让学生了解英国和美国学校生活,并和中国的学校生活相比较,让学生了解不同国家中等学校不同的教育的体系和教育体制。同时通过对英美国家中学生的学校生活的了解,激发他们学习英语的兴趣,并通过本单元的学习,掌握了一些有关学科的名称和对其描述的形容词,复习和巩固了形容词原级、比较级和最高级的用法。通过本单元的整体学习,使学生在听说读写各个方面的能力得以提高。

对于中学的学校生活,学生是熟悉并感兴趣的,尤其是了解国外中学生的学校生活并和他们自己的学校生活相比较,更是他们津津乐道的事。在中国,八年级的学生所学的学科基本全了,因此在此基础上学用英语表达,学生比较容易接受。同时学习形容词原级、比较级和最高级的用法,对与他们来说也能理解和接受。因而本单元的学习并不困难。教师在教学过程中可采用Role playing, Practicing, Cooperating, Scanning和Listening for specific information的学习策略,利用教学挂图,制作多媒体课件来开展个人表演、两人一组表演或更多的学生一起分角色表演。在教词汇时,教师可以在找一些学生学过的单词来比较英式英语和美式英语在单词拼写或读音上的区别。通过分角色扮演模仿对话或用关键词来复述课文可以培养学生的听力和口语水平,让学生在听录音或同学叙述时,学会获取主要的信息来帮助自己理解和记忆。在阅读过程中,让学生学会写关键词语,复述短文,模仿编写对话等,以提高学生的阅读水平。在语法教学过程中,让学生自己通过学习总结规律,模仿操练,让学生真正掌握语法知识并能灵活运用。

Step 1 Showing a world map
Get the students to know the English-speaking countries around the world, by showing a world map to them. Meanwhile write the name of different English-speaking countries in the world. Let the students know the differences between British and American English.
Step 2 Matching the two words that refer to the same things
Tell the students that people use different words to talk about the same things. Ask the students to open their books and match the two words that refer to the same things.
Get the students to read these words syllable by syllable to help them remember it.
Step3 Doing Part B on page 19
Get the students to finish doing Part B on page 19. Show the pictures and ask the students to speak out both the British and American words out loudly.
StepP 4 Guessing what they are talking about
(1) Show the first picture of Comic Stripes to the student without the words. Ask the students to guess: “what are they talking about ”Play the tape for the students to listen and find out the answer to the questions.
(2)Get the students to read and feel the humor here. (In fact, Eddie has no idea what school is like and why people need to got to school. However, he still thinks dogs are clever. ) If the students have no problem in understanding the dialogue, get them to practice the dialogue in pairs and act out the dialogue in front of the class. Encourage the students to add something to make the dialogue funnier and more interesting.
STEP 5 Talking about the sentences

Inform the students with what they are going to learn in this period. In Unit One (8A), we have learned how to compare two things or more. Most adjectives then are used after a linking verb. In Unit Two, we will learn to talk about the amount of two things or more. It is the comparative and superlative use of adjectives that are used before nouns.

Inform the students that we can make another kind of comparison using ‘the same as’ and ‘different from’. The teacher can help the students to understand this by showing real objects. Talking about Simon’s uniform, Daniel’s uniform and John’s uniform. It is easy for the students to come to the following sentences.

1. Play the recoding of PartB on p. 34, ask Ss to imitate carefully and pay particular attention to the sentences using rising voice to show surprise.
2. Ask Ss to listen to the sentences again, put a rising arrow at the end of the sentence if you think the speaker is surprised. Put a falling arrow if you think the he/she isn’t..
3. Divide the class in pairs and read these sentences to their partners, correct each other and improve each other. While practising, the teacher walks around the class and correct Ss’wrong intination.
4. Ask Ss to think of something untrue or strange and make sentences. Make sure Ss pronounce the sentences with a falling voice. Invite the students to design a timetalbe for their favourite subjects, sports and after-school activities. They may need this to write about their ideal school.
