old neighborhood. However, I do not think my innocent childhood memories can ever be the same. I suppose it is true when they say, “You can never go home again.”
In the first two paragraphs of the passage the writer tries to tell us that ______.
A: he had lived in Washington D.C. for twenty years
B: he was very imaginative when he was a child
C: he had had fond memories of his old neighborhood.
D: he had come from a very poor neighborhood
The writer, as a child, was very fond of playing in the basement because ______.
A: it was bright and alive
B: it contained a movie house and a space station
C: it was ideal for playing hide-and-seek
D: it was surrounded by trees and flowers
How did the writer feel when he visited his old neighborhood in Washington D.C.?
A: Greatly surprised.
B: Very regretful
C: Quite excited.
D: Very sad
On his visit to his hometown, the writer found the old apartment building ______.
A: seemed unfit to live in
B: had been repaired
C: could hardly be recognized
D: looked dirty and smelt horrible
“You can never go home again” in the last sentence of this passage means that ______.
A: one should never revisit his hometown after many years of absence
B: one will never find his hometown the same as it was in his childhood memory
C: a visit to one’s hometown will bring back one’s fond memories of home
D: a visit to one’s hometown will bring back many sad memories

The accident took place on Sunday, the 25th of June. On that particular day, a south wind had been gusting(劲吹) on and off all morning. It was not strong enough to cause us any concern, so we carried on with our daily work, not suspecting what was about to happen.
The storm gave us very little warning. Black clouds loomed over the distant horizon so suddenly that we were taken by surprise. Even then, we were not really worried, as the clouds seemed to be moving over our house and towards the distant mountains. Then, just as the clouds had moved inland, the windows suddenly swung around in a full circle and we were facing a major storm.
Instantly, we were busily preparing for the worst. The whole family had experienced such a storm before and everyone remembered the damage it had caused to stock and crops. There was very little we could do about the crops. But we needed to protect the animals in case the river flooded again. My older brother called his sheep-dog and began driving our small flock of sheep to higher ground above the river. If the river flooded, they should be safe there.
In the meantime, my father was mending a shed roof that had partly fallen down after many years of fine service. If the tin flew off, it could damage the house. my younger brother began hurriedly carrying firewood under the shelter. My job was to help Mum board up the windows. If the storm developed into a cyclone, the boards would protect the glass.
The storm raged for four hours, pouring more rain on us than we had seen in the last five years. As expected, the river broke its banks and came slowly up towards the house and the stock.
Then, just as we were beginning to lose hope, the storm stopped as suddenly as it had begun. The animals were safe, and the roof was still nailed on. “All’s well that ends well,” said my mother.

The coyote, that clever animal of wide-open spaces, has come to the nation’s capital. In fact, coyotes have spread to every corner of the United States, changing their behaviors to fit new environments and causing researchers to deal with a troublesome new kind of creature: the city coyote.
The coyote originally lived in the middle of the continent. One of its most obvious characters is its smartness, which has made the animal a notorious臭名远扬的, 声名狼藉的pest有害动[植]物, 毒虫, 害人虫. Hunters trapped, shot and poisoned more than a million coyotes in the 1900s. It’s still one of America’s most hunted animals. Yet the coyote has survived. How has the coyote shown this extraordinary ability? “I guess if you wanted to use one word, it’d be ‘plasticity’ 粘性; 塑性, 可塑性; 柔顺性,” says Eric Gese, an expert at Utah State University. Coyotes can live alone, in pairs, or in large packs like wolves; hunt at night or during the day, occupy a small region or an area up to 40 square miles; and live on all sorts of food, from lizards and shoes, to ants and melons.
Unbelievably people helped coyotes increase when they killed most of the wolves in the United States. The spreading of coyotes into city areas, though, is recent. They travel at night, crossing sidewalks and bridges, running along roads and ducking into culverts(涵洞)and underpasses. No one knows why coyotes are moving into cities, but experts explain that cleverer, more human-tolerant不怕人的 coyotes are teaching urban survival skills to new generations.
Occasionally, coyotes might attack human beings. There have been about 160 attacks on people in recent years. Therefore, people have been consistently told not to feed coyotes or leave pet food unsecured. That, plus a large trapping program in the neighborhood, has cut down on the coyote population.
The underlined word “plasticity” in Paragraph 2 refers to __________.
A: the ability to fit the environment B: notorious smartness
C: hunting ability D: being human-tolerant
The aim of the passage is to __________.
A: tell people how to fight against coyotes B: tell us why the coyote is the most hunted animal
C: supply the reason why the coyote is a kind of notorious pest
D: explain how the coyote has spread to and survived in cities
According to the passage, coyotes __________.
A: originally lived in the west of the continent
B: sleep during the day but look for food at night.
C: are teaching survival skills to their younger generations
D: suffered a population decrease because people killed wolves
According to the passage, to cut down on the coyote population, people are advised to _____.
A: leave pet food secured B: keep coyotes in small regions
C: force coyotes to live alone D: avoid using trapping programs

