Muscles (肌肉) are important for running, jumping, and lifting. Most of our muscles are hidden under our skin. But one of the most important muscles is easy to see. Can you guess which one it is? Here are some clues:
It helps us move food around in our mouths.
It helps us form words.
It helps us taste food.
It helps us clean teeth.
If you guess the tongue, you are right!
Go to a mirror and stick out your tongue. Those bumps (凸块) are called papillae (舌乳头). Each of the papillae contains many taste buds (味蕾).
We have up to 10,000 taste buds. The number of taste buds can be different in each person, but girls usually have more than boys.
Taste buds tell you whether food is salty, sweet, sour (酸的), or bitter. You taste salty and sour on the sides of your tongue. You taste bitter food near the back, and sweet food on the tip.
Your tongue works with your nose to taste different flavors. Nerves in your taste buds send “taste” messages to your brain. Your nose sends “smell” messages. The brain then tells you which food you are eating.
36. How many taste buds do we have according to the passage?
A. About 100. B. About 1,000.
C. About 10,000. D. About 100,000.
37. What does the underlined word “flavors” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Foods. B. Tastes.
C. Flowers. D. Vegetables.
38. What can we know from the passage?
A. Papillae help us clean our teeth.
B. All people have the same number of taste buds.
C. Boys have fewer taste buds than girls.
D. It is on the tip of your tongue that you taste sour.
39. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. One important muscle
B. How to taste food
C. How many taste buds we have
D. One way to clean teeth

Does your daughter really think that she has a problem making new friends or is she worried that she doesn’t have any or enough friends? If so, then there are a few solutions.
Try to take some time to teach your daughter some social skills or even role-play like you are her friend if she needs to know how to handle a certain situation. Teach her to go up to someone bravely and start talking — this is always a good idea to make new friends.
Try to encourage her to invite a friend over to go to see a movie together in the afternoon. Let her plan the afternoon, with your approval (同意) of course, as she will know what she and the friend may want to do, like sit around and talk, watch TV, etc. Don’t plan the time for her when a friend comes over as you need to remember she is growing up and she needs her own space and time with a friend.
If she likes to play baseball, encourage her to sign up (报名参加) to play on a team either at school or away from school because she can make friends with other girls, and she will have something in common with them.
Sometimes your daughter may make a wrong choice in a friend and you’ll need to work this out with her. Don’t make negative (消极的) comments in front of her friend. Wait until she has left the home, then sit down with your daughter and discuss the reasons you don’t think this girl should be her friend or be invited to your home.
Always try to have her invite new friend to your home so that you can see the quality of that person and make good decisions on your daughter’s friendship.

There once was a little bird. He sang and flew around but had no manners and read no books. The king said, “This bird is no good. He doesn’t do anything except eat fruit in the garden.” He called his nephew and told him, “Give the bird some education!”
The king’s nephew immediately ordered some wise men to find out why the bird was so uneducated. They concluded (作出结论) that the problem was that the bird’s nest (巢) was made of grass, so the first thing to do was to make a new cage out of the best materials. Soon a famous goldsmith (金匠) was brought to build a cage of gold. The king’s nephew then brought in textbook writers to make copies of books, and soon the bird had a mountain of books to read. Now everyone said, “Good! This is what we call education!”
One day, the king came to visit the bird’s education center. He was fully satisfied and rewarded his nephew handsomely.
However, in the cage there was no food or water. Instead, pages were being torn from books and pushed into the bird’s mouth with one end of a pen. Everyone felt that things were on the right track.
Then one day, the bird died. The news spread. The king wanted to know what had happened, so he called for his nephew. The nephew said, “Your Majesty (陛下), the bird’s education is now finished.”
The king asked, “Does he jump anymore?”
“Thank God, no, Your Majesty.”
“Does he fly?”
“No, Your Majesty.”
“Does he cry when hungry?”
“No, Your Majesty.”
The king said, “Bring the bird. I wish to see him.”
The king prodded (戳) the bird with his finger. The bird made no noise, except for that of the dry pages packed into his stomach.

