China's Basketball 3rd-class Without Yao Ming
Hu Jiashi, China Basketball Administration Center vice director, said in an interview on October 8 that the goal for the national basketball team was a gold in this year's Asian Games and that the team would be only third-class without Yao Ming, the Yanzhao Metropolis News reported Monday.
Although China failed to reach the eight finals in the 2006 Basketball World Championship that ended last September, rumors are flying that the BAC has framed a medal-winning plan in 2008.
Hu denied the rumors yesterday, saying the bottom line for the Olympic Games would be eighth place.
He confirmed that the gold is the aim for men's and women's national basketball team in the upcoming Asian Cup to be held in Doha, Qatar.
"The men's basketball team lost the gold in the previous Asian Games and last year's East Asian Games, so it's very important to recapture the lost gold medal for building spiritual strength for the teams," he said.
Hu said he agreed with the national basketball team coach Jonas Kazlauskas that it would be a great loss to the Chinese team if Yao Ming couldn't attend the Asian Games, adding that the Chinese men's basketball team would only be a third-class team without Yao.
However, Hu believed it would be a good opportunity for other team members to perform harder and play more important roles on the team.
According to Hu, Wang Zhizhi and Yi Jianlian would be included in the team for the Asian Games.
Hu spoke highly of Jonas Kazlauskas, who previously headed the Lithuanian national team and took the Chinese team last year, regarding his competence and methods on managing the team.

When Lew Alcindor was 13, and obviously still growing, a group of schools began offering him scholarships. The Alcindors decided to send their only child to Power Memorial Academy, a small school on Manhattan’s West Side.
At Power, Alcindor came under the control of Coach Jack Donohue, a strict young man who already gained his fame as one of the best coaches in the city. Donohue brought Alcindor along slowly. As a first-year student, the boy was not able to do much but wave his long skinny arms and shoot a basket now and then. But by the second year, when he was 15 years old and nearly 7 feet tall, Alcindor was quick and skillful enough to make the high school All-America team and to lead Power to an undefeated season.
From then on he simply got better. Some rival coaches used to take their teams quickly away from the floor before Power warmed up so that their players would not see him any sooner than they had to. Wearing size 16D shoes and sucking a lollipop(棒棒糖), Alcindor would loosen up by starting his leaping lay-ups(擦板球). Then he would casually shoot the ball with either hand, to the delight of the fans.
When reporters and photographers began to follow Alcindor closely, Donohue protected his boy firmly. He simply ordered Lew to talk to no member of the press, and this suited Lew fine. He was not comfortable talking to grown-ups, perhaps because he towered over them. Discouraged photographers began following him in secret as though he were an easily-frightened giraffe. Once after ducking into a subway to escape, Alcindor told a friend that it was all becoming like policemen and robbers. “People want you not for yourself,” Donohue warned him, “but because you’re a basketball player. Don’t forget that.”
42.Why was Alcindor able to make the high school All-America team?
A. Because he was young
B. Because he was hardworking
C. Because he was tall for his age
D. Because he was quick and skillful at playing basketball
43.Which of the following best describes Donohue as a young coach?
A. serious, popular and slow
B. tall, skillful and successful
C. kind, powerful and undefeated
D. well-known, strict and experienced
44.Why did some rival coaches take their teams away from the floor before Power warmed up?
A. Their teams refused to play Power
B. Their teams feared to see Alcindor
C. Their teams would lose courage
D. Their teams would lose interest.
45. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. A famous basketball coach
B. How the play basketball well.
C. An excellent young basketball player.
D. Playing basketball.
IV.阅读表达(共五小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
Basketball is one of the few sports whose exact origin is definitely known. In the winter of 1891-1892, Dr. James Naismith, an instructor in the YMCA Training College (now Springfield college) at Springfield, Mass., deliberately invented the game of basketball in order to provide indoor exercise and competition for the students between the closing of the football season and the opening of the baseball season. He affixed peach baskets overhead on the walls at opposite ends of the gymnasium and organized teams to play his new game in which the purpose was to toss an association(soccer) ball into the other basket. Because Dr. Naismith had eighteen available players when he invented the game, the first rule was:” There shall be nine players on each side.” Later the number of players became optional, _____ the size of the available court, but the five-plyer standard was adopted when the game spread over the country. US soldiers brought basketball to Europe in World War I, and it soon became a worldwide sport.