The survey about childhood in the Third World shows that the struggle for survival is long and hard. But in the rich world, children can 1 from a different kind of poverty ― of the spirit. 2 , one Western country alone now sees 14,000 attempted suicides every year by children under 15, and one child 3 five needs psychiatric advice.
There are many good things about 4 in the Third World. Take the close and constant relation between children and their parents, relatives and neighbors for example. In the West, the very nature of work puts distance between 5 and children. But in most Third World villages mother and father do not go miles away each day to work in offices. 6 , the child sees mother and father, relations and neighbors working 7 and often shares in that work.
A child 8 in this way learns his or her role through joining in the community’s 9 : helping to dig or build, look after animals or babies ― rather than 10 playing with water and sand in kindergarten, keeping pets 11 playing with dolls.
These children may grow up with a less oppressive sense of space and time than the 12 children. Their sense of days and time has a lot to do with the change of seasons and positions of the sun or the moon in the sky. Children in the rich world, 13 , are provided with a watch as one of the 14 signs of growing up, so that they can 15 along with their parents about being late for school times, meal times, bed times, the times of TV shows …
Third World children do not usually 16 to stay indoors, still less in highrise apartments. Instead of dangerous roads, “keep off the grass” signs and “don’t speak to strangers”, there is often a sense of 17 to study and play. Parents can see their children outside rather than observe them 18 from ten floors up.
19 , twelve million children under five still die every year through hunger and disease. But childhood in the Third World is not all 20 .

Scientific experiments can sometimes go wrong and when they do the results may range from the disastrous to the troubling. One such experiment took place in South America about fifty years ago. Whether its final consequences will cause serious damage or nothing more than a small trouble still remains to be seen.
The story began in 1956 when an American scientist working in Brazil decided to solve the problem of increasing the productivity of that country’s bees. He imported a very active type of African bee from Tanzania and mated(交配) it with the more easy-going native variety to produce a new kind of bees. The new bees worked harder and produced twice as much honey. It seemed that Professor Kerr, for that was the scientist’s name, had a total success on his hands.
Then things began to go wrong. For some reason as yet unseen, but perhaps as a result of something in their environment, the new bees began to develop extremely attacking personalities. They became bad-tempered and easy to be angry, attacked the native bees and drove them from their living places.
But worse was to follow. Having taken over the countryside, the new bees, with their dangerous stings, began to attack is neighbors ― cats, dogs, horses, chickens and finally man himself. A long period of terror began that has so far killed a great number of animals and about 150 human beings.
This would have been bad enough if the bees had stayed in Brazil. But now they are on the move, heading northwards in countless millions towards Central and North America, and moving at the alarming speed of 200 miles a year. The countries that lie in their path are naturally worried because it looks as if nothing can be done to stop them.
The results of the South American experiment __________.
A: are not important B: are not yet certain
C: have proved to be wrong D: have caused a serious trouble
The experiment mentioned in this passage was designed to __________.
A: make African bees less active B: increase the number of bees in Brazil
C: increase the amount of honey in Brazil D: make Brazilian bees more easygoing
Which of the following may be the cause of the new bees’ attacking personalities?
A: Their bad temper. B: Their living environment.
C: Their hard work. D: Their production of honey.
The last paragraph implies that __________.
A: the bees prefer to live in Brazil B: the bees must be stopped from moving north
C: the bees may bring about trouble in more countries
D: the bees have been driven to Central and North America

