I’m confused (困惑)these days. We are taught at home and at school that using violence (暴力) is the least civilized (文明的) way to solve problems. For example, last week I thought about hitting my friend for winning a beautiful shell while we were playing at the beach. I talked with him instead and we came to an agreement. If two adults had a disagreement, and if they used violence towards each other in order to win, is it all right?
When two countries disagree, they often fight a war. Why is using violence not okay at home, at school, or in your country but okay between countries? So many people have been killed because of wars, not only soldiers but ordinary people, even small children and babies. And refugees (难民) exist, too.
A war is a great violence, like two people fighting over a shell, just much bigger. Adults say they are fighting wars in order to solve problems and make peace. But can you really “make peace” by killing so many people? I don’t think bombs (炸弹) can reach people’s hearts and change them. Bombs can’t create love and caring, and that’s what we need in the world. Why do adults use violence so quickly? Why can’t they use their wisdom (智慧) and talk it over?
Adults might say that things are not that easy. But they are the ones that teach us to be kind, not to hurt people, and not to kill. Why don’t they act as what they say?
—A page from a 12-tear-old boy, Joshua’s diary.

A. Love and care for each other. B. Don’t use violence so quickly.
C. Stop using bombs in wars. D. Don’t hurt or kill people in wars.

A. learn from children B. be children’s models
C. be kind to children D. teach children how to solve problems

Australia, the last continent, was discovered by ships belonging to some European nations in the seventeenth century. These nations were less interested in changing it into a colony (殖民地) than in exploring it. As in the early history of the United States, it was the English who set up the settlements (新拓居地) in Australia. The history and the geography of these two British colonies have some other things in common as well.
Australia and the United States are about the same in size, and their western lands are both not rich in soil. It was the eastern coast of Australia and America that the English first settled, and both colonies soon began to develop towards the west. However, this westward movement took place more because the English were searching for better land than because the population was increasing. Settlements of the western part of both countries developed quickly after gold was discovered in America in 1849 and in Australia two years later.
Although the development of these two countries has a lot in common, there are some striking differences as well. The United States gained its independence from England by revolution (革命) while Australia won its independence without having to go to war. Australia, unlike the United States, was firstly turned into a colony by English prisoners and its economic development was in wheat growing and sheep raising. By 1922, for example, Australia had fifteen times more sheep than it had people, or almost half as many sheep as there are people today in the United States. Yet, in spite of these and other main differences, Australia and the United States have more in common with each other than either one has with most of the rest of the world.
( )41. Who turned Australia into a colony?
A. Britain. B. Several European countries.
C. The United States of America. D, None of the above.
( )42. In the early history of America and Australia, both colonies developed towards the west firstly for the reason that __________.
A. the population was increasing rapidly in the east
B. the English thought there might be richer land there
C. gold was discovered there
D. fewer people lived there
( )43. In the early 1920s, ______.
A. the population in Australia was greater than that of United States
B. there were more sheep in Australia than in the United States
C. Australia had one fifteenth as many people as sheep
D. the United States had twice as many sheep as people
( )44. Australia, unlike the United States, ________.
A. won its independence by peaceful means
B. did not discover gold until the late 1840s
C. was the last and biggest continent to be discovered
D. was not rich in gold in its western part
( )45. The last sentence in the last paragraph “…Australia and the United States have more in common with each other than either one has with most of the rest of the world” means “_______”.
A. The United States and Australia do not have any main differences
B. The United States and Australia have much more in common than they have with other countries
C. The United States and Australia have nothing in common with the rest of the world
D. In common with the rest of the world, the United States and Australia have a lot of differences

In almost every big university in the United States, football is a favorite sport. American football is different. Players sometimes kick(踢)the ball that is oval (not round), but they also throw the ball with their hands and run with it. They try to take it to the other end of the field. They have four chances to move the ball ten yards (长度单位,码). They can carry it or they can throw it. If they move the ball ten yards, they can try to move it another ten yards. If they move it to the end of the field, they receive six points (点,分). It is difficult to move the ball. Eleven men on the other team try to stop the man with the ball. If he does not move the ball ten yards, his team kicks the ball to the other team.
Each university wants its own team to win. Many, many people come to watch. They all shout for their favorite team. Young men and women come on the field to help the people shout more. They dance and jump while they shout.
Each team plays ten or eleven games each season. The season begins in September and ends in November. If a team is very good, it may play another game after the season ends. How time flies! It’s more than two years since I became a middle school student. Great changes have taken place in me.
As for my personality, I am able to control my temper though I used to be touchy. And my appearance has changed a lot. I used to have short hair and my eye-sight was good. But now I grow long hair and I am near-sighted, so I wear glasses.
My English learning is not the same as before. Now I listen to the English teacher with concentration and take notes in every class. But I used to talk and play in the class. On weekends, I used to play computer games. But nowadays, I look over my notebook from cover to cover and write my own original sentences using the grammar I was learning. It is these days that help me make fewer mistakes and get better grades.
In a word, I am not what I used to be. And what will I be in the future? Only time will tell me?

A Miracle (奇迹) of Tears
It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were 21 . The rivers were long gone back into the 22 . If we didn’t see some rain soon, we would lose everything. It was on this day that I learned the true lesson of sharing and witnessed (目击) the only miracle I had seen with my own eyes.
I was in the kitchen making lunch when I saw my six-year-old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. Minutes after he disappeared 23 the woods, he came running out again, toward the house.
I went back to making sandwiches, thinking that what he had been doing was completed. Moments later, 24 , he was once again toward the woods. This 25 went on for an hour—walked 26 to the woods, and ran back to the house.
27 I couldn’t take it any longer, so I went out of the house quietly and 28 him on his journey.

“I’m not 34 ,”was all he said.

