Two hundred and fifty miles is a long way to go for a haircut. But there we were, in a car filled with toys and baby things, so my 17-month-old son, Nicholas, could get his first haircut. We drove through four states, from New Jersey to Virginia, because his grandfather wanted to share experience with him and knew a barber(理发师) there who would make it special.
When we walked into the Bob' s Barber Shop, it looked as if it hadn' t changed since it opened in 1954. Bob had an easy, low-key smile and not too much of his own hair left.
Nicholas' s haircut began, not a bit unusually. Bob sat him on a board placed across the arms of the chair. He called Nicholas superman and spoke to him in a Donald Duck voice. Nicholas
didn' t know who Superman and Donald were, but we adults got enough fun out of the whole production. When the cut was done, Nicholas had been changed from a naughty baby into a handsome boy. We all agreed Bob had added a year to Nicholas' s appearance. A year at that age means much experience and development.
Bob took before-and-after photos of Nicholas and printed a first-haircut certificate(证书), which read, "This is to certify that Nicholas has had the courage to receive his first haircut" - and a lock (绺) of hair !
Bob offered us a look at the past, even while stealing a bit of it with my son' s new look. But I thought about the future and Nicholas' s hair. As he grows up, many of his memories will be lost - just like the latest hairstyles. So I'll tell him about his earliest days, when there was a first time for everything. I' ll tell him about our time together while I stayed at home to care for him - and all about his first haircut at Bob' s.
56. Why did the author drive such a long way for his son' s first haircut?
A. He would return to his hometown. B. He knew the barber.
C. His wife liked traveling by car. D. His father wanted them to do so.
57. When the barber finished doing Nicholas' s hair, the writer felt ________.
A. content B. disappointed C. surprised D. funny
58. What did the writer think of their experience with his son' s first haircut?
A. Regretful and sad. B. Completely worthless.
C. Worth remembering forever. D. Unforgettable but too common.
59. We can infer from this passage that Bob ________.
A. cut babie's hair in an unusual way B. succeeded in working as a barber
C. always made his shop look special D. liked making fun of others

With the death of Arthur Miller in February 2005, America lost one of the finest play-wrights in that nation' s literary(文学) history.
Born in New York in 1915, Miller began writing plays while he was a student at the University of Michigan, where several of his efforts in plays got prizes. At the time, in the mid-1930s, Michigan was the only university with a creative writing program. "Tuition(学费) was cheap", said Miller. "And I loved the friendly, unpretentious air. Plus," he joked, "it was the only place that would take me!"
In 1944, he had his first play acted out on New York' s Broadway. It was called The Man Who Had All the Luck and it was very nearly his last, the show dosing after four performances. "50 years ago, I gave up forever," he said in 1994. "I had a total failure with my first play arm I decided never to write another one."
Thankfully, Miller went back on his decision and produced some of the most important English language theatrical writing of the 20th century. His most famous play, Death of a Salesman, which was written in six weeks in 1949, addressed the fight of a particular family, but it also talked about larger problems about moral(道德) values, examining the cost of blind belief in the American Dream.
"I couldn' t have foretold that Death of a Salesman would take on the life that it has," MilNer said. "When I wrote it, it was literally a play about a salesman, but it seems to have become a metaphor(暗喻) for the American way of life."
60. We can learn from the text that Miller ________.
A. was a professor at Michigan University
B. wrote about social problems in America
C. was born in New York in the 1940s
D. had his first success in 1944
61. Miller stayed in Michigan University because ________.
A. he had many friends there B. only it would accept him
C. he didn't have to pay much money D. he could got prizes there
62. Which of the following statements is true about Death of a Salesman?
A. It is only partly about a salesman.
B. It is actually about a salesman.
C. It tells about family problems of blind people.
D. It had been designed to show the American way of life.
63. We can infer that the text is ________.
A. a description of American literary history
B. a book review
C. a report about an event
D. an introduction to a writer
C
Bird watching is fast becoming a popular game in America. In fact, there are many more people watching birds than those watching baseball and football games in North America.
The most important part of successful bird watching is to get to where the birds are. Although this sounds clear, many people waste their time and energy at poor places. Some people have the luck of watching birds in their backyards, while some need to search for places.
Before looking for a place, it' s better to do some researching as to the varieties of birds that can be found there. Although there are numerous species(物种) around, only a few species are found in certain places. So with a little preparation, it would be rather easy to tell bird species from one another. To watch the birds, it' s always better to have a great pair of binoculars(双筒望远镜) ,preferably a pair with a built-in digital camera. Some binoculars can keep your view from shaking, and they are anti-fogging, low-light viewing and wide-view. Such a binocular will turn an ordinary experience into a great one! Practise using your binoculars before actually bird watching; birds are usually in sight for only a few seconds, and this practice leads to one becoming skillful.
It's always better to take someone with you when bird watching, as life is always better when shared. Not only can you spend time with your friend, you may get the best sighting with the help of him or her. The best part of bird watching is that you, as the viewer, get to control your experience. The more prepared you are, the better the results. And finally, no bird watcher is actually complete without a bird watching journal where you can note all the finding of the day.
64. According to the text, if you want to have a successful bird watching, you must ________.
A. go with a bird expert B. bring a digital camera
C. stay in your backyard D. choose a suitable place
65. How many pieces of advice does the writer give to bird watchers?
A. Six. B. Eight. C. Three. D. Four.
66. The underlined word "journal" in paragraph 4 probably refers to something ________.
A. that people enjoy reading
B. that is used as a written record
C. that tells you how to use a binocular
D. that people use to watch birds
67. We learn from the last paragraph that the writer ________.
A. prefers bird watching to reading
B. always stay with others when traveling
C. enjoys sharing good things with friends
D. thinks journals are better than notes
D

