“Please, Farmer, sir, I am a stork. I come from a good family that is honest and true. I went along with the cranes, but I had no idea they were going to steal from you,” the bird said.

Woody Guthrie left California for New York in 1940. There he met Alan Lomax, an expert on America’s traditional music. He collected and recorded traditional American folk music, which had few fans at that time. When he heard Woody sing, Lomax knew he had found a true singer of American folk music. Lomax recorded many of Woody’s songs for the Library of Congress.
Three years later, Woody published a book called Bound for Glory. It was about his early life and travels. From this book people came to learn how Woody had spent his unhappy youth. His mother, Nora Guthrie, died of Huntington’s Disease (亨廷顿氏病) in 1929 when he was seventeen years old. There was no treatment for the disease. About twenty years later, the disease also began to attack the son. Woody’s health got worse and worse, and finally he entered a hospital.
While Woody seemed to be forgotten, his music was not. By the late 1950s, folk music became popular in America. More Americans began listening and playing the songs of Woody Guthrie. Young folk singers came to New York to visit Woody in the hospital. Among them was Bob Dylan, one of America’s greatest popular songwriters. He called Woody his hero. Dylan and others copied the way Woody sang and played the guitar. And like Woody, they wrote songs that called for social and political justice (公平).
Woody Guthrie stayed in the hospital until he died in 1967. In the last years of his life, Woody could hardly speak. But his family and friends knew he still believed in the causes he had sung and written about all his life. They knew this because when they sang his songs, Woody’s eyes would become brighter and his defiant (叛逆的) spirit would shine through.

A young man named Matt Vongsykeo, 14, has saved a baby from the wreckage (残骸) of a car. The four-month-old baby boy, found hanging in his capsule (襁褓) when Vongsykeo climbed into the car in Melbourne’s Springvale, escaped serious injury and was taken to hospital.
But the child’s 33-year-old mother, from Endeavour Hills, died in hospital following last night’s high speed crash, which left three other people injured.
A car on the wrong side of the road is thought to have been traveling at well over 100 kph when it hit three other vehicles. Vongsykeo said he heard the crash from his house and found a Holden Jackaroo rushed against a brick wall. He heard a baby crying.
“There were two grown men standing outside the car and they couldn’t get in, so I had to climbed in and get the baby out,” he said. “I had to do it quickly because there was a window below me and I was afraid that was going to break.”
Vongsykeo told how he took out the baby in his arms and called to see if there was anyone else in the car. He found the baby’s mother unconscious (无意识的).
“I thought she was dead so I just rushed out.” he said. “She entered consciousness later on and I went around and started talking to her and getting her to talk to me and stay with me.”
He said he comforted the mother and told her baby was safe.

England, France, and Switzerland all played elec-tronic music at the 1967 world’s fair (博览会), held in Canada. They used it as background music for their exhibits.
What exactly is electronic music? Sounds are produced not on common musical instruments but with electronic ones. Electro-magnetic vibrations (电磁震动) are changed into sound waves.
Electronic music is not new. It first began to amaze listeners in the early 1900s. They thought the new music strange. They said it was music for a haunted (闹鬼的) house.
Electronic music developed at different speeds in different parts of the world. In 1906, an American invented a telharmonium, which made use of alternating electrical currents (交流电). In Russia, Leon Theremin, a physicist-musician, invented the boxlike instrument that bears his name. Musicians stood in front of the instrument and waved their hands in the air.
Electronic music continued developing. In 1948 “Concrete music” was first played. It was put forward by a French engineer, Pierre Schaeffer. Street noises, radio commercials, conversation, and other sounds were recorded on tapes. The tapes were then run backward. Different kinds of sounds were produced when the speed of the tape was made faster or slower.
In 1955, the electronic synthesizer (音响合成器) was invented. Looking something like a combination between a piano and a computer, the synthesizer can produce all the tones that the human ear can hear.
Many people question whether these different sounds are music. Experts say we must get used to new sounds before we can enjoy them. Today, some listeners say they enjoy the new music very much.
48. This passage mainly tells us about ______.
A. the history of electronic music
B. all kinds of pop music
C. people who question the new sounds
D. musical instruments which change history
49. According to the passage the theremin refers to ______.
A. musical work

D. a Russian physicist-musician
50. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Few listeners enjoy the new music very much.
B. Electronic music cannot be used for background music.
C. Russian engineers get more ideas than French engineers do.
D. Electronic music has a history of about 100 years.
51. Concrete music was the idea of ______.
A. a Russian composer
B. a Canadian musician

If you traveled back in time with your library card, hoping to check out some ancient books, you would discover that libraries were quite different long ago. Books were few and valuable, and no librarians encouraged you to take them home. In fact, you would get in trouble if you did!
Five thousand years ago in Mesopotamia, the Sumerians tied their clay tablets (土制简册) together with string and stored them in baskets. Librarians called the Keepers of the Tablets carefully guarded the books, and you would not be able to check them out because they were so fragile (易碎的). If you think it is bad to have kept a book longer than the date when you should have returned it to the library, imagine having to face an angry keeper after breaking a clay tablet! At about the same time in history, Egyptians kept scrolls (卷轴) in the temples, but the common Egyptian never saw those books and surely couldn’t take them home!
One other place you would probably visit on a tour of ancient libraries was the great Chinese Imperial (帝国的) Library in the Forbidden City, which belonged to the Emperor of China. However, this library wasn’t at all like our public libraries today. If you were a commoner, you couldn’t even go into the Forbidden City. If you did manage to jump over its high walls and into the library, the Imperial librarians would certainly summon the guards to get rid of you! In the library, the emperor studied selections from his 36,000 books. Few Chinese people could read the books 5,000 years ago.
The Greeks handled things differently. They gave everyone the chance to borrow books because they loved learning. Their libraries contained scrolls on all subjects from mathematics to myths. They built the greatest library in the world in Alexandria. Alexandria was on the northern coast of Egypt, and the great library of Alexandria existed for more than 900 years. It contained over 700,000 scrolls, which equaled 100,000 modern books. The librarians wanted their library to have a copy of every book ever written, so soldiers searched all the ships that came into the port. When the soldiers found books, they took them!
52. The underlined word “summon” in Paragraph 3 means “______”.
A. invite B. order
C. allow D. greet
53. Who were easier to read a book in ancient time?
A. The Sumerians. B. The Greeks.
C. The Egyptians. D. The Chinese.
54. Alexandria’s library was special because ______.
A. all the books inside it were taken by force
B. the books inside it were the earliest copies
C. it had quite a large collection of books at that time
D. it had the valuable copy of books at that time
55. This passage is written to tell us that ______.
A. why it was difficult to borrow books in ancient time
B. what the libraries were like in ancient time
C. how different the ancient libraries are from the modern ones
D. what the books were made of in ancient time

One possible version:
Traditional Chinese music is played with traditional instruments such as pipa, erhu, suona, guzheng, huqin, etc. The songs are mainly about love, life and news. Some songs tell us legends long long ago. And they are often handed down from generation to generation. In the past, the best chance to hear it was during a festival or at a wedding.
Modern Chinese music, on the other hand, is played with drums, guitars and keyboard. Some songs use traditional instruments as well. The young musicians and stars write new songs and people can enjoy them all the time over the radio, on TV or even in the street.
One thing that hasn’t changed very much is that they both are about love and life. Whether they change or not, our love for music and life never changes.