When I was seven years old, my family created an ant farm. First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box. Then we waited for the ants to arrive.
After the ants were in the glass arm, they started to make tunnels. I was amazed that each one knew exactly what to do. Each had its own job.
On the fifth day a tragedy (悲剧) happened. I put my face so close to the glass farm that I knocked it over. All the tunnels fell down. Although the ants remained alive after their earthquake, one by one they began to die. I was scared as I watched them give up their tunnel-building to carry the bodies to a corner of the farm.
My mother said that the ants were dying of sadness. They simply could not stand that their tunnels were gone.
Although much time has passed, I still think of that ant farm. Mom had hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more.
Over the years, I came to realize the importance of teamwork. Working together, the ants were able to make am amazing world for themselves. I also learned that they should be admired for their hard work.
But there was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently: Adversity(逆境) is natural part of life, and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, we cannot give up when we are sad. We have to realize that if a tunnel is gone, we must build another.
Giving up, I say, is not a good choice.
( )35. What did the writer’s family do for him when he was seven?
A. They built a farm of ants. B. They bought a few ants.
C. They caught a lot of ants. D. They found an ant city.
( )36. Which statement is TRUE according to the passage?
The writer broke the glass box because it made his face dirty.
The ants died one by one because the tunnels were destroyed.
Unlike people, teamwork is not so important for the ants.
Giving up is a good way when meet trouble.
( )37. What did the writer come to realize a few years later?
Working together is useless. B. Teamwork is important.
C. He can’t accept adversity. D. working alone is amazing.
( )38. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Ants Fear Adversity B. My Family and Ants
C. Giving Up in Adversity D. A Good Lesson from Ants

Imagine this: a television screen the size and thickness of a piece of paper. You carry it around in your pocket and take it out when you want to watch a show. Imagine a guitar so tiny that you can’t see it with the human eye, but you can hear sound when its strings are pulled.
Nanotechnology(纳米技术)is the science that deals with doing things in a very small way, and it is being studied and developed all over the world. Thousands or even millions of tiny machines can be sent into the human body with specific tasks. For example, they can be designed to find and destroy cancer cells or viruses(病毒). Other machines may stay in the human body for ever to help organs (器官) that are not working properly.
Think of the possibilities in using such tiny machines in surgery. Imagine machines so small you can swallow them in a pill or inject them into your bloodstream through a needle. After you’ve had too many years of junk food, these tiny robots could be sent into your arteries(动脉)to clean them. An intelligent machine in your heart would look around to find the problem and then repair it. If you needed an operation, it would be almost like swallowing the surgeon.
When could all of this happen? Scientists predict that much of this is possible in the next 30 years. Thousands of scientists around the world are working on these micro-machines. Nanotechnology is just around the corner.
( )39. The two examples in the first paragraph are used to _______.
A. introduce the smallest television B. introduce a new kind of guitar
C. introduce the topic of the passage D. show how small the world is
( )40. Nanotechnology _______.
A. will cause an industrial revolution B. deals with things in old ways
C. has studied the whole world D. was developed many years ago
( )41. The tiny machines ___________.
A. are too small to be repaired B. can be put in a human body to kill viruses
C. may not work well in a human body D. can take the place of human organs
( )42. The underlined phrase “around the corner” in the last sentence means ______.
A. far away B. at present C. in the near future D. impossible
C
Most people have had a dog or wanted one as their companion at some time in their lives. If you are thinking of buying a dog, however, you should first decide what sort of companion you need and whether the dog is likely to be happy in the surroundings you can provide. Specialists’ advice is useful to help you choose the most suitable kind of dog. But in part the decision depends on common sense. Different dogs were originally developed to perform specific tasks. So, if you want a dog to protect you or your house, for example, you should choose the one that has the right size and characteristics. You must also be ready to devote a great deal of time to training the dog when it is young and give it the exercise it needs throughout its life, unless you live in the countryside and can let it run freely. Dogs are demanding pets. Cats love the house and so are satisfactory with their place where there is secure, but a dog is loyal to its master and consequently wants him to show proof of his affection. The best time to buy a baby dog is when it is between 6 and 8 weeks old so that it can transfer its love for its mother to its master. There are many advantages of becoming a professional musician. The biggest advantage is being able to do something you love. You will have the chance to travel to many different places and meet a lot of different people. That will open up your eyes.
However, there are also disadvantages of being a professional musician. One of the biggest disadvantages for most musicians is that they don't always have enough money. Most of the time, you will be looking for jobs. Sometimes you won't be able to find a good job. Another disadvantage is the place you live in. If you want to be a musician, you usually have to move to an area that has a lot of jobs, such as New York City. The cost of living in these areas is usually very high. The third disadvantage is that you can't have a stable family life. Different jobs will take a musician to different places, so most musicians are unable to have a regular family.

There are thousands of products of all colors and shapes in a supermarket, making you believe that they are worth a try. How? Packaging is the silent but persuading salesman.
They are on the shelves, and each bottle, can, box, and jar has been carefully designed and measured to speak to the inner self of the consumer(消费者), so that he is buying not only a product but also his belief in life. Scientists have studied consumer behavior recently and found that the look of the package has a great effect on the “quality” of the product and on how well it sells, because “Consumers generally cannot tell between a product and its package. Many products are packages and many packages are products,” as Louis Cheskin, the first social scientist studying consumers' feeling for packaging, noticed.
Colors are one of the best tools in packaging(包装). Studies of eye movements have shown that colors draw human attention quickly. Take V8 for example. For many years, the bright color of tomatoes and carrots on the thin bottle makes you feel that it is very good for your body. And the word “green” today can keep food prices going up.
Shapes are another attraction. Circles often suggest happiness and peacefulness, because these shapes are pleasing to both eye and the heart. That's why the round yellow M signs of McDonald's are inviting to both young and old.
This new consumer response to the colors and shapes of packages reminds producers and sellers that people buy to satisfy both body and soul.
43. According to the passage, ________ seems to be able to persuade a consumer to buy the product.
A. the belief in the product
B. the quality of the product
C. the salesman in the supermarket
D. the pleasing color of the package
44. What does the underlined sentence in Para 2 mean?
A. Many good products are of bad package.
B. Package has great influence on the product.
C. Product and Package are of the same thing.
D. Package is more important than the product itself.
45. If a package or a product is round in shape, it can ________.
A. make people feel relaxed B. bring excitement to the consumers
C. produce a happy and peaceful feeling D. catch the eye movement of the consumers
46. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Package and Product. B. Consumer Response.
C. Colors and Shapes. D. The Inner Self of the Consumer.

Now and then we all get ill. Then we usually go to see a doctor. Doctors know a lot about what makes us ill. They may give us something to take. The medicine often makes us well again.
But sometimes the doctor’s medicine doesn’t work. A sick person does not get well. The pain will not go away. This happened to one man. He was in hospital, but he was not getting well. Then he found a new “doctor” inside himself. This “doctor” was his own sense of humor(幽默感). He saw funny films. He read funny books. And something wonderful happened. Laughing took away his pain. Then he was able to sleep and rest. His own happy feeling helped him to fell well again. He said laughing was his best “medicine”. His doctor thought so, too.
Another man was ill, and he had a terrible pain in his back. The doctors could not stop it from hurting. So the man began to “Picture” his pain. In his head e “drew” a picture of a dog. He imagined it as a real dog. And he made friends with the dog. And his pain went away!
These stories may surprise you. But more and more people are getting well in this way. So visit the “doctor” inside your own head and you can stay happy and well.