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
Eat your vegetables. Wash your hands. Always say “please” and “thank you”. We are full of advice for our children, but when it comes to money, we often have little to say. As a result, our children may grow up with clean hands and good manners, but without any idea how to manage their money.
Here are some basics that will help guide them their entire lives:
Show them the future. If your 13-year-old girl were to save $ 100 every month, by the time she’s 65, she would have $ 980,983 !
Be careful of credit. Credit cards can help you buy necessary things and build a credit history but they must be used responsibly, which means paying off your debt in time. Explain to your children that when you buy something using a credit card, you can easily end up paying two or three times what you would have paid if you used cash.
Teach patience. Suppose your child wants a new bicycle that costs $ 150. Rather than paying the cash, give him some regular pocket money and explain that by putting aside, say, $ 15 each week, he will be able to buy it for himself in only ten weeks.
Provide incentive. Tell your children the importance of saving. “For every dollar he or she agrees to save and invest rather than spend, you agree to add another dollar to the pot,” says Cathy Pareto, expert in money planning.
Explain your values. Values and money are deeply intertwined, says Eilleen Gallo, co-author of The Financially Intelligent Parent. When your child demands that you buy something, explain why you really don’t want to buy it. You might say, “I’d rather save that money for your education,” advises Gallo. Every time you spend or don’t spend money you have a chance to share your values.
The writer gives some basics to help ______ in a proper way.
A: parents teach their children how to deal with money
B: children follow their parents’ instructions
C: children manage their money
D: parents save their money
The writer thinks that if a child wants to buy something, his parents should ______.
A: give him some regular pocket money
B: encourage him to put money away for it
C: explain to him the importance of investment
D: tell him to save some money by using a credit card
The underlined word “incentive” in paragraph 6 means ______.
A: honor B: excitement C: excited D: encouragement
When it comes to credit card, the author holds that ______.
A: it is better to buy something with credit card than with cash.
B: it is better to buy something by neither credit card nor cash.
C: credit card is money-saving rather than money-wasting.
D: it may reflect one’s attitude towards responsibility when used
What leads the writer to write this article?
A: Parents want to know how to educate their children.
B: He wants to share his good ideas about money matters.
C: He thinks money management the most important for children.
D: Parents care little about their children’s management of money.