Zoolander (《名模大间谍》)
Everything about Zoolander just makes you laugh! It’s so funny that you want to watch it again to write down the lines. I wouldn’t advise it for children under 13, though, because of some of the content (内容) and language. The main character, Derek Zoolander, is played by Ben Stiller. He is probably the best part of the movie because he is pretty much a “Model Idiot”.
Chicago
Based on the Broadway show, Chicago is a musical, but it is really different from other musicals. Many other musical films fail to create an easy-to-follow storyline or include actual acting. The actors in Chicago sing a number of great songs. They also create such wonderful and believable characters that almost anyone can enjoy this movie. The dancing is also excellent, and the singing and dancing are smartly added throughout. You are never tired of its much music, because there are no boring moments when you wish they would include a song.
Flags of Our Fathers
Three men in World War II, John “Doc” Bradley, Rene Gagnon, and Ira Hayes, have a famous picture taken of them while putting up an American flag after occupying (占领) a hill near a Japanese beach at the battle (战役) of Iwo Jima. What no one back home knows is that this is a replacement flag because the commander wanted to keep the actual flag. These three men were being sent home for putting up the replacement flag. Now they remember this when they are 80 years old.
Night at the Museum
Night at the Museum is a great movie, although nothing like I expected. Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Robin Williams all do good jobs with their roles. This movie is pretty different from others these actors have been in — the exhibitions at the American Museum of Natural History in New York come alive after hours. It is true that there is an adventure in this movie, so if you’re looking for action and humor, spend a “Night at the Museum”.
48. According to the passage, if you are only ten years old, you’d better not watch ______.
A. Night at the Museum B. Zoolander
C. Flags of Our Fathers D. Chicago
49. What can we learn about Chicago from the passage?
A. The music in the film is too much that you’ll feel tired of it.
B. The film is the same as the other musical films.
C. Singing and dancing play an important role in the film.
D. There is only one song in the film but the dancing is good.
50. Which of the following is TRUE about Flags of Our Fathers?
A. The three men took the photo about eighty years ago.
B. The three men put up an American flag on a hill near a Japanese beach.
C. The three men were sent home because they were hurt in a battle.
D. The three men took the photo with an actual flag.
51. From the passage we can know that Ben Stiller acts in ______.
A. Chicago and Zoolander
B. Chicago and Night at the Museum
C. Zoolander and Night at the Museum
D. Flags of Our Fathers and Chicago

Let us suppose it is now about AD 2060. Let’s make believe it is about 53 years from now. Of course, things have changed, and life is very different.
Voyages to the moon are being made every day. It is easy to take a holiday on the moon today while it was hard for the people of the 1960s to take a holiday in Europe. At a number of places of interest on the moon, many hotels have been built. The hotels have air conditioners, TV sets, iceboxes and so on, naturally. In order that everyone can enjoy the beautiful scenery on the moon, every room has at least one picture window. Everything imaginable is provided for entertainment of both young and old. Everybody can have a good time there.
What are people eating now? People are still eating food. But many foods now come in pill form, and the food that goes into the pill continues to come mainly from green plants. The deserts on our planet are irrigated (灌溉) with water. Crops are no longer destroyed by pests. The harvest is always good.
Farming, of course, is very highly developed. Very few people have to work on the farm. It is possible to run a farm by just pushing a few buttons now and then.
People are now largely vegetarians (素食者). You see, as the number of people increased, the number of animals decreased. Therefore, the people have to be vegetarians and we are healthier in both our bodies and our minds, and we know the causes of sickness and pain, and the ways to cure (治愈) diseases. No one has to be ill any more.
Such might be our life in 2060.
52. The underlined word “Voyages” (in Paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to “______”.
A. Sailing B. Planning
C. Looking D. Traveling
53. According to the last paragraph, why don’t people eat meat in AD 2060?
A. Animals are unhealthy to be eaten.
B. Doctors tell people not to eat meat.
C. The number of animals decreased.
D. People dislike eating meat.
54. Which of the following is NOT true about people’s life in 2060?
A. Life in 2060 is very different from now.
B. Everything in the hotels on the moon is only provided for the young.
C. People are still eating food.
D. People won’t get ill any longer.
55. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. What life is like in AD 2060.
B. It is easy to take a holiday on the moon in AD 2060.
C. The harvest is always good in AD 2060.
D. No one has to be sick any more in AD 2060.

National Stadium, which covers 258,000 square meters and holds 91,000 seats, is located in Olympic Green in Beijing. Seen from the top, it looks as if the stadium is covered by a gray net of steel, and it looks just like a bird’s nest made of tree branches. The spaces in the structure of the stadium are filled with huge plastic bags full of air. Although the stadium is made of concrete and steel, the flowing lines and round shapes make the building look warm and friendly. The stadium is to stage sports events at national and international levels, as well as cultural and entertaining activities.
