Stressing syllables and wordsWord stress
In the English language, all words of more than one syllable have
what is called word stress. This means at least one of the syllables
is longer and louder than the other syllables ,You should learn
word stress as you learn new vocabulary.
2. Sentence stress
Sentence stress is like word stress and is what gives English its
rhythm. When we are speaking, we stress certain key words in a
sentence. For example , in the sentence ‘I went to the shop to
buy apples’, we stress the words ‘shop’ and ‘apples’ as these are
the most important information. We do not usually stress the
grammar elements of a sentence.Underline the words we should stress when