When a Swedish瑞典的 ship that sank in 1628 was recovered from the port of Stockholm [?????????]斯德哥尔摩(瑞典首都), historians and scientists were overjoyed with the chance to examine the remains残余, 遗迹, 遗体of the past. The ship construction showed how ships were built and operated during the seventeenth century. In this way, artifacts史前古器物, objects made by human beings, provided a picture of daily life almost 400 years ago.
Underwater archaeology ― the study of ships, aircraft and human settlements that have sunk under large bodies of water ― is really a product of the last 50 years. The rapid growth of this new area of study has occurred because of the invention of better diving equipment. Besides the Swedish ship wreck, underwater archaeologists have made more exciting discoveries such as the 5000-year-old boats in the Mediterranean Sea.
Underwater archaeology can provide facts about the past. In ancient ports all over the world are ships sunken in the past 6,000 years. There are also sunken settlements in seas and lakes telling of people’s way of life and their systems of trade in ancient times. Underwater archaeologists want to study these objects to add to the world’s knowledge of history, but they have to fight two enemies. One enemy is treasure hunters who dive for ancient artifacts that they can sell to collectors. Once sold, these objects are lost to experts. The second enemy is dredging machines挖掘机 often used to repair ports. These machines destroy wrecks and artifacts or bury them deeper under sand and mud. By teaching the public about the importance of underwater “museums” of the past, archaeologists are hoping to get support for laws to protect underwater treasures.
What purpose does Paragraph 1 serve in the passage?
A: To provide background information of the topic.
B: To attract readers’ attention to the topic.
C: To use an example to support the topic.
D: To offer basic knowledge of the topic.
The aim of underwater archaeology is to __________.
A: exploit water bodies B: search for underwater life
C: study underwater artifacts D: examine underwater environment
Underwater archaeologists are worried because __________.
A: sea hunters have better diving equipment
B: their knowledge of world history is limited
C: dredging machines cause damage to the ports
D: sold artifacts can hardly be regained for research
What is the main purpose of the passage?
A: To introduce a young branch of learning.
B: To discuss the scientists’ problems.
C: To explain people’s way of life in the past.
D: To describe the sunken ships.

I was the middle child of three, but there was a gap of five years on either side, and I hardly saw my father before I was eight. For this and other reasons I was somewhat lonely. I had the lonely child’s habit of making up stories and holding conversation with imaginary persons and I think from the very start my literary ambitions were mixed up with the feeling of being isolated and undervalued. I knew that I had a natural ability with words and a power of facing unpleasant facts, and I felt that this created a sort of private world in which I could get my own back for my failure in everyday life.
However, the quantity of serious writing which I produced all through my childhood would not add up to half a dozen pages. I wrote my first poem at the age of four or five, my mother taking it down to dictation. I cannot remember anything about it except that it was about a tiger and the tiger had “chair-like teeth” ― a good enough expression. At eleven, when the war of 1914 – 18 broke out, I wrote a poem which was printed in the local newspaper, as was another, two years later, on the death of Kitchener. From time to time, when I was a bit older, I wrote bad and usually unfinished “nature poems”. I also, about twice, attempted a short story which was a failure. That was the total of the would-be serious work that I actually set down on paper during all those years.
The underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refers to __________.
A: the quantity of serious writing B: the writer’s first poem
C: the writer’s childhood D: the tiger in the poem

A: He was least favored in his family.
B: He had much difficulty in taking with others.
C: He had an unhappy childhood for lack of care.
D: His loneliness resulted in his interest in writing.

