Step 1 Dictation
Step 2 Leading in and predicting
Show some pictures of Xiejiaji in the past and now. Ss guess where it is.
Ss predict where the people live, what their life is like and what the article is about.
Step 3 Fast reading
Check the prediction and choose the best title for the article.
c) Beijing’s Hutongs
Step 4 Careful Reading
1 Match the headings (a-e) to the correct paragraphs.
(a-D, b-B, c- E, d-A, e-C)
2 Tell the statements true or false.
Step 5 the Task-based Reading
Complete the notes on the article according to the content of the text.

1 Learn reading strategies for summarizing a text.
2 Group work. Ss use the strategies to summarize the main idea of each paragraph and the general idea. Other Ss take notes from their group members’ summaries.
3 Ss use their note to summarize and retell the text. Ask Ss to use their own words as much as possible.
Step 8 Vocabulary (individual work)
Read the given words aloud.
Complete the sentences with the words and translate them into Chinese.
Step 9 Listening for consolidation
Homework: Write a summary of the text(about 100 words), including a title and the most important information.
