阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。

We have heard of counterfeiting before. Usually it refers to people making money by printing it instead of earning it. But counterfeiting also can involve all sorts of consumer goods and manufactured products. From well-known brand names such as Calvin Klein jeans to auto parts, counterfeiters have found ways to produce goods that look authentic. In some instances, counterfeit products look better than the original!
The demand of brand-name products has helped counterfeiting grow into a very profitable business throughout the world and into a serious problem for legal manufacturers and consumers alike. Faulty counterfeit parts have caused more than two dozen crashes. Most counterfeit auto parts do not meet federal safety standards.
Counterfeiting hurts manufacturers in many ways. Analysts estimate that, in the United States alone, annual revenue loss runs form $ 6 billion to $ 8 billion. Perhaps even worse, consumers blame the innocent manufacturers when they unknowingly buy a counterfeit product and find it doesn’t perform as expected. Sometimes entire economies can suffer. For instance, when farmers in Kenya and Zaire used counterfeit fertilizers, both countries lost most crops.
By copying other firm’s products, counterfeiters avoid research and development costs and most marketing costs. High-tech products such as computers and their software products are especially easy to attack. As long as counterfeiting is profitable, large quantities of products are available to copy, and the laws are difficult to enforce, counterfeiters can be expected to be proper for a long time.
56. The word “counterfeiting” most probably means ______.
A. making things of poor quality for profit B. making things of good quality for profit
C. illegal making of things by copying D. legal making of things by copying

C. less profitable to counterfeit than high-tech products
D. more profitable to counterfeit than high-tech products
59. The quality of most counterfeit products is ______.
A. not up to the standards of America
B. up to the standards of America
C. so poor that few people want to buy the products
D. so good that most people prefer them to the authentic ones
(B)
Machines in the home have a short history. Sewing machines, washing machines and tumble dries are common enough today, but a hundred years ago few people could even imagine such things. However, inventors have designed and built a wide range of household machines since then. In most cases the inventor tried to patent(申请专利)his machine, to stop anyone copying it. Then he tried to produce a lot of them. If the machine became popular, the inventor could make a lot of money.
In 1790 the first sewing machine was patented. The inventor was an Englishman called Thomas Saint. There was nothing to match his machine for forty years, and then someone built a similar device. He was a Frenchman, Bartelemy Thimonier. Neither of these early machines worked very well, however. It wasn’t until 1846 that an inventor came up with a really efficient sewing machine. He was an American, Elias Howe and his machine was good enough to beat five skilled sewing women. He didn’t make much money from it, however. The first commercially successful sewing machine was patented by Isaac Singer five years later.
Today, we take washing machines for granted, but there was none before 1869. The revolving drum(旋转桶)of that first machine set a pattern for the future, but it was crude by today’s standards. The drum was turned by hand, and needed a lot of effort. Eight years passed before someone produced an electric washing machine. The world had to wait even longer for a machine to dry clothes. The first spin-drier was another American invention, patented in 1924; but it was 20 years before such machines were widely used.
It was yet another American, called Bissell, who introduced the carpet sweeper. He patented the original machine back in 1876. It didn’t pick up dirt very well, but it was quicker than a dustpan and brush. Thirty-six years later, even the carpet sweeper was old-fashioned: modern homes now have a vacuum cleaner(吸尘器)with an electric motor to suck the dust.
60. Whose sewing machine could do far more than the work that was done by five skilled sewing women
A. Thomas Saint’s. B. Bartelemy Thimonier’s.
C. Elias Howe’s. D. Isaac Singer’s.
61. According to the article, modern inventors __________ .
A. follow the pattern of the first revolving drum but improve it much
B. only imitate the first washing machine
C. power the first ever-made washing machine by electricity
D. have to wait for the first spin-drier for a long time
62. The underlined word “crude” in the sentence “but it was crude by today’s standards”

A. useless B. ugly-looking C. rough D. not skillfully made
63. The article mainly tells us about __________ .
A. the great inventors in the world
B. the important inventions in the world
C. the short history of household machines