At present, he is keen on basketball. As for study, he used to be weak in English. Surprisingly, he is good at English now. The great change is due to the good ways to learn it. He knows that you can’t do anything with English unless you master the words very well, and he makes vocabulary lists to help memorize the words. In order to improve his listening and speaking, he also watches English videos. It makes a big difference to his grades. In addition, he is convinced that “Practice makes perfect” and he practices again and again. So, as you can see, it is because he took these effective steps that he has made such progress.

In the United States, when you become rich you want people to know about it. And even if you do not become very rich you want people to think that you are. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors.
It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with the rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with the rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.
People never seemed to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.
( )39. Some people want to keep up with the Joneses because they __________.
A. want to be as rich as their neighbors

We can achieve knowledge either actively or passively (被动地). We achieve it actively by direct experience, by testing and proving an idea, or by reasoning.
We achieve knowledge passively by being told by someone else. Most of the learning that takes place in the classroom and the kind that happens when we watch TV or read newspapers or magazines is passive. If we achieve knowledge by passive learning, it’s not surprising that we depend on it in our everyday communication with friends and co-workers.
Unfortunately, passive learning has a serious problem. It makes us tend to accept what we are told even when it is little more than hearsay and rumor (谣言).
Did you ever play the game Rumor? It begins when one person writes down a message but doesn’t show it to anyone. Then the person whispers it, word for word, to another person. That person, in turn, whispers it to still another, and so on, through all the people playing the game. The last person writes down the message word for word as he or she hears it. Then the two written statements are compared. Typically, the original message has changed.
That’s what happens in daily life. The simple fact that people repeat a story in their own words changes the story. Then, too, most people listen imperfectly. And many enjoy adding their own creative touch to a story, trying to improve on it, stamping(打上标记)it with their own personal style. Yet those who hear it think they know.
This process is also found among scholars and writers: A statement of opinion by one writer may be re-stated as fact by another, who may in turn be quoted by yet another; and this process may continue, unless it happens to someone to question the facts.
( )43. According to the passage, passive learning may occur in _______.
A. doing a medical experiment B. solving a math problem
C. visiting an exhibition D. doing scientific reasoning
( )44. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refers to _____.
A. active learning
B. knowledge
C. communication
D. passive learning
( )45. The writer mentions the game Rumor to show that _____.
A. a message may be changed when being passed on
B. a message should be delivered in different ways
C. people may have problems with their sense of hearing
D. people tend not to believe in what they know as rumor
( )46. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Active learning is less important.
B. Passive learning may not be reliable.
C. Active learning happens more often.
D. Passive learning is not found among writers.

Gone are the days when men and women couldn’t associate (交往) with each other. When we are asked whether boys and girls can associate with each other, most of us will say, “Yes, of course. Why not?”
If we want to deal with the association between boys and girls properly, here are some “dos and don’ts” for you to follow.
1. Keep a normal and healthy state of mind(心态). Our schools and classes are made up of boys and girls. It is very natural for boys and girls to contact each other and build up the friendship with the students of the other sex. Generally speaking, we should broaden the circle of the association. We should make as many friends as possible. We should have more friends of the other sex instead of one or two. We should contact the students in public instead of in secret.
2. Contact students of the other sex warmly, generously and sincerely. Don’t be too nervous or too shy in contact with a person of the other sex. In that case it is very difficult for you to make a lot of friends, as no one likes a person who is too shy to say a word. If you are too shy a person, you can also find a way out. First of all, you can contact the students with the same interest and hobby with you. As both of you have much in common, you may have much to talk about. If you keep doing like that, little by little, you will gladly find you are also as free to express yourself as others.
3. Don’t fall into the ditch(泥潭)of early love. The boys and girls at adolescence (青春期) are rich in feeling and full of imagination. They are easy to regard the friendship as a sign of love and fall in love with each other at an early age. In my opinion, boys and girls at middle school are too young and too tender to shoulder the heavy duty of love. Early love is a green apple that can’t be eaten. An apple won’t taste sweet until it is fully ripe (成熟). Do keep out of early love.
13. Should boys and girls contact each other in public or in secret?
______________________________________________________________________
14. What does the underlined sentence in the 3rd paragraph mean?
______________________________________________________________________
15. Does the writer think the boys and girls at adolescence should have early love?

Some animals can be trained to help humans. For example, specially trained dogs help blind people walk around the town safely. Some kinds of monkeys can be taught things too. They can learn how to help people who can’t use their arms or legs. The monkeys pick up the phone when it rings, carry shopping bags and do housework.
In the wild, animals and humans are not usually friends, but there are a few interesting examples where they can work together. In Africa, the honeyguide bird works with humans to find food. The bird likes to eat the grubs (幼虫) — a type of insect that lives inside a beehive (蜂巢,蜂窝). It knows how to find beehives but it can’t open them and get the grubs. People like to eat honey, but they aren’t very good at finding beehives, so the bird and the people help each other. The bird flies to a beehive and people follow it. When the people open the beehive and take the honey, they give the grubs to the bird.
In Laguna in the south of Brazil, fishermen and dolphins work as a team. The ocean isn’t very clean, so the fishermen can’t see the fish. However, dolphins can find them easily by using sounds. When the dolphins find a large group of fish, they make a noise to tell the fishermen. Then the dolphins push the fish to the beach. The fishermen wait in the water near the beach and catch a lot of fish in their nets. The fishermen’s nets make it easier for the dolphins to catch fish too. In Laguna, fishermen and dolphins have been working together for many years. The fishermen teach their children how to work with the dolphins. The dolphins must be happy to help because they teach their babies how to work with the humans!