People fell in love with Elizabeth Taylor in 1944, when she starred in National Velvet ― the story of Velvet Brown, a young girl who wins first place in a famous horse race. At first, the producers of the movie told Taylor that she was too small to play the part of Velvet. However, they waited for her for a few months as she exercised and trained ― and added three inches to her height in four months! Her acting in National Velvet is still considered the best by a child actress.
Elizabeth Taylor was born in London in 1932, her parents, both Americans, had moved there for business reasons. When World War Ⅱ started, the Taylors moved to Beverly Hills, California, and there Elizabeth started acting in movies. After her success as a child star, Taylor bad no trouble moving into adult roles and won twice for Best Actress: Butter Field 8 (1960) and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf? (1966).
Taylor’s fame and popularity gave her a lot of power with the movie industry, so she was able to demand very high pay for her movies. In 1963, she received $ 1 million for her part in Cleopatra ― the highest pay received by any star up to that time.
Elizabeth Taylor is a legend of our time. Like Velvet Brown in National Velvet, she has been lucky: she has beauty, fame and wealth. But she is also a hard worker. Taylor seldom acts in movies any more. Instead, she puts her time and efforts into her businesses, and into helping others ― several years ago, she founded an organization that has raised more than $ 40 million for research and education.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
If you have been joining in chat room conversations, or trading email with web pals, you have become one of the millions who write in a particularly short form of English.
And you’re got a sense of humor about short forms like SOHF (= sense of humor failure) to describe Internet newcomers who don’t understand you.
Across the globe, every night teenagers and their elders are “talking” on line, many of them all talking at the same time.
It’s fast: try talking to six people at once. It’s brief: three or four words per exchange. It takes wit, concentration and fingers.
And it requires tremendous linguistic economy. There’s neither time now space for explanations. Why consume precious key-strokes telling six friends you have to leave for a moment to take care of your little brother when BRB (= be right back) will do?
Want to enter a conversation? Just type A/S/L, the nearly universal request to know your pal’s age, sex and location. You might get 15/M/NY as a response from your pal.
If something makes you laugh, say you are OTF (= on the floor), or LOL (= laughing out loud), or combing the two into ROTFL (=rolling on the floor laughing).
And when it is time to get back to work or go to bed, you type GTG (Got to go) or TTYL (=talk to you later).
People want to write as fast as possible, and they want to get their ideas across as quickly as they can. Capital letters are left in the dust, except when expressing emotion, as it takes, more time to hold down the “shift” key and capitals. Punctuation is going, too.
Many people talk on the Internet ______.
A: by sending short emails B: by using a peculiar short form of English
C: by using peculiar English words and expressions D: in a funny way
In order to talk to several people at the same time on the Internet ______.
A: you have to speak fast and fluently
B: you should speak with wit and humor
C: you have to express your ideas in a brief way
D: one should pay much attention to the accuracy of words
If you get 17/F/NY as an answer to you’re A/S/L, it means ______.
A: the person on the other end is 17 from New York and he is fine
B: you are talking to a girl who is 17 and lives in New York
C: you are talking to 17 girls who are from New York
D: the person who you are talking to is a 17-foot tall New York girl
To save time on the Internet ______.
A: some people leave their letters in the dustbin
B: some people never use “shift” in their writing
C: some people leave the capital and punctuation
D: people seldom use capital letters or punctuation

If you are lost in the mountains, stay calm in the face of darkness, loneliness, and the unknown. It will greatly increase your chances of survival. Many people think that preparing necessary equipment and knowing how to use it are very important, but actually eighty percent of mountain survival is your reaction to fear.
Find a hiding place.
Unnecessary labor will make you sweat and make you cold. Find a hiding place around you before trying to start your own construction. If you are in a snow-covered area, you may be able to dig a cave in deep snow for protection from the wind. You should try to hide yourself in the middle of the mountain if possible. Stay out of the valleys ― cold air falls, and valley floor can be the coldest area on the mountain.
Signal rescuers for help.
The best time to signal rescuers is during the day. Signal for help from the highest point possible ― it will be easier for rescuers to see you, and any sound you make will travel farther. If you take a box of matches and a space blanket (a special blanket for traveling), build three smoky fires and put your blanket ― gold side facing out ― on the ground.
Do not walk away.
It will make finding you more difficult, as search teams will be trying to follow your path and may miss you if you have gone off in a different direction. Searchers often end up finding a car with no one in it.
If you get frostbite(冻伤), do not rewarm the affected area until you’re out of danger.
You can walk on frostbitten feet, but once you warm the area and can feel the pain, you will not want to walk anywhere. Try to protect the frostbitten area and keep it dry until you are rescued.

Eyes are the windows of the soul. When you speak to people, looking at their eyes helps you communicate successfully. If you look at other people’s eyes a lot when you talk, people will think that you are open, friendly, self-confident, natural and sincere. If you avoid eye contact with people, they will think that you are cold and defensive; they will think you don’t really care about them or the conversation.
In an ordinary conversation between two people we spend about a third of the time looking at each other. The eye contact follows a pattern, it is like a dance. When begin to speak to the other persons we look at them. When we are sure they are listening, we look away. Occasionally, we look at them to see if they are still listening and understanding or agreeing etc. then, when we finish speaking we look at them again. The listener looks at the speaker most of the time. If we don’t follow this pattern it will communicate a special meaning!
Eye contact is different in different countries. Southern Europeans look at each other more than Northern Europeans and Americans. An Italian might think that an Englishman is cold and an Englishman might think that an Italian is very friendly! And it may not be true!

