Continuous verb formsGeneral use (1) To describe an activity which is/was/will be going on at a certain moment(时刻) of present, past or future.
I am reading a book now.
I was reading a book at 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon.
I was reading a magazine when he came in.
I will be waiting for you at 5 o’clock tomorrow afternoon.
General use (2) To describe an action which is/was/will be going on during a short period of time at present, in the past or in the future.
I am working in Cathy’s restaurant in this summer holiday.
I was doing a cookery course in the last winter holiday.
I will be painting my living room tomorrow afternoon.
Special use (1) always/frequently/constantly/for ever, continually +doing
表示说话人对于该动作以及涉及到的人的反感之情
He is always chatting in class.
他上课老是说话.
Stuart was always gossiping about everybody.
Stuart老是在背后讲每个人的八卦事情.
Exercise 4 on page 17Special use (2) Past continuous for polite requestI was wondering whether you could lead me some money.

I was hoping that you could help me with this application form.

State verbs(状态动词)包括:
be
表示所属关系和事物本身特质的词,own, possess, have, measure, weigh, fit
感官动词,appear, expect, see, look, smell, taste
If the verbs above are used in the continuous form, they become “action” of some sort.And the referee is looking at the watch.
She is appearing in public for the first time.
I am seeing Thomas tonight. Compare the following sentencesIt looks/appears to be OK.
I see a bright light.