It’s easy to make your own Internet page. The easiest way is to use a special programme called a “web editor (编辑)”. You can find these programmes on the Internet.
First think about some things to put on your Internet page by looking at other people’s pages. You need to put your Internet page on a bigger computer called a “host” which stores the pages so that other people can see them. These computers are owned by special Internet companies. Our programme may be able to help you find a host computer which you can use for free, but some companies will charge (收费) money for this.
To make your Internet page, start up the programme and write some text in the window, then use the signs you can see on the computer to put in pictures and make the text larger or smaller, and change the way your page looks. You can also put photos on your Internet page. First, you need to put the photo in your computer, then use your mouse to move the photo to the place you want it. Choose the correct sign for putting photos onto the page, then find the name of your photo in your computer. When you’ve found it, choose that one with your mouse and put your photo on your Internet page.
You can also put signs on your Internet page to join it to other people’s pages. Visitors to your page can follow these signs to find out more about a subject. For example, if your page includes some information about Jackie Chen, you could put on a sign that takes you to the page for his fan club.
When you have completed your Internet page, you can put it on the Internet. After you put your page on the Internet, anyone will be able to see it.

Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. “I was a clothes addict (有瘾的人),” he jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got winkled(起皱的).” Today David wears casual clothes---- Khaki pants and a sports shirt---- to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. “I’m working harder than ever,” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable.”
More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work. In the United States, the change from normal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their workers to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as “dress-down Friday” of “casual Friday.” “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for workers has really become an everyday thing,” said business consultant Maisly Jones.
Why have so many companies started allowing their workers to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new workers if it has a casual dress code. “A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work,” says the owner of a software company, “so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive (有生产力的 ) when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study made by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of workers said they believe that casual dress improves worker morale. Only 4 percent of workers said that casual dress has a bad effect on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.”
( )41. Why did David Smith joke “I was a clothes addict,”?
A. Because he often wore Khaki pants and a sports suit
B. Because he couldn’t stand a clean appearance
C. Because he wanted his clothes to look neat all the time
D. Because he used to carry a fresh suit to work
( )42. According to this passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

For those of us who are studying at school, the time of exams is very stressful and difficult. Some people find exam times so bad that they become ill, because they are afraid of failing; they are afraid of letting their parents and family down. If exams are really making you ill or worried, don’t hide your feelings. Talk to someone about it. Maybe you can speak to a friend or someone in your family or teachers at your place of study. If one person doesn’t help you, ask someone else.
How to get through exams? Here is some advice:
Ask a teacher or tutor about how to review your lessons, and exam skills—how to work when you are in an exam.
Take short rests during your time of work. If your mind is tired, it will not remember well.
Plan your work: study at times when you know you will work at your best.
Get enough sleep, and eat healthy food.
You need exercise to work well. Walk, run, and play sport— whatever you enjoy.
Stop thinking about the future and failing.
If you feel ill, talk to someone about your worries. But don’t be too relaxed! Some stress over exams makes you work hard for them.
If it upsets you to talk to your friends about an exam when it is finished, don’t do it! In fact, don’t even think about the exam you have finished. What is done is done. You cannot change what you have written!
To this advice, we could add:
If you are studying in the evening, don’t go straight to bed. Your mind will still be “going round and round”—thinking too much. Do something else, maybe walk or get exercise. Choose something that will relax you, and make you think of other things.
13. Is time of exams stressful and difficult?
14. What should you do if the exam upsets you when it is finished?

Dear Mr. Wang,
I’m glad to tell you something about my school life. My name is Bob. I study at No. 14 Middle School, which is not only modern but also beautiful. The teachers in my school are so kind and hardworking that I love them very much. Of all the subjects, I like English best, because I want to be a volunteer at 2008 Olympics. My favorite sport is basketball. My friends and I used to play it together after class, but now we hardly ever have time to have fun. Every day we have too much homework to do.
Although my school life is a little boring now, I know I should work hard at my lessons. As a teenager, it is my duty to try my best to deal with each challenge in my school life.
I hope this letter can help you.
Yours,
Bob

There are many unusual hotels around the world. In Greenland, there is a hotel made out of ice, open between December and April every year. In Turkey, there is a cave hotel with a television, furniture, and a bathroom in each room. And in Bolivia(玻利维亚—南美洲西部国家), there is the Salt Palace Hotel.
Thousands of years ago, the area around the Salt Palace Hotel was a large lake. But over time, all the waiters disappeared. Today, the area has only two small lakes and two salt deserts.
The larger of the two deserts, the Uyuni, is 12,000 square kilometres. During the day, the desert is bright white because of the salt. There are no roads across the Uyuni desert, so local people must show guests the way to the hotel.
In the early 1990s, a man named Juan Quesada built the hotel. He cut big blocks of salt from the desert and used the blocks to build it. Everything in the hotel is made out of salt: the walls, the roof(屋顶), the tables, the chairs, the beds, and the hotel’s bar.
The sun heats(使变热) the walls and roof during the day. At night the desert is very cold, but the rooms stay warm. The hotel has twelve rooms. A single room costs $40 a night, and a double room costs $60.
A sign on the hotel’s wall tells guests, “ Please don’t lick(添)the walls.”

At present, a number of middle school students have picked up a bad habit — cheating in examinations.
There are three main reasons. First, schools have given students too many exams, some of which are too difficult. Second, some students are not hard-working and they don’t work hard at their lessons. Third, they waste a lot of time playing games or surfing the Internet. So they haven’t enough time to prepare for the exams. Finally, students have to do so to make their teachers and parents happy.
In my opinion, cheating in exams does great harm to our study. We students should be honest and diligent, and only in this way can we improve our study and make progress. Besides, our teachers should offer us fewer exams and more time to study for ourselves.

What is the point of studying towns in this way? For me, it is simply that one gets a greater depth of pleasure by visiting and seeing a town with one’s own eyes. A 33 visit to a town may help one better understand why it is attractive 34 just reading about it in a guide-book.

Jack walked up to the woman and said, "Hello, Sue, how are you? May I sit and talk with you for a while?" "Of course, please sit down," Sue said. Jack sat down next to Sue on the bench, and they talked quietly together. The dog continued to look up at Sue, as if waiting to be fed.

Years ago, I lived in a building in a large city. The building next door was only a few feet away from mine. There was a woman who lived there, whom I had never met, yet I could see her seated by her window each afternoon, sewing or reading.
After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself, “I wonder why that woman doesn't wash her window. It really looks terrible.”
One bright morning I decided to clean my flat, including washing the window on the inside.
Late in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was clearly visible. Her window was clean!
Then it dawned on me. I had been criticizing (批评) her dirty window, but all the time I was watching hers through my own dirty window.
That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings?
Since then, whenever I wanted to judge (评判) someone, I asked myself first, “Am I looking at him through my own dirty window?”
Then I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see the world about me more clearly.

