We find that bright children are seldom held back by mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming(按能力分班) pupils. It does not consider the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have had effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright children. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be the bottom of the top grade.
Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual(智力) ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We care much about the development of all the pupils’ abilities to the full, not just their study ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching does good to these aspects of learning.
In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups; this gives them the chance to learn to work together, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to deal with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze(分析) an devaluate(评价) and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teachers.
Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual(个人) tasks, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is proper. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this well. An advanced pupil can do advanced work and it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to achieve this goal.

Eat, drink and be merry. That’s what Spring Festival is all about. But there are millions of people, too, who love to let happiness go up in smoke.
Offering cigarettes to guests is a traditional Chinese way of showing respect to them. A cup of tea and cigarettes are perhaps the most common way of welcoming a guest in China, especially during festive occasions.
No wonder, 40 percent of the people surveyed(调查) recently said they would smoke at least twice the usual number of cigarettes during the Spring Festival because of all those gatherings and parties. Only 20 percent of the respondents said they would refuse a cigarette when offered one. Why can’t the others do the same? Because they could be seen as being rude, said more than half in the respondents. 15 percent feared they could be taken as “someone who cannot get along well with others”.
The Think-tank Research Centre for Health Development and sohu. com survey shows 61 percent Chinese think offering a cigarette is useful for socialising, and 52 percent have offered cigarettes to others. The study surveyed 3,800 people, and 64 percent of them were men.
One-third of those surveyed were smokers, out of which 57 percent said they couldn’t give up smoking because of the offering-and-accepting culture. “People have accepted offering cigarettes as an effective way of making friends,” research centre director Wu Yiqun says.
China has more than 350 million smokers, catering to the tobacco market that is worth 500 billion yuan. “The survey shows we still have a lot of work to do,” Wu says. “It is time to let people know that offering a cigarette is a bad habit and it should be given up immediately.”

61. Which of the following may NOT be the reason that makes many people fail to refuse the offered cigarettes?
A. It’s impolite to refuse. B. Smoking is harmful for non-smokers.

62. The writer mentions the 500 billion yuan tobacco market because ________.

Recently some American scientists have given a useful sincere piece of advice to people in industrialized nations that they would be much healthier if they ate more of the same kind of food eaten by humans living more than 10,000 years ago.
The scientists say that the human body has changed very little since humans first appeared on the earth, but the way we live has changed greatly. Our body has not been able to deal with these changes in life style and this has led to new kinds of sicknesses. These new sicknesses were not known in ancient times, so they are called “diseases of civilization”. Many cancers and diseases of the blood system, including heart attacks and strokes ( 中风 ) are examples of such diseases.
Scientists noted that people in both the Old Stone Age and the New Stone Age enjoyed very little alcohol or tobacco, probably none. Ancient people also got a great deal of physical exercise, but a change in food is one of the main differences between life in ancient times and that of today.
Stone-age people hunted wild animals for their meat, which had much less fat than domestic or tame ones ( 家畜 ). They also ate a lot of fresh wild vegetables and fruits. They didn’t have milk or any other dairy products, and they made very little use of grains. But today, we eat a large amount of these. We eat six times more salt than our remote ancestors. We eat more sugar. We eat twice as much fat but only one third as much protein and much less vitamin C.
People today probably do not want to live the way people thousands of years ago did, but scientists say that we would be much healthier if we ate much the same way as remote ancestors did, cutting the amount of fatty, salty and sweet food.
67. What is the main cause that people suffer from a lot of new sicknesses?
A. Ancient people did a great deal of physical exercise.
B. People today have a lot of alcohol.
C. People today have more tobacco.
D. Food today is quite different from that of ancient times.
68. Which of the following belongs to the dairy products?
A. Milk B. Corn C. Pork D. Flour
69. New kinds of sicknesses have been found because ________.
A. the human body has changed compared with humans who first appeared on the earth
B. the way we live has changed a little
C. our body can’t deal with the changes in life style
D. the way we live today is proper for the human body
70. According to some scientists, Stone-age people were much healthier than people today because they ate a lot of ________.
A. milk and other dairy products B. salt and sugar
C. wild animals, fresh wild vegetables and fruits D. grain foods