Nervous suspects locked up in Britain’s newest police station may feel relieved by a pleasant yellow color on the door. If they are close to confessing a crime, the blue on the wall might tip the balance.
Gwent Police have abandoned colors such as greys and browns of the 20th-century police cell and have used color psychology to decorate them.
Ystrad Mynach station, which recently opened at a cost of £ 5 million, has four cells with glass doors for prisoners who suffer from claustrophobia(幽闭恐怖症). Designers have painted the frames yellow, which researchers say is a calming color. Other cells contain a royal blue line because psychologists believe that the color is likely to encourage truthfulness.
The station has 31 cells, including 12 with a “live scan” system for drunken or disturbed prisoners, which detects the rise and fall of their chest. An alarm alerts officers if a prisoner’s breathing stops and carries on ringing until the door is opened.
Designers and psychologists have worked for years on color. Blue is said to suggest trust, efficiency, duty, logic, coolness, thinking and calm. It also suggests coldness and unfriendliness. It is thought that strong blues will stimulate clear thought and lighter, soft colors will calm the mind and aid concentration.
Yellow is linked with confidence, self-respect and friendliness. Get the color wrong and it could cause fear, depression and anxiety, but the right tallow can lift spirits and self-respect.
Ingrid Collins, a psychologist who specializes in the effects of color, said that color was an “energy force”. She said: “Blue does enhance communication but I am not sure it would enhance truthful communication.”
Yellow, she said, affected the mind. Red, on the other hand, should never be considered because it could increase aggression. Mrs. Collins praised the designers for using colors in the cells. Gwent is not the first British force to experiment with color to calm down or persuade prisoners to co-operate. In the 1990s Strathclyde Police used pink in cells based on research carried out by the US Navy.
The expression “tip the balance” in paragraph 1 probably indicates that the blue might __________.
A: let suspects keep their balance
B: help suspects to confess their crimes
C: make suspects cold and unfriendly in law court
D: enable suspects to change their attitudes to colors
Which of the following colors should NOT be used in cells according to the passage?
A: Pink. B: Yellow. C: Blue. D: Red.
Which of the following helps alert officers if someone stops breathing?
A: Scanning equipment. B: Royal blue lines. C: Glass doors. D: Yellow frames.
The passage is mainly concerned with _________
A: the relationship between colors and psychology
B: a comparison of Different functions of colors
C: the use of colors in cells to affect criminals’ psychology
D: scientific ways to help criminals reform themselves in prison

Have you ever dreamed of having a fashionable watch of great value?
A small watchmaker in Switzerland in 1922 designed the first automatic watch to show the day, month, and date. Only seven of these splendid watches were ever made and these watches were almost lost to history. Today, it is so hard to get an original watch that some watch historians are even willing to offer $200,000 for one.
These watches attracted a lot of people for their splendid color, fashionable style, and new uses in the 1920s. The owners of the watches were admired and set apart from the crowd. Because the number of the original watches is very limited, owning such a watch will make you feel very special.
Today, you are offered the same kind of watch with improvement. It has a 24-jewel mechanical movement, the kind desired by watch collectors. The watchmaker has made the movement of the watch much more modern with an automatic rotor(上弦装置)so that the watch never needs to be wound by hand. The watch comes in a very beautiful case with a crocodile design on it. To get a watch in such a perfect design means to get a chance to know a piece of watch-making history and to wear such a watch will show your personal taste and social position.
You can get the watch either in person or by mail at an affordable price. You will also receive good service from the watch seller. If you are not satisfied with the watch after you get it, you may simply return it within 30 days. Don’t miss the chance to realize your dream.
The original automatic watches are valuable because __________.