When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that my life has its problems too.
One big disadvantage is money. It costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of traveling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.
Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever you tastes in culture or entertainment(娱乐活动). Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising—and, what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.
Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is, when you are in your teens(十几岁)or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.
( )43. What was the writer always thinking about when he was a child?
A. Staying on the farm. B. Moving to the countryside.
C. Leaving home for the city. D. Running away from the school.
( )44. Which of the following is true about the writer?
A. He is very old now. B. He is in good health.
C. He prefers driving a car. D. He lives in the city now.
( )45. In the passage, the writer tries to __________.
A. express his opinions about way of life B. describe his life in the countryside
C. show an interest in the outside world D. persuade the reader to live in the city
( )46. How is the passage mainly developed?
A. By inferring. B. By comparing.
C. By listing examples. D. By giving explanations.

When we think of harvests (收获), we usually think of plants. But can you also harvest a liquid? Sure. Just think of rainwater. Best of all, it is free, except for the cost of a way to collect it.
One way to harvest rainwater is with some technology developed by International Development Enterprises. It is in the American state of Colorado. It created the technology as a way for people in developing countries to avoid having to drink polluted (污染) ground water.
The rainwater harvesting system (系统) created by International Development Enterprises uses pipes (管子) to collect water from the tops of buildings. There are pipes between the buildings and two-meter tall storage tank (存储容器), which prevents dirt and leaves in the water from falling inside the tank.
A cover sits over the tank. It protects the water inside the tank from evaporating (蒸发). The cover also prevents insects (昆虫) from flying into the water and laying eggs.
Inside the tank is a low-cost plastic bag that collects the water. The bag sits inside another plastic bag. The two bags are supported (支撑) inside the metal tank. In all, the tank can collect to 3,500L of water.
International Development Enterprises says the bags inside the tank may need to be replaced every two to three years. However, if the bags are not damaged (损坏) by sunlight, they could last even longer.
The developers say one tank can provide a family of five with enough rainwater to go through a five-month dry season.

Dear Tom,
I’m glad to hear that you’d like to come to Beijing. I’m sure it will be a great experience for you to travel in China. There are many places of interest in Beijing, such as the Palace Museum, the Great Wall and so on. Over the years, Beijing has changed a lot. As the host city of the 29th Olympic Games, Beijing has built many new modern buildings which are also worth seeing, such as the Water Cube, and the Bird Nest. As we all know, many kinds of local foods in Beijing are not only cheap but also delicious. You can have a taste of it. As for the transportation in Beijing, I have to say that it really needs improving. Because of the traffic jams, traveling around the city by renting a bike can be a good way. It’s comfortable to stay in a hostel in Beijing. It also has a low price. In general, Beijing is still a fantastic city with the brilliant culture, which is waiting for you to visit.
I hope you can enjoy yourself when you are in Beijing.

People believes that climbing can do good to health. Where can you learn the skill of climbing then? If you think that you have to go to the mountains to learn how to climb, you’re wrong. Many Americans are learning to climb in city gyms (体育馆). Here, people are learning on special climbing walls. The climbing wall goes straight up and has small holding places for hands and feet.
How do people climb the wall? To climb, you need special shoes and a harness(保护带) around your chest to hold you. There are ropes (绳索)tied to your harness. The ropes hold you in place so that you don’t fall. A beginner’s wall is usually about 15 feet high, and you climb straight up. There are small pieces of metal that stick out for you to stand on and hold on to. Sometimes it’s easy to see the new piece of metal. Sometimes, it’s not. The most difficult part is to control your fear. It’s normal for humans to be afraid of falling, so it’s difficult not to feel fear. But when you move away from the wall, the harness and the ropes hold you, and you begin to feel safe. You move slowly until you reach the top.
Climbing attracts people because it’s good exercise for almost everyone. You use your whole body, especially your arms and legs. This sport gives your body a complete workout. When you climb, both your mind and your body can become stronger.

三、阅读与表达 (共10分,每小题2分)
If you do not use your arms or legs for a long time, they become weak. When you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. But many people do not know that memory works in the same way.
When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it a chance to become strong.
If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault(过错). But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame (负责), and few of us know that it is just his own fault.
Have you ever noticed that some people who can’t read or write usually have better memories? This is because they can’t read or write and they have to remember things with their mind – they can’t write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories, so they are always exercising their memories.
So if you want to have a good memory, learn from those people: practice remembering.
13. Does memory work in the same way as arms and legs?

Yesterday the police were joined by more than 20 volunteers in the continuing search for the two missing teenagers, Vicky Gray and Tom Hunter, and their guide, Gavin Jones. The police said that they had disappeared during an adventure (冒险) tour of Cape York Peninsula.
This was the second day of the search and the police were now very worried about the safety of the three missing people.
The police said that the search had covered a wide area, but the rainforest was thick and their work was made harder by the recent rain. Later on Chief Inspector (警官) Roger Fleet said, “The travellers had a radio with them. If they had been in trouble, they would have called us.”
The three travellers left Cooktown very early on Saturday morning in a Toyota car. They took a small dirt road that runs down to the Daintree River, a dangerous river full of crocodiles (鳄鱼). Chief Inspector Roger Fleet said the tourists wouldn’t have got into trouble if they had stayed on the main road.
A photo of Vicky and Tom was found by a policeman under the “Be Careful about crocodiles” sign near the river. Why was the photo left behind? This is just one of the unanswered questions. Other questions are: Why was the photo left behind? Why was the Toyota parked and locked at the edge of the rainforest? The police said that the travelers had left a map of the area behind. Why? Why had someone drawn a cross on the point (地点) where the car is? Is this a sign? What does it mean? If anyone can give information or has seen these three young people, contact the local police in Cooktown.

Where in the world can you take an hour’s train ride, and pass a forest, a London street, a scene from the Wild West, and a burning building that never burns down? There’s only one place, and that’s Hollywood, in California. The scenes you see from the tourist train are film sets(布景) in the Universal Studios, one of the oldest and largest movie companies(公司) in the USA.
A visit to Universal Studios brings back memories of great days of Hollywood, the films and the stars. But they are only memories. Hollywood isn’t quite the same as it used to be. Costs have gone up and confidence has gone down. Movie-makers are afraid to spend their money on expensive new ideas. Instead, they repeat old ones.
The film industry is changing fast. Teenagers still go out to the movies. The theatre is a good place to meet friends away from home. But older people mostly stay home to watch series, like Dynasty have become as important to Hollywood as expensive movies. These “soap opera”, as they are called, show rich, powerful families living in beautiful homes and wearing beautiful clothes. But the actors and actresses are nearly all middle-aged, like many of the people who watch them.
Though it is soap operas that are keeping the film-makers of Hollywood in Business, big films are still being made in America. But more and more of them are made outside Hollywood. New York is the most important new center, but there are many others as well. Movie-makers have realized that they don’t need Hollywood any more. Modern cameras and real houses instead of expensively made copies in a studio. Other states, especially Florida and Texas, are working hard to take the film business away from California. They are offering better working conditions and lower cost.
But Hollywood is fighting back. The state of California is trying hard to keep its best-known industry.

