Several studies in the past few years have shown that music lessons can have a good effect (作用) on kids’ brain.
The researchers found that lessons on a musical instrument like piano or violin can improve mathematic ability and overall IQ (智商). The longer a student learns it, the more greatly he will improve. As little as four months of music lessons can cause improvements during brain development. The study followed a few four-to-six-year-old music learners over the course of a year, measuring changes in each kid’s brain. When the scientists compared the music learners with a group of non-music learners, they found music students’ brains were developing differently. For example, the young learners’ memory improved over that one year.
Before you start giving up the musical instrument, here’s the good news. Even quitters (放弃者) get some benefits (收益). Instead of losing their abilities completely, children who stopped their lessons keep some of the skills learned by their musical training.
54. Learning music is good for a child’s brain development.
55. Students with years of musical training will possibly do better at mathematics.
56. Kids must have at least one year’s music lessons to see changes in brain development.
57 How long a student learns music has nothing to do with his brain development.
58. Quitters usually lose their abilities completely as soon as they give up.
59. Scientists got the conclusion (结论) by studying a group of six-year-old kids.

There was once a man called Mr. Flowers, and flowers were his only joy in life. He spent all his spare time in one of his four glass-houses and grew flowers of every kind, with l 73 and difficult names. For competitions, he tried to grow a rose of a new c 74 to win the silver cup for the Rose of the Year.
Mr. Flowers’ glass-houses were very close to a middle school. Boys of around thirteen years of age were often tempted (诱使) to throw a stone or t 75 at one of Mr. Flowers’ glass-houses. So Mr. Flowers did his best to be in or close by his glass-houses at the beginning and end of the school day.
But it was not always possible to be on watch at those times. Mr. Flowers had tried in many ways to p 76 his glass, but nothing had been useful. He had tried to drive away the boys when they threw stones into his garden; but the boys could run faster than he did, and they laughed at him from far away. He had e 77 picked up all the stones around his garden, so that the boys would have nothing to throw; but they soon found o 78 .
At last Mr. Flowers had a good idea. He put up a large notice. It was made of good, strong wood. It was some metres away from the glass-houses. On it he had written the words: DO NOT THROW STONES AT THIS NOTICE. After that, Mr. Flowers had no f 79 trouble: the boys were much more tempted to throw stones at the notice than at the glass-houses.
E. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题): (6%)
He knew colors and shapes. He learned about 150 English words. With his language ability, he was known as perhaps the world’s most famous talking bird.
But two weeks ago, Alex, an African Grey Parrot, died of old age. He was 31. Irene Pepperberg, a scientist at Harvard University, studied and worked with the parrot for most of its life.
In 1976, Pepperberg, a doctoral student at Harvard, bought the new-born bird from a pet shop. At that time, scientists didn’t think that any bird could learn to communicate with humans.
Using new ways of teaching, Pepperberg helped Alex to learn about 150 words, and to count small numbers as well as colors and shapes.
In experiments, Pepperberg would ask one trainer to compete (比赛) with Alex for small prizes like a grape. Alex learned to ask for the grape by watching what the trainer was doing to get it. The researchers then worked with the bird to help with pronunciation.
Alex showed a surprising ability to learn. For example, when he was shown a blue triangle (三角形), he could tell what color the paper was, what shape it was, and after touching it—what it was made of.
Like other parrots, he also learned some expressions in the lab such as “calm down” and “Good morning”. He could express feelings like joy and anger. Once during one training class, he suddenly stopped and said: “wanna go eat dinner.”
Even up to the week he died, Alex was working with Pepperberg on hard-to-pronounce words. As she put him in the cage for the night, Alex looked at her and said: “You be good. See you tomorrow. I love you.”
He was found dead in his cage the next morning.

Then the car was driven into the bank’s underground parking lot and left there.