It’s 2035. You have a job, a family and you’re about 40 years old! Welcome to your future life.
Getting ready for work, you pause in front of the mirror. “Turn red,” you say. Your shirt changes from sky blue to deep red. Tiny preprogrammed electronics are rearranged in your shirt to change its color. Looking into the mirror, you find it hard to believe you’re 40. You look much younger. With amazing advances in medicine, people in your generation may live to be 150 years old. You’re not even middle-aged!
As you go into the kitchen and prepare to pour your breakfast cereal into a bowl, you hear, “To lose weight, you shouldn’t eat that,” from your shoes. They read the tiny electronic code on the cereal box to find out the nutrition details. You decide to listen to your shoes. “Kitchen, what can I have for breakfast?” A list of possible foods appears on the counter as the kitchen cheeks its food supplies.
“Ready for your trip to space” you ask your son and daughter. In 2005 only specially trained astronaut went into space ― and very few of them. Today anyone can go to space for day trips or longer vacations. Your best friend even works in space. Handing your children three strawberries each, you add, “The doctor said you need these for space travel.” Thanks to medical advances, vaccination shots are a thing of the past. Ordinary foods contain specific vaccines. With the berries in their mouths, the kids head for the front door.
It’s time for you to go to work. Your car checks your fingerprints and unlocks the doors. “My office. Autopilot,” you command. Your car drives itself down the road and moves smoothly into traffic on the highway. You sit back and unroll your e-newspaper. The latest news downloads and fills the viewer. Looking through the pages, you watch the news as video film rather than read it.
What changes the color of your shirt?
A: The mirror. B: The shirt itself. C: The counter. D: The medicine.
How do the shoes know that you shouldn’t eat the breakfast cereal?
A: By pouring the breakfast into a bowl. B: By listening to the doctor’s advice.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
Short and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. “Football, tennis, cricket ― anything with a round ball, I was useless,” he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the object of jokes in school gym classes in England’s rural Devonshire.
It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first the teen went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to cycle along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed, strength and endurance. At age 18, he ran his first marathon.
The following year, he met John Ridgway, who became famous in 1960s for rowing an open boat across the Atlantic Ocean. Saunders was hired as an instructor at Ridgway’s School of Adventure in Scotland, where he learned about the older man’s cold-water exploits. Intrigued, Saunders read all he could about Arctic explorers and North Pole expeditions, then decided that this would be his future.
Journeys to the Pole aren’t the usual holidays for British country boys, and many people dismissed his dream as fantasy. “John Ridgway was one of the few who didn’t say, ‘You’re completely crazy.’” Saunders says.
In 2001, after becoming a skilled skier, Saunders started his first long-distance expedition toward the North Pole. He suffered frostbite, had a close encounter with a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit.
Saunders has since become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he’s skied more of the Arctic by himself than any other Briton. His old playmates would not believe the transformation.
This October, Saunders, 27, heads south to explore from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back, and 1,800-mile journey that has never been completed on skis.
The turning point in Saunders’ life came when __________.
A: he started to play ball games B: he got a mountain bike at age 15
C: he ran his first marathon at age 18 D: he started to receive Ridgway’s training
We can learn from the text that Ridgway __________.
A: dismissed Saunders’ dream as fantasy B: built up his body together with Saunders
C: hired Saunders for his cold-water experience D: won his fame for his voyage across the Atlantic
What do we know about Saunders?
A: He once worked at a school in Scotland. B: He followed Ridgway to explore the North Pole.
C: He was chosen for the school sports team as a kid. D: He was the first Britain to ski alone to the North Pole
The underlined word “Intrigued” in the third paragraph probably means __________.
A: Excited B: Convinced C: Delighted D: Fascinated
It can be inferred that Saunders’ journey to the North Pole __________.
A: was accompanied by his old playmates B: set a record in the North Pole expedition
C: was supported by other Arctic explorers D: made him well-known in the 1960s

