1.reward 是新课标重点词汇,用作名词和动词。其中用作名词时要注意和近义词award, prize等词的辨析,这在高考命题中很容易考查的一个考点;
命题人往往把它和heart (learn---by heart; heart and soul等)短语放在一起,也可以与mind, soul, spirit,lose one’s heart to等词、短语进行辨析,2007年陕西卷就这样考查,2010年仍可以进行名词辨析或短语辨析考查
4.动词短语blow up 的多种意思记忆;以及与带up的动词短语,set up; give up; make up; put up; send up; pick up等短语的归类辨析是2010年复习备考的重点

Dorothea Dix left home at an early age—of her own free will—to live with her grandmother.
At fourteen, Dorothea was teaching school at Worcester, Massachusetts. A short time after she had begun teaching, she set up a school for young girls in her grandparents’ home. Stress was placed on moral character at Dorothea’s school, which she conducted until she was thirty-three.
She was forced to give up teaching at her grandparents’ home, however, when she became ill a few years of inactivity followed.
In 1841 Dorothea began to teach again, accepting a Sunday school class in the East Cambridge, Massachusetts prison. Here she first came upon insane people (精神病人) locked up together with prisoners.
In those days insane people were treated even worse than prisoners. There were only a few madhouses in the entire country. Therefore prisons, poor houses, and houses of correction were used to keep the insane.
Dorothea Dix made a careful investigation of the inhuman treatment of the insane. It was considered unfeminine (不适合) for a woman to devote herself to such work at this time. But this did not stop Dorothea Dix from providing proper medical care for the insane.
Gradually, because of her investigations, conditions were improved. More than thirty mental institutions were founded or rebuilt in the United States because of her hard work. Dorothea also spread her investigations to England and to other parts of Europe.
During the Civil War, Dorothea served as superintendent (负责) of women hospital nurses in the Union army. When the war was over, she returned to her work of improving conditions for insane people.

An Earthship is a home that is built of materials such as old tires and aluminum cans. It is the idea of a man named Michael Reynolds. Many Earthships are more or less self-sufficient because they provide their own heat, air and water. They often have gardens watered and fed by waste water. They are comfortable and ecologically friendly.
The main material used in building Earthships is tires. Tires are plentiful and
can't be recycled like paper, plastic, and metal. While building supplies for most houses can be very expensive, old used tires are free.
First, the tires are packed tightly with dirt. Each full tire weighs as much as 400 pounds. The tires are then stacked like bricks. The walls are extremely strong. They also help keep an even temperature in the house (between 60 and 70 degrees) without heating and cooling systems.?
The walls inside the Earthship are made of aluminum cans that are held together by cement. Then they are coated with adobe or stucco.?
The roofs of Earthships are sloped so that rain and snow run into large tanks. These tanks hold all the water for the house, and pumps push the water through the pipes. Sometimes, water flows in certain areas of the house as waterfalls! Water that has been used is pumped out into the gardens where owners grow much of their own food.?
In most of these houses, the southern side has huge windows that take in winter sunlight as a source of heat. Summer sun does not come in through the south windows, so it doesn't get too hot in the summer. The house also has solar panels that gather energy for lights and hot water and cooking. The Earthships have all the comforts of a regular house without the high cost of electric bills!?21世纪教育网
In a time when we are running out of energy resources, pollution is bad, and waste is piling up, Earthships are the best places to live in. For people who truly care about the environment,Earthships provide a great alternative to traditional houses. You won't be giving up any comforts, and the styles are attractive. We all hope that more and more people will build Earthships and take a huge step toward helping the environment and saving our planet.
1.From the passage ,we conclude that________.
A. Earthships are a good way to live and protect the environment.

D. People who live in Earthships usually live in the desert.

A. They were invented by Michael Reynolds.
B. Water that has been used is pumped out into the garden.
C. They are comfortable and ecologically friendly.

4. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

B. the idea of Earthships will attract the attention of governments

D.the northern side of the Earthship has no window?

A. In the future, more and more Earthships will be built.

About 40 percent o高考资源网f the top students in college entrance examinations have chosen overseas universities for their postgraduate studies, according to a survey.
Most of them have stayed overseas after finishing their intended courses, showed a survey that tracked 130 top performers in college entrance exams from 1977 to 1998.
The survey, released on the China Alumni Association website, found it worrying that many of the top students would not stay in China for higher studies despite the country's rapid development in the past few decades.
The government should _______to hold back talented students, said Cai Yanhou, a professor with Central South University in Changsha, capital of Hunan Province.
UNESCO figures show Chinese students comprise 14 percent of international students, the highest in the world. Their favorite destinations for higher studies are the US, Britain and Japan. Some experts said handsome scholarships, better job prospects and more opportunities to pursue further studies are the main attractions of foreign universities.
But Cai, who also led the survey team, said "top in exams" does not necessarily mean "top in career" because the study found none of the top students at college entrance exams had become a top Chinese expert or academic. Some of them are just more adaptable to exam-oriented education than their peers, experts said.
The media fill pages and time slots with their "success" stories to gain wider readership and viewership. High schools promote their former students proudly to attract new ones, and universities want to show their superior status by recruiting them, they said.
Wang hoped future reforms would do away with the score-oriented method so that students can be judged from all aspects.

Attention please, ladies and gentlemen. Our bus is getting close to Cambridge, where we’ll be stopping to eat. We’ll have our lunch in the garden of a restaurant overlooking a small park that reminds people of a very famous tree. It’s said that General George Washington took command of the army in 1775 under its very branches. It was almost 100 years later, in 1864, that the city of Cambridge celebrated the event and from that moment on, the tree was called the Washington Elm. Later the tree was attacked by insects and finally destroyed in a storm. The remains of the tree were cut down and the growth rings were counted to find out how old the tree was. Well, it seems that if Washington had accepted the command of his army under this tree be must have done so on his knees. This particular elm couldn’t have been over 3 or 4 years old in 1775. It is a well – known fact that Washington took command under an elm tree, but unfortunately it couldn’t have been the famous Washington Elm.
Well, enjoy your lunch. Watch your step as you leave the bus.