C. They are less attractive.
D. They are cheaper and easier to make.

A new study has found no evidence that sunscreen, commonly used to reduce the risk of skin cancer, actually increase the risk.
Researchers from the University of Iowa based their findings on a review of 18 earlier studies that looked at the association between sunscreen use and melanoma (黑素瘤). They said that they found flaws in studies that had reported associations between sunscreen use and higher risk of melanoma
Most health experts believe that by protecting the skin from the harmful effects of the sun, sunscreen helps prevent skin cancer, which is increasing in incidence (发生率) faster than any other cancer in the United States.
But questions has been raised about sunscreen and whether it may has opposite effect, perhaps by allowing people to remain exposed to the sun longer without burning.
The researchers said that among the problems with some earlier studies is that they often failed to take into account that those people most at risk for skin cancer—people with fair skin(白皙的肤色) and freckles (雀斑), for example—are more likely to use sunscreen. As a result, it may appear that sunscreen users get cancer more often.
The studies, which generally relied on volunteers to recall their sunscreen use, were also unable to prove how well the products had been applied, said the new study.

In my free time, I’d like to go on a trip. However, where should I go? New York City seems to be a good choice. I’ve never been there before, and I know that there are a great number of places of interest, such as the Central Park, the Fifth Avenue and so on. Also, it’s famous all over the world for its wonderful galleries, and there, I can practice my English. However, New York is so far from my country and going there may cost too much money. So maybe Singapore is a far more suitable place for me to take a holiday. There are oceans of beautiful views, which always deeply attract me. What’s more, it has lots of museums and I’ll enjoy myself walking through them. Besides, Singapore is a good place for shopping. I love shopping, so I’m sure I’ll have lots of good time there. All in all, I prefer Singapore.

It was a lovely sunny Saturday morning in early October. Jan Hunter sat out of the window of her room as she planned what she would do today. She would like to take Buster, her sheep, to the field for a short walk. Perky, her hamster (an animal like a mouse) and Slipper, her snake, would enjoy an outing too.
“I’ll help you clean your room,” Mrs. Hunter said. “Then you’ll be free to do what you want the rest of the day.”
Jan started picking up her clothes. Mrs. Hunter turned to the bed to take off the sheets (床单). As she lifted the pillow( 枕头), Slipper moved quickly under the blanket(毯子).
“That does it!” Mrs. Hunter cried. “Get that snake out of here! And look at this—one of your best shoes too dirty to see the color. This is it. Jan. No more animals in the house; that’s final!” Mrs. Hunter said in a loud voice as she marched out of the room.
Jan felt sad. She walked slowly across the street, Buster followed behind, to tell her tale to her old friend Mr. Ward. He thought for a few minutes. Then he said that if Jan found the right cages(笼子) for the pets, perhaps Mrs. Hunter could let the animals live out on the warm sun porch(门廊).
Jan remembered an old bird cage that would do for Perky. Buster’s bed could simply be moved. Something for Slipper, though, was a real problem.
“Let’s see what there is out in my garden,” Mr. Ward suggested. They found a aquarium(鱼缸)in the corner. Mr. Ward pulled out a large piece of glass that would do for a cover. Jan and Buster rushed home to see what Mrs. Hunter would say.
When Mr. Ward heard Jan’s loud cry of joy, he knew Jan’s troubles were over.

B
Plants and animals, including humans, need food and water to live on. These are from the natural resources(资源) on Earth. To protect these resources, we need to keep the air clean and the water drinkable. We need to keep the soil (土壤)healthy. How do we do that?
Protect the land
The soil that covers fields and farms provides much of the food we eat. Human activities such as plowing(耕) fields, mining(采矿), and building highways can destroy (破坏)the land. Erosion happen when wind and water carry away the soil. Soil erosion can turn rich farmland into a desert wasteland. So does this mean we shouldn’t build a highway or plow a field? Of course not. But it does mean we might think about Earth—friendly ways of doing those things.
Today farmers plow their fields in different ways to prevent erosion. They try to use less water for their crops. They keep animals from eating the growing grass in just one area. Farmers also plant trees to prevent erosion from happening.
Save the Trees
Another human activity that damages the land is deforestation(采伐森林). People take away a large number of trees from a forest. Millions of square kilometers of forest disappear each year. When this happens, many plants and animals lose their places to live. They may die out, or become very few. Scientists haven’t even discovered all the living things in the forest. We may be losing some without even knowing they are there. Trees absorb (吸收)and use carbon dioxide (二氧化碳)when they make food. Environmentalists encourage careful management of the forests. They ask people to replant trees after they cut down the forest.
Recycle, Reuse, Reduce
People throw a piece of paper into the wastebasket after using it. The paper becomes trash. Where does the trash go next? Much of our trash ends up in landfills(垃圾填埋地). They take up valuable land and sometimes pollute the water, air, and land around them. More than a third of the trash in landfills is paper. Recycling, reusing, and reducing what you throw away can cut down on the need for more landfills. In fact, we can recycle about eighty percent of household trash.

A. Plowing fields and mining
B. Cutting down trees and farming.

( )39. How much of the trash can we recycle?
A. All the trash. B. Very little. C. One third. D. Four fifths.
( )40. What’s the purpose of the author writing the passage?
To ask people to look for places to plant trees.
To tell people how to protect natural resources.
To show how the lands are destroyed by people.
To discuss ways of protecting animals and plants.