When a storm is coming, most people leave the area as quickly as possible and head for safety. But there are a few people who will get into their cars and go straight for the center of the storm. These people are willing to risk being killed by floods or 100-kilometer-an-hour winds for the excitement of watching the storm close up.
“Storm chasing” is becoming an increasingly popular hobby, especially in the Midwest of the United States, where there are frequent storms between March and July. A storm chaser begins the day by checking the Internet for the latest weather reports, and then drives up to 1,000 kilometers to where the storm will be and waits for it to develop.
Although anyone can do it, storm chasing is extremely dangerous. The power of a big storm can throw a cow into the air or destroy a whole house in seconds. Storm chasers are also often hurt in accidents caused by driving in a heavy rain. If you are beginner, it is much safer to join a group for storm-chasing vacations during the storm season.
Even then, storm chasing is not all adventure and excitement. “Storm chasing is 95% driving,” says Daniel Lynch, who spends most of his summer storm-chasing. “Sometimes you can sit around for hours waiting for something to happen, and all you get is blue sky and a few light showers.”
However, for storm chasers, it is all worth it. “When you get close to a storm, it is the most exciting sight you will ever see in your life,” says Jasper Morley. “Every storm is an example of the power of nature. It is the greatest show on Earth.”
For storm chasing, the first thing storm chasers do is to __________.
A: head straight for the center of the storm
B: get into the car for safety
C: wait patiently for the storm to develop
D: collect information about a coming storm
Beginners of storm chasing are advised __________.
A: not to drive in a heavy rain B: to do it in an organized way
C: not to get too close to a storm D: to spend more time on it in summer
By saying “it is all worth it” in the last paragraph, the author means that __________.
A: storm chasing costs a lot of money B: storm chasing is worth hours of waiting
C: efforts in storm chasing are well paid D: a storm presents the greatest show on Earth
What can we learn from the text?
A: Sometimes storm chasers get nothing but disappointment.
B: Many storm chasers get killed in the storms.
C: Storm chasing is becoming popular around the world.
D: Storm chasing is only fit young people.

第三部分:阅读理解(共20题;每小题2分,共40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
For centuries, the only form of written correspondence was the letter. Letters were, and are, sent by some form of postal service, the history of which goes back a long way. Indeed, the Egyptians began sending letters from about 2000 BC, as did the Chinese a thousand years later.
Of course, modern postal services now are much more developed and faster, depending as they do on cars and planes for delivery. Yet they are still too slow for some people to send urgent documents and letters.
The invention of the fax machine increased the speed of delivering documents even more. When you send a fax, you are sending a copy of a piece of correspondence to someone by telephone service. It was not until the early 1980s that such a service was developed enough for businesses to be able to fax documents to each other.
The fax service is still very much in use when copies of documents require to be sent, but, as a way of fast correspondence, it has been largely taken the place of by email. Email is used to describe messages sent from one computer user to another.
There are advantages and disadvantages with emails. If you send someone an email, then he will receive it extremely quickly. Normal postal services are rather slow as far as speed of delivery is concerned.
However, if you write something by email, which you might later regret, and send it immediately, there is no chance for second thoughts. At least, if you are posting a letter you have to address and seal the envelope and take it to the post box. There is plenty of time to change your mind. The message is think before you email!
We can learn from the text that _________.
A: email is less popular than the fax service
B: the postal service has over the years become faster
C: the postal service has over the years become slower
D: the fax service has a history as long as the postal service does
It can be inferred from the text that __________.
A: the fax service had been fully developed by the 1980s
B: letters have been used in China for about 1,000 years
C: the fax machine was invented after the 1980s
D: letters have been used in Egypt for about 2,000 years
In the paragraph, the writer mentions “think before you email” to show that __________.
A: you may regret if you don’t seal your envelope
B: you may regret before you send something by email
C: you’d better not send your email in a hurry
D: you need plenty of time to send an email
The text mainly deals with __________.
A: the progress in correspondence B: the advantage of fax machines
C: the advantage of emails D: the invention of fax machines