Remember when a trip to the supermarket was nothing more than a boring thing requiring little or no specialized knowledge You could send your kids into a cart while you did shopping. You always bought the same brands, usually the brands your mother bought. You didn’t know about unit pricing, and furthermore, you didn’t care. It never occurred to you to read the labels on anything. After all, you’ d bought these things a hundred times.
But now, I really look on those days with a feeling of yearn (怀旧). How innocent we were! How carefree were those trips to the supermarket. No worries. Today a trip to the supermarket is filled with social influence. Every time I buy pork chops I think about the years I’ m shaving from my life. I keep a careful eye on the freshness date and examine the tamper - proof packaging. I am victim of that most dangerous social disease: shoppers’ panic.
I didn’t realize how serious my condition had become until the last time I needed laundry soap. It seemed simple enough. Just run into the market, grab a box of the old reliable and pay for it. I hadn’t planned on discovering Ecover, a new brand of laundry soap. It sat quietly on the shelf right next to my old reliable. “Healthy, gentle but effective.” My respect for it deepened with each new claim as I read the entire package. Then I looked at the price: $5.69 for2 pound. $5.69! I cast a quick glance at the old reliable, still on sale for $ 1.39
Six bucks for laundry soap! These people must be crazy! Who’s going to pay six bucks for laundry soap It’s not as though I can’t afford it. See, it’s concentrated—use less, get more. BUT SIX BUCKS! And the box is made from recycled materials.... This act went on for a solid half hour, after which I left the shelf without any soap at all.
Surely the meat department is a most threatening place. Remember what protein was good for you That’s all over. Every bite you take kills you. I won’ t even mention meat’ s moral influence.
When all is said and done, we still must eat. I gather up my healthy -cooking oil and my recycled paper towels and head to the checkout counter.
68. In the first paragraph, the author mainly wants to tell us that in the past
A. it was convenient to go shopping in the supermarket

D. we used to buy the same brands of products in the supermarket
69. Recalling the old days’ shopping in the supermarket, the author thinks it was _____.
A. pleasant B. fresh C. dangerous D. crazy
70. According to the author, eating pork chops will mean that _____
A. you must have a shave after that B. you should think of the old days
C. you are killing yourself slowly D. you must go on diet after that
71. In the supermarket, the author was attracted by a new brand of laundry soap for its _______
A. price B. claim C. package D. shape
72. According to the passage, what’s the author’s problem
A. She was too poor to afford the new brands in the supermarket.
B. She could not find the right laundry soap in the supermarket.

A thief who drooped a winning lottery ticket (彩票) at the scene of his crime has been given a lesson in honesty. His victim, who picked up the ticket, then claimed the 25,000 pounds prize, managed to trace him, and handed over the cash. The robbery happened when math professor Vinicio Sabbatucci, 58, was changing a tire on an Italian motorway. Another motorist, who stopped to “help”, stole a suitcase from his car and drove off. The professor found the dropped ticket and put it in his pocket before driving home to Ascoli in eastern Italy.
Next day, he saw the lottery results on TV and, taking out the ticket, realized it was a winner. He claimed the 60 million lire(里拉) prize. Then he began a battle with his conscience he decided he could not keep the money despite having been robbed, but his family rejected it, then he tried his best to persuade them to accept his idea. Finally he advertised in newspapers and on radio, saying, “I’m trying to find the man who robbed me. I have 60 million lire for him- a lottery win. Please meet me. Amonymity (匿名) guaranteed.”
Professor Sabbatucci received hundreds of calls from people hoping to trick him into handing them the cash. But there was one voice he recognized – and he arranged to meet the man in a park. The robber, a 35-year-old unemployed father of two, gave back the suitcase and burst into tears. He could not believe what was happening. “Why didn’t you keep the money ” he asked. The professor replied, “I couldn’t because it is not mime.” Then he walked off, spurning the thief’s offer of a reward.

In a society such as the United states or Canada, which has many national, religious, and cultural differences, people highly value individualism—the differences among people. Teachers place a lot of importance on the qualities that make each student special. The educational systems in these countries show these values. Students do not memorize information. Instead, they work individually and find answers themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age, students learn to form their own ideas and opinions.
In most Asian societies, by contrast, the people have the same language, history, and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the educational system in much of the Orient reflects society’s belief in group goals and purposes rather than individualism. Children in China, Japan, and Korea often work together and help one another on assignments. In the classroom, the teaching methods are often very formal. The teacher lectures, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students recite rules or information that they have memorized.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both of these systems of education. For example, one advantage to the system in Japan is that students there learn much more math and science than American students learn by the end of high school. They also study more hours each day and more days each year than North Americans do. The system is difficult, but it prepares students for a society that values discipline and self-control. There is, however, a disadvantage. Memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students say that after an exam, they forget much of the information that they have memorized.
The advantage of the educational system in North American, on the other hand, is that students learn to think for themselves. The system prepares them for a society that values creative ideas. There is, however, a disadvantage. When students graduate from high school, they haven’t memorized as many basic rules and facts as students in other countries have.

Possible version:
Nowadays a lot of schools keep their students in school all day long. Students have different opinions about it.
Some of the students think they enjoy less freedom and have little chance to get in touch with society. They are not able to fully develop their interests and hobbies,. Therefore, they have less interest in their studies.
Some others think school is the best place to get knowledge so they should put their heart into their lessons. Some students lack the ability to control themselves. Once out of school, they may lose control of themselves and do something that will influence/affect their studies.
Personally, it is necessary to keep students at school. But at the same time schools should organize various activities so that students can enjoy their school life. (I don’t agree to keep students at school all day. Schools should offer students more free time to develop their personal interests.