Growing up in Philadelphia, Lieberman started cooking with his stay-at-home dad when he was seven. His food-loving family had two kitchens, and he quickly learned what was the best way to bake his cakes. Lieberman improved his kitchen skills greatly during a year abroad before college, learning from a cook in Italy and studying local specialties (地方特色菜) in Germany, Spain and France. At Yale, he was known for throwing dinner parties, single-handedly frying and baking while mixing drinks for dozens of friends. Just for fun, he and some friends decided to tape a show named Campus Cuisine about his cooking. Lieberman was a real college student showing his classmates how to do things like make drinks out of dining-hall fruit. That helped the show become very popular among the students. They would stop Lieberman after classes to ask for his advice on cooking. Tapes of the show were passed around, with which his name went beyond the school and finally to the Food Network.
Food Network producer Flay hopes the young cook will find a place on the network television. He says Lieberman’s charisma is key. “Food TV isn’t about food anymore," says Flay. " It' s about your personality(个性) and finding a way to keep people's eyeballs on your show. "
But Lieberman isn't putting all his eggs in one basket. After taping the first season of the new show, Lieberman was back in his own small kitchen preparing sandwiches. 三、阅读与表达 (共10分,每小题2分)
Nearly every parent says that we never grow up. In fact, we are maybe 16 or 17 years old. In their eyes, we are always little ones and always do wrong things. For example, when I need to stay at home, alone, they always worry about me and my life without them.
Most parents always think that they have offered the best things they can to make their children live in a comfortable world. They buy their children pretty clothes, cool shoes, strange but expensive school things, and always a thousand-yuan-cost bike. They think that they have done everything they can to their dear little children. In return, they only want their little boy to give them good results in the examinations.
But why their little babies still can’t understand them? Why? Does it mean that they still want more material( 物质的) things? No. As a matter of fact, what they want is a true family. What does a true family mean? I think it means a place where we can hide ourselves from the outside cold world. From here, we can get warmth, we can get consolation(安慰), and we can get happiness. And one important thing is that we should be stronger and more confident(自信的)in the outside world because we know that we have a family.
So I think that parents should save their money and sit down to talk with their child to let them know that they have a true family, so the child and his parents could understand each other more and more. Then, no boy will be regarded as a little boy.
What are we always like in our parents’ eyes?

It can read words with small letters and large letters.

When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor, Dr. Gibbs. He didn't look like any doctor I'd ever known. He never invited us to play in his yard, but he was a very kind person.
When Dr. Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was planting trees. He owned a large field and wanted to make it a forest.
The good doctor had some interesting ideas about planting trees. He never watered his new trees. Once I asked why. He said that watering plants spoiled them, and that if you watered them, each baby tree would grow weaker and weaker, so you had to make things difficult for them and pick out the weaker trees early on.
He talked about how watering trees made for shallow roots, and how trees that weren't watered had to grow deep roots in search of water under the earth by themselves. Deep roots were very important.
So he never watered his trees. He'd planted an oak and, instead of watering it every morning, he beat it with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree's attention.
Dr. Gibbs died several years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I watched him plant about twenty-five years ago. They're very big and strong now. I planted some trees a few years back and carried water to them for a whole summer. After two years of caring too much, whenever a cold wind blows in, they shake a lot.
Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. Mostly I pray (祈祷) that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to face difficulties. There's always a cold wind blowing somewhere, so what we need to do is to pray for roots that reach deep into the brave heart, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, they could face it strongly and won't be beaten down.
( )39. What does the underlined word “shallow” in the fourth paragraph probably mean?
A. Near to the surface of the earth. B. Short.
C. Thin. D. Weak.
( )40. The writer’s trees shake a lot whenever a cold wind blows because ______.
A. he has never beaten his trees with a rolled-up newspaper
B. he didn't often water his trees
C. his trees are younger than Dr. Gibbs’
D. he has done too many things for his trees
( )41. The writer wants to change his prayer, hoping that his sons will ______.
A. not catch a cold in the rain easily
B. be strong enough in the cold wind in winter
C. be better at planting trees
D. be stronger in their lives
( )42. Which can be the best title of the passage?
A. Watering Trees B. Growing Roots
C. How to Be a Father D. How to Plant Trees
C
Our “Mommy and Me” time began two years ago. My next-door neighbor and fellow mother, Christie, and I were out in our front yards, watching seven children of age 6 and under ride their bikes up and down. “I wish I could take one of my children out alone,” said Christie.
Then we worked out a plan: When Christie takes one of her children out, I’ll watch her other three. And when she watches two of mine, I’ll take someone out.
The children were extremely quick to accept the idea of “Mommy and Me” time. Christie’s daughter, McKenzie, went first. When she returned, the other children showered her with tons of questions. McKenzie was smiling broadly. Christie looked refreshed and happy. “She’s like a different child when there’s no one else around,” Christie shared with me quickly. With her mother all to herself, McKenzie didn’t have to make an effort to gain attention.
Just as Christie had noticed changes in McKenzie, I also discovered something different in each of my children during our alone times. For example, I am always surprised when my daughter, who is seldom close to me, holds my hand frequently. My stuttering(口吃的)son, Tom, doesn’t stutter once during our activities since he doesn’t have to struggle for a chance to speak. And the other son, Sam, who’s always a follower when around other children, shines as a leader during our times together.
The “Mommy and Me” time allows us to be simply alone and away with each child ---talking, sharing, and laughing, which has been the biggest gain. Every child deserves(应得到)to be an only child at least once in a while.
( )43. What is the text mainly about?
A. The experience of the only child being with mother.
B. The advantage of spending time with one child at a time.
C. The happy life of two families.
D. The basic needs of children.
( )44. Right after McKenzie came back, the other children were _____________.
A. happy B. curious C. regretful D. friendly
( )45. What is one of the changes the author finds in her children?
A. The daughter acts like a leader. B. Sam holds her hand more often.
C. The boys become better followers. D. Tom has less difficulty in speaking.
( )46. The author seems to believe that ___________.
A. having brothers and sisters is fun B. it’s tiring to look after three children
C. every child needs parents’ full attention D. parents should watch others’ children

The World Future Society is a group of people from more than 80 countries who are interested in modern technology. The things that we will be able to do in the twenty-first century (since the year 2000) should help us in many ways, at home and at work, in our own country or around the world. The World Future Society wrote some articles. Here are just some of them:
People may live for up to 120 years and use new technology to help when people can’t hear, can’t see, or have other problems. The number of people over a hundred years old could go from 135, 000 today to 2.2 million by 2050. By 2015 people think that 100 million workers will be able to work at home for a company in a different country by using the Internet.
Worldwide e-business will become even more popular with online shops that sell special products for each person, which will be brought to their house the next day.
The technology for making energy from wind and the sun is growing very quickly, In the future wind and Sun energy could become much cheaper and many more countries could use it. This would be very useful in poor countries. The air in big cities would also become much cleaner and healthier as a result.
The Internet will help to create more worldwide friendship. Families may spend more time together as people will be able to do 24-hour online banking and shopping at home.
The new science of “nanotechnology” (very small robots or machine) will make all kinds of products smaller and lighter. Very, very small machines could take away rubbish, make things in factories, and help inside the human body by taking away fat. By 2010 people will be able to wear these small machines that look like watches, which will give them lots of information about their body and keep them healthy.
13. Will technology help people live longer in the future?
14. Will the air in big cities become cleaner or dirtier in the future?

