I. Teaching Procedure
Step 1 Greeting and Review
T: Good morning, boys and girls.
Ss: Good morning, Miss Zou.
T: Who’s on duty today?
S1: I am.
(The student makes a duty report to the class.)
Step 2 Lead-in
1. Show the picture of the basketball. Lead in the word “can”.
T: What are they doing?
Ss: they are playing basketball.
T: Right. Look. They can play it very well. I also like playing basketball. But I can’t play it well. Can you play basketball?
Ss: Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.
2. Ask the Ss their favorite sports. Lead in “can’t”.
T: Which sport do you like best?
S1: I like football best.
T: Great! I like football, too. But I can’t play it. Can you play football?
S1: Yes, I can. I can play it well.
(Write “can” and “can’t” on the Bb)
3. Show a picture of a guitar.
T: What’s this?
Ss: It’s a guitar.
T: Can you play the guitar?
Ss: No, I can’t.
T: Oh. It’s a pity.
4. Show a picture of a dancing girl.
T: What’s the girl doing?
Ss: She is dancing.
T: Do you like dancing?
S: Yes. / No.
T: Who can dance well in your class?
Ss: (a student’s name)
T: Do you want to see her dance?
Ss: Yes.
(Ask the student to dance for the class)
5. The teacher writes all the phrases on the blackboard.

6. Pair work
Ask and answer in pairs, using the phrases on the blackboard.

B: Yes, I can. / Yes, a little. / Yes, very well.

Ask several pairs to report to the class.
T: What can Jane and Maria do at Kangkang’s birthday party? Let’s listen to the tape carefully and answer the questions.
Step 4 Presentation
1. Listening
T: Now, listen to the tape and answer the following questions.
Present the questions on the multimedia.
(1) Can Jane sing Chinese songs at the party?
(2) Can Jane dance the disco?
(3) Can Maria play the guitar?
(4) Can Maria take photos?
Show the key word on the multi-media. Present 1a.
Maria: sing Chinese songs

Step 5 Consolidation
1. Ask the Ss to read after the tape and stress the sentences.
T: Follow the tape and draw "up or down" with your pencil like this.
2. Ask them to rub the stress and read again
T: Rub them clean and now read and check your pronunciation sentence by sentence. Go!
3. Ask the Ss to act out the dialog according the key words on the Bb.
T: Work in pairs, close your book, look at the blackboard and act the dialog out. The pairs who act best get two points. The better pairs get one point.
Step 6 Practice
Game:
Show 12 pictures on the multi-media. Ask the students to remember them in 2 minutes. Then work in groups and write down the phrases and their order in their exercise books. The group which write the most phrases with correct order will be the winner.
Step 7 Project
Set up your own club—Music Club, Sports Club, and Art Club…
Divide the class into 6 or 8 groups. Half of them are the interviewers and others are employees. Use the sentences with “can” and “can’t”.
e.g. A: Can you play the piano?
B: Yes, I can.
A: Welcome to Music Club!