The percentage of students who go into further education is seen as a key factor(因素) in the development of a country's social and economic infrastructure(经济基础). In the UK, about 33 percent of 18-year-olds choose to go into further education, while in the USA, the figure is near half.
A survey suggests many university students may not be taking the best choice about their courses. In Britain, the university acceptance ratio(比率) is anything from one in two applications(申请) to one in 12, which means there is serious competition for the best university places. Not getting into the university of their choice can have a serious effect on students' serf-respect, and some students do so badly at interview that they are mentally hurt.
Take Alan for example. Five years ago, he dropped out of university after just one term and started his own business. He said "I felt a history degree wasn' t the best use of my time. Although my teachers warned me and my parents disagreed with me, I dropped out and set up my own company. It' s been a success."
Elaine has a different opinion, but knows from her own experience that people can make mistakes when choosing what to study. She said, "Somewhat unwillingly, I took the advice of my teacher and studied maths. I loved it but now I' m working in a bank, which I don' t really like very much. My brother, on the other hand, started business course and hated every minute of it. He dropped out and did a nursing diploma(文凭). Now he works in a hospital and he' s really happy. It just goes to show it can take time before you know you' ve made the right decision."
72. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. You must go to university to succeed.
B. Doing business is better than learning.
C. It' s possible to succeed without a degree.
D. You can' t get a job without a diploma.
73. According to the text, students are most hurt by ________.
A. studying for a degree B. choosing university and getting in
C. deciding on the right course D. competing with others at university
74. The underlined phrased "dropped out" in the third paragraph means Allan ________.
A. failed an exam B. had an accident at school
C. left a course without finishing it D. fell behind at university
75. What happened to Elaine?
A. She got an exciting job at a bank. B. She didn't finish her university.
C. She is working in a hospital. D. She isn' t satisfied with her work now.

W:Oh, I'm sorry. It's been all work and no play the whole term, and I still owe my history professor a report.
M:Poor you. I didn' t know you had so much work to do. Tell me what you' ve been doing.
W:This year all the professors have asked all the students to do research. So we' ve been writing research papers and reports continuously.
W:How many reports have you written this term?
M:I've written seven reports in the first two months. Luckily four of them were written as a group project, so I could share the work with three other students.
W:What do you usually do to prepare the reports?
M:All kinds of things. For example, four of us are writing a report on history at the moment. It' s a report about the history of our town over the past fifty years. So we' ve divided the work between us.
W:What exactly do you do?
M: One of us goes to the local library to search for materials about our town. Two of us visit some old people and ask them to tell us stories of things that happened in the town in the past, and the fourth person organizes all the materials.
W:So you have a lot of work to do.
M:Yes, we certainly do.

M:Oh, hello. This is Mr. Chen calling from Shanghai, China. Er...may I speak to Mr. Jackson?
W:I' m afraid Mr. Jackson is not in. He has a very bad cold and he may not be back in the office until Monday. This is Miss Morgan speaking. I' m his assistant. Is there anything I can do for you?
M:Oh, yes, please. Will you tell him I won' t be arriving in New York until quite late next Tuesday. I arrive at 1:00 am local time. I want to know if Mr. Jackson will still be able to meet me at the airport?
W:I'm sure that will be no problem. Anything else?
M:Also please call the Grand Hotel and inform them that I'll be arriving very late.
W:OK.
M:Thanks. Could you please e-mail or call me to confirm the arrangements?
W: Yes, certainly.

Different people from different countries have different customs. Here are some examples. For many Americans, touching a child on the head is a sign of love and caring. However, in many countries in Asia, people believe that the soul is contained inside a person's head. Therefore, if another person touches their heads, they feel that their soul is in danger.
Americans smile to show friendliness and amusement. In Japan, people not only smile when they are happy, they also smile when they' are sad, angry or puzzled. In old Korean culture, smiling meant that a person was foolish or thoughtless. On the island of Puerto Rico, a smile has many good meanings, including "Please" , "Thank you ' and "You are welcome."
In America when a person puts his feet up when facing another it shows he is relaxed, but in some Asian countries, to put your feet up in front of anther person is an insult.