Beijing's battle to correct English-language signs before the 2008 Olympics has started.
By the end of the year, all public “W.C.” in the city will be called “toilets”. In western countries people don't use “W.C”, because it is quite rude in English.
Road signs are also on the list. These signs will be changed into real English word. For example, “Dong Chang'an Jie” will become “East Chang'an Avenue”.
But there is still a question. What to do about menus? Thousands of tourists, athletes and reporters will visit the city, and most of them can't speak Chinese or understand Chinese characters.
Now linguists (语言学者) are trying hard to translate popular Chinese dishes like “ants climbing the tree ” into good English.
Chinese children will be able to get a taste of adult working life in the Kids City. It will allow children aged 5 to 10 to try out different jobs after it opens.
The world's first Kids City was opened in Mexico City in 1999. In 2006, Kids City opened its Tokyo Park in Japan. It became an attraction to kids. Now it will begin in China. It will offer more than 50 jobs, including pilots, doctors, police officers and lawyers. Inside the city, every kid would get a bank account (帐户) holding special money. And they can only spend the money in the park. They could earn more money by working in different places.

We do some strange things when we don’t like the way our life is going. Too often we blame (埋怨) someone else.
“I wish my parents were more understanding.”
“I have such a bad Chemistry teacher!”
“My friends are so boring and self-centered. They make my life worse and worse.”
Blame! Blames! Blame!
It seems natural so sing this self-pitying song, but the truth is, if you don’t like your life, you should do something about it. No one else knows exactly how you feel or what you need. No one can read your mind correctly. You are the only one with the power(能力) to check your life, and if you want it to be different, you can change what you’re doing. This means asking …”What do I need? What do I want to do?” instead of trying to meet others’ needs. For example, try to decide how you want to spend your evening instead of asking somebody else for advice. We teach other people how we want to be treated. If you don’t think of our own needs, no one else will either.
When you’re in trouble, don’t give away your power to decide how you feel abut yourself. Choose how you want to think and act. Other people cant’ make you unhappy or angry. They only act in their own way and then it’s up to you to decide how you will respond (回应). For example, your friends go out to lunch without you. You feel angry. How are you going to act? You may blame your friends … “They are not kind. Who needs them anyway?” or you may tell your friends how you feel, listen to their explanation (解释), and let them know you’d like to be invited next time.
When you decide everything in your own way, you’re getting hold of your own life and shaping it according to your tastes and feelings. You can choose to be happy, to make friends and to build an interesting life. When you blame others for what is or isn’t happening in your life, you have stopped growing or learning.
One of the most important rules is that you can never change another person by your direct action. The only person you have the right and power to change is yourself. Once you change, the other person then has something different to respond to and change is possible. If you want change in your life, begin with yourself … put love into your power to take action.
( )40. What should we do if we don’t like our life?
A. Sing that self-pitying song. B. Read our minds correctly.
C. Change what we’re doing. D. Tell others what we want.

A. forget it and be still friendly with them B. talk to them and try to find out why
C. do the same thing to them in return D. ask somebody else to talk to them
( )42. What’s the writer’s idea about how to change others?
He thinks it’s impossible to change others.
He believes our love can change everything.
He chooses to talk with others directly.
He prefers to change ourselves first instead.
( )43. How many points of view (观点) are mentioned in the passage?
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.

Animals seem to have the sense to eat when they are hungry and they do not eat more than their bodies need. It has been shown that rats will, when given a choice over a period of time, prefer water with vitamins to water without vitamins even there is no difference in taste or smell between the two water bottles. When a fragrant flavor (香味) was added to the vitamin—enriched water, the rats did seem to develop a taste for it and kept drinking it, even after the vitamins were switched to the clear water. In time, however, they broke the habit and went back to where the necessary vitamins were.
In a classic experiment, babies of 6 to 12 months old were placed in a cafeteria feeding arrangement, with a wide selection of baby food before them. They were given whatever they pointed to or appeared interested in. We are told that at first they showed some unusual eating patterns(方式), but over a period of time they managed to select well-balanced diet.
So, in selecting food, rats and babies do seem to know and act on what’s best for them. Apparently, there is a kind of “body wisdom”, which humans soon lose. Most of us do not eat as wisely as we could. Many of our food preferences are culturally determined and influenced by long established habits. Some people eat foxes, dogs and blackbirds, while we eat cows and pigs. So what people eat and how much they eat seems to be greatly influenced by what is going on around them.
( )44. As far as their eating habits are concerned, babies and rats are similar in that both _____.
have the natural abilities to choose a balanced diet
develop a taste for the same kinds of flavors
have the same eating patterns
prefer flavored food and drink
( )45. In the experiment on rats, a fragrant flavor was added to the water to ______.
prove that vitamins are tasteless
find out rats preference in flavor
encourage rats to drink vitamin-enriched water
test whether rats know which drink is good for them
( )46. According to the passage, adults eating habits differ from those of babies because _____.
adults have more choices of food than babies in eating patterns
adults usually cannot resist the temptation of various delicious food
adults’ eating habits are closely related to the social and culture customs
adults know better than babies what kinds of food are good for their health

Do you have a goal for life? What's it? Do you want to become a writer, singer or just become a rich person?
A recent survey shows that in modern society, most people pick up practical goals, such as “earning money to buy a house and a car”, “to improve one's life quality”, “finding a good job”.
Wang You worked in a small firm (商行) in Nanjing. The job was good and he didn't have to work for extra hours. However, he felt the work was not exciting at all and the life was boring. So he gave up his job and went to Beijing in February, 2007. When he arrived in Beijing, he set his new goal as finding a good job.
Nowadays more and more people want to live a better life. This fact shows that the society is making progress and people's life goals have become more practical. One researcher says, “Everybody has his/her own life goal, which will be surely different from people to people. If one is poor, one's life goal will be to earn more money; if one doesn't have a diploma, studying hard to get a diploma will become his life goal; and if one doesn't have love, his life goal will be to look for it. But if one has no life goal, he will idle away (虚度) his lifetime.”
根据短文内容,完成下列各题。
