Grammar---Compound words and articles
Teaching objectives:
1. Get the students to know as many compound words as possible.
2. Have a review of some usages of the articles they have known before.
3. Teach some new rules about the usages of the articles.
4. While teaching grammars, try to make them practice speaking and communicating in English.

Step I: Grammar one—compound words
Lead in: Hello everybody! Now let’s begin our lesson. Look at the screen. What can you see Sure you know them. But when I put the two words together. What can we get A compound word. That is right. Do you know what this word mean Can you guess …It doesn’t matter. I tell you. It means the method of writing quickly, esp. using some special symbols. In Chinese we can say 速记,速写。
Activity1: Compound words remembering
Later you will see some words flashing on the screen. Try your best to remember them in shorthand. The quicker, the better. Now, let’s get started. …….Now tell me the words you can remember. Keyboard, software, hardware, high-speed, CD-ROM, search engine, credit card, text message, video camera, internal cal, computer system, international call, mobile phone. (13words). You have so good a memory. Now read after me. Have you got some new words here No, excellent!
Activity2: Put the compound words into three types
For each compound noun, they have different forms. Can you put them in right type You know there are three types pf compound nouns according to the ways of forming. Now who can tell me
Type1: CD-ROM, high-speed
Type2: keyboard, software, hardware
Type3: search engine, credit card, text message, video camera, internal cal, computer system, international call, mobile phone
Activity3: Match the words in the two boxes
Look at the words in the two boxes. Match them. Try to get as many compound nouns as possible. You can work in groups of four. Just for one minute. Now check your answers. (Is the word right Is there any new word for you ) (hardware, hardboard, hard disk; keyboard, keyword; website, web browser; network, notebook, notepad, software)
Activity4: Compound words competition
I know you have learnt some compound words before. So now let’s have a competition. Boys one group, girls the other group. For everybody, you can come to the front to write down the compound words you know. I just give you two minutes. But meanwhile, pay attention to your handwriting. (Is there any new word here Who wrote it Tell us what it means.)
For another competition. Each group, choose one student to come to the blackboard, other students explain the word in simple English for him or her to guess. ( Group A: women teacher, earthworm, peace-loving, sleeping pills, high-rise, half-brother, get-together, absent-minded, color-blind, outgoing, chewing-gum, paper-cut, overcoat, sleepwalker; Group B: good-looking, easygoing, left-hand, paper tiger, good-tempered, passer-by, quick-minded, ever-green, shorthand, go-between, kind-hearted, airsick, mother-in-law, sports stadium.) The more, the better. For each group, two minutes. Now let’s begin. Who is the first, ladies or gentlemen Lady first. Great!... Now let’s see who is the winner Congratulations.
Activity5: Change some compound nouns into plural forms

Step II: articles—the definite articles, the indefinite articles and zero articles
Lead in: sometimes nouns exist in plural forms, but sometimes nouns can be modified by some other words. Do you know what words we can put before a noun Adjectives, pronouns, articles… Great! Activity1: Homework check for the rules of how to use articles
Look at the words here. Why do we have “the” here (the Internet, the World Wide Web, the head teacher, the universe , the world, the sun, the official language, the moon, the president, the capital, the sky, the atmosphere) Because they are all unique. Quite right. That is one rule for the articles. Can you tell me more ……
Activity2: Something more about the articles for the students to pay attention to.
Articles are so hard to master. There is something you should pay attention to. Follow me please. 1. Translate the following phrases, paying attention to the different preps. .( take/catch sb. by the arm; hit sb. in the face/ on the head; wound sb. in the leg; pat sb. on the shoulder)
2. They are all proper nouns. Right But there are some differences between them. Have you noticed that Now can you tell me why ( Answers: the用在某些由普通名词构成的国家名称、机关团体、阶级、等专有名词前, 纯专有名词前一般不用the. )
3. Discuss the following phrases, paying attention to the differences of the definite articles.
