Para. 1 ﹡“on one’s way(to)” means
e.g. I’m on my way to Amoy, which highway should I take
Extension: on one’s way to do 在去干…的途中
on one’s way to doing 就要…
in this way 采取这种方法 in any way 无论如何
in no way 无论如何不,决不
by the way 顺便提一下
﹡Word “Antarctic” can divide into Ant plus arctic
Para.2 ﹡Word “polar” is the adj form to pole
﹡“in preparation for” means 为…
= make preparations for (动词短语)
Prepare for 为…作准备
Prepare sth
Prepare to do sth
Prepare sb for = prepare sb to do 让某人做好…准备
Be prepared to do sth
﹡the next year 第二年 而 next year 明年
﹡ “Then came the total darkness of the polar winter” 倒装句,是完全倒装句,主语是the total darkness of the polar winter,谓语是came。
e.g. There stands a clock tower in our school.
Here comes the bus.
There goes the bell.
Then follows a scream of joy.
﹡wait… for 等待。。。
Para.3 ﹡ “He had teams of dogs pulling the sledges and all his men were on skis.”
Here “pulling” as 非谓语动词,modifying teams of dogs
e.g. It’s impolite to have him waiting outside for such a long time.
e.g. I’ll have someone repair the bike for you.
We had the machine mended just now.
He has had his hair cut.
﹡ make rapid progress, 其中progress 是不可数名词 其它搭配有:make little/ great/much/more progress (in), 意为在。。。方面取得进展,进步;
Make progress with 意思同上, in progress 在进行中
﹡ have adj. difficulties (in) Ving/ with sth.
Have some/much/great/little/no difficulty in Ving/with sth.
Extension: have a problem in doing sth
Have a difficult/pleasant/wonderful time in doing sth
Have a struggle in doing sth
Have fun in doing sth
Para.4﹡ shock= surprise,astonish mentions its adj.
Para.5﹡ run out of 用完,耗尽
辨析: run out 与 run out of
Run out 同 give out,而 run out of = use up
e.g I have run out of everything, so I need to go shopping this afternoon.
I have to go shopping this afternoon, for everything has run out.
Para.6 ﹡prove
Prove sb/sth (to be) n./adj.
Prove n./adj.

Carry on sth./ carry on doing = go on with sth/ go on doing(继续做同一件事) go on to do 干完一件事后继续干另一件事
e.g. You should receive a reply within seven days.
We’d better live within our income.