第二节 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下面短文, 并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。
注意:每空1个单词。
Have you laughed today? Good thing if you have because most people take life too seriously.
Those who laugh are healthier because laughing helps them loosen up. Although it causes the pulse to quicken initially, it slows down considerably, so that blood pressure sinks.
“The skeletal muscles(骨骼肌) relax and the overall result is better circulation to the muscles,” says psychologist Michael Titze, chairman of Humor Care in Tuttlingen, Germany, and a researcher into laughter.
Laughing also helps to break down stress hormones and build up those associated with happiness. It also helps to increase the immune defenses in the bloodstream, including those that help the body protect itself from cancer and heart disease. The antibody-containing immunoglobulin (免疫球蛋白) in the saliva(唾液), which helps prevent germ from attacking respiratory organs(呼吸器官), also rises.
“Laughing, among other things, tenses the muscles in the eye and activates positive emotions in the brain,” says Titze, adding that laughter is an expression of pure deliverance and total tension release. “Through laughter we abandon self control.”
The expert therefore advocates looking for things that arouse laughter in daily life and activating the laugh reflex.
“Laughing creates a good mood and that in turn introduces hearty and intense laughter,” Titze says.
Today, though, this is difficult for many people.
“Laughing demands a bit of courage,” says Claudia Madelaine Zimmer of a club in Leipzig devoted to laughing. To a certain degree, the discipline needed to raise children wears down the ability to have fun. People fear losing their authority by having fun or doing something interesting. However, people with humor not only live more healthily, they are also better at solving conflicts, she believes.
But because it's often difficult to have a good laugh, people all over the world are joining laughing clubs. Zimmer says such clubs meet regularly, and do “laugh yoga”. This sends more laughter in the streets, not because the laughter exercises are so funny, but because it's actually a way to practice laughing.
The goal is to laugh without reason or inhibition. This seems artificial at first but with a bit of training people can learn “to go into natural laughter from collective, intentional laughter”. And because you can scarcely think about it while in laughter training, the relaxation is all the greater.

Dear sir,
Recently our class has held a heated discussion on our new entrance examination programme. Opinions are divided into two parts.
About 70% of the students support it. They think the new programme is quite popular with them and so far great progress has been made in it. What’s more, it can balance all subjects, which makes students more interested in their favourite subjects according to their own interests and hobbies.
However, about 30% of them hold the opposite opinions. The reasons are as follows. Firstly, students have to devote themselves to all subjects and therefore it is a heavy burden for students. Secondly, some students who fail in a subject are not admitted to universities. Besides, it is a little difficult for students and their parents to understand the programme completely.
In my opinion, the new programme has a good effect on our education reform. But the education leaders should listen to different voices from teachers and students. Besides, we’d better learn from the exam programme in other areas.
I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Ming

M: Let’s see now. Which train do I need to get on?
W: Excuse me. Do you need any help?
M: Yes. I want to go to Tokyo Tower, but I’m really lost. This is my first time to visit Japan, so I have no idea of how to take the train.
W: First, you need to buy a ticket to your destination. From here, it’s a hundred and thirty yuan.
M: A hundred and thirty yuan. OK.
W: Then get on the Subway Line at Platform No.4.
M: No. 4, all right. Oh, and how often do the trains come around this time of day?
W: Usually, they come about every six minutes or so.
M: All right. And where do I get off the train?

W: No problem. Good luck.

Text 10
Mr. Smith works in an office. He’s very busy and has no time to have a good rest. Every evening, when he comes back from work, he’s always tired and wants to go to bed early. But his wife has a lot of interesting things to tell him after supper. She doesn’t stop talking until she falls asleep, but it’s usually very late and Mr. Smith has to get up on time in the morning when she is asleep.
One day the man felt terrible and couldn’t go to work. He decided to see a doctor. Mrs. Smith went to the hospital with him. Before her husband could say what the matter was with him, the woman had told the doctor everything. The doctor looked over Mr. Smith and then gave medicine to both Mr. and Mrs. Smith. He said to Mrs. Smith, “They are both sleeping pills. When you take the pills, your husband will be all right.”
