Chinese can now visit Ireland and see shamrocks for themselves. The two countries’ governments agreed on this last week.
Ireland is on an island in northwestern Europe, next to England. Dublin, the capital, is its largest city.
When people think of Ireland, they think of green plants all over it. In fact, one name for Ireland is the “Emerald Isle(翡翠岛)”.
There are lots of old castles on Ireland’s hills, and people tell old stories about them.
Ireland is also famous for its folk music and art. The country is known for its harp(竖琴) and flute(长笛) music. Ireland also has some fun dances.
Lots of Irish moved to America around 1850 because they were starving. The Irish eat lots of potatoes. But at that time potatoes there were dying.

These simple ways can increase your popularity(受欢迎度) and win you more friends, so why not try them?
● FOCUSING ON OTHERS This will reduce any shyness you may have. You’ll be more relaxed and therefore more natural and fun. And you will get more good---people will love the fact that you’re paying attention to them while you don’t have to worry about what people think of you.
● LOOKING PEOPLE IN THE EYE Making eye contact is very important because it shows you’re interested in them. If you let your eyes wander or keep looking over their shoulder, people will feel slighted, and they’ll like you less they would otherwise.
● ASKING QUESTIONS Doing this gives you two advantages. It shows other people that you are indeed paying attention and that you consider what they are telling you important. Being sure to follow up when you’ve shared a conversation with someone about something important in his/her life, be sure to ask about it later. This shows that you listen and you care.
● MAKING AN EFFORT TO SMILE A smile means acceptance, and that makes people open up to you. Make a conscious(有意识的) effort(努力) one day to smile at the people you stay or work with and watch how well they respond to you.
● BEING RELIABLE People appreciate those who help them, and they quickly begin to hate those who don’t.
43. By fixing your attention on others, you will ______.
 A. be more worried and tired B. feel more confident
C. be paid less attention to D. feel less liked
44. The underlined word means “_______”
A. believable B. unbelievable C. acceptable D. helpful
45. Which is the best title for this passage?
A. Ways to Make You More Natural B. Trying to Be a Polite Person
C. Making as Many Friends as Possible D. Ways to Make You More Popular
D
Colour helps you see things. But man and some monkeys and apes (猿) are the only mammals that can see colour. To any other mammal, such as the dog, the world looks like a black-and-white photo. Dogs hunt mainly by listening and sniffing (闻).
Like other animals, dogs see best when things move, The animals they hunt seem to know this. A hunted rabbit or deer will “freeze”. Then the dog may not see it at all.
Birds can see colour. They need to, because they fly and need to find places to land. Colour helps them judge distance and shape. In this way they are able to catch bugs (昆虫) in the air or to light on branches.
Some birds see things even better than you do. The birds that eat bugs can see them from far away. And even a very young bird can see a hawk high in the sky. So sharp eyes and a sense of colour help birds find food and also help them find where their enemies are.
46. ______ can see colour.
A. All the animals B. All the mammals
C. Man and dogs D. Birds and monkeys
47. In order to find their food, dogs mainly use their ______.
A. eyes and noses B. ears and noses
C. eyes and ears D. mouths and ears
48. The word “freeze” in the passage means ______.
the hunted animals are frozen on the ground because of cold weather
B. the hunted animals’ temperature is becoming lower and lower until it drops below 0℃
C. the hunted animals will stop running and stay in the same place without movement
D. the hunted animals are so frightened that they can’t move any longer
49. Colour helps birds ______.

Albert found school very difficult. Albert always had to think about many things before he could answer. When his teacher wasn’t asking Albert a question, Albert would think of a question to ask her. The more Albert learned, the more he found to think about. The more he thought about, the more questions he thought of to ask.
Albert Einstein thought and thought until he believed that he had some of the answers. And then people started asking him questions because he had answers for many things that scientists had been trying to figure out for many, many years.
