第三部分 阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A 难度:★
I strongly believe that the drinking age should be raised. I don’t believe that at 21 most people are either fully grown enough or responsible enough to deal with drinking. Alcohol is one of the most commonly used drugs people use.
It’s common for minors(未成年人) to have friends who are the legal drinking age. I often see people come into the store to buy alcohol for minors. Teens will often wait outside while the 21-year-old buys the alcohol.
Many 21-year-old people are still in college and enjoy parties with alcohol. College is seen as a time when young people can have lots of parties and have fun with friends, but it is also when the danger first appears. If we raise the drinking age by even a few years, we could save thousands of lives.
Traffic accidents are often the result of people driving after having drunk alcohol. There are always reports of accidents on the news because a drunk driver missed a stop sign or wasn’t able to stay in his or her lane. Since alcohol weakens the body, it also makes drinkers more relaxed and looser. As a result, one mistake or one bad judgment can cause lots of damage within many families.
My oldest sister used to hang out with people who would buy alcohol so they could party. Her personality changed a lot, and I don’t think she will ever be the same again, even with help.
I’m not saying we should ban alcohol, but I believe that it should be more closely controlled. There are lots of other ways to have fun with your friends that don’t involve drinking. Alcohol is a drug and I believe we should make some changes to the laws relating to it.
56. Why does the author say that College is when the danger first appears?
A. There are lots of 21-year-olds in colleges.
B. College students usually have lots of parties.
C. College students usually have a lot of pressure.
D. 21-year-olds often drink at parties after entering college.
57. The author uses his oldest sister as an example in Paragraph 5 to show that _______________.
A. his oldest sister can drink a lot
B. young people should drink more
C. alcohol can do a lot of damage to young people
D. alcohol is beneficial to young people
58. According to the author, alcohol _____________.
A. should be banned
B. should be bought by teenagers
C. should be controlled closely
D. should be drunk with friends only
59. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To advise people to reduce drinking.
B. To call for a raise in the legal drinking age.
C. To explain why drinking is harmful.
D. To analyze drink-related accidents.

Each year, when Dr. Joel visits area schools in February to celebrate National Children’s Dental (牙齿的) Health Month, he tells the story of George Washington’s teeth, which are long thought to have been made out of wood. Here’s the true story:
President Washington lost his teeth at an early age. He suffered from poor dental health throughout his younger years. He had two sets of false teeth (dentures) made by the most famous American dentist of his day, Dr. John Greenwood. They were made from the finest ivory and gold. One of the sets was donated to the University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore, which is the oldest dental college in the world. The dental school in turn lent the dentures they had to the Smithsonian in 1976 for a special exhibition. Unfortunately, the dentures were stolen from the exhibition and were never found again.
For me, the most interesting part of the story about George’s teeth is the structure of these teeth. The upper and lower gold plates (托牙版) were connected by springs (弹簧) which pushed the upper and lower plates against the upper and lower ridges (脊状物) of his mouth to hold them in place. Washington actually had to actively close his mouth to make his teeth bite together. If he relaxed, his mouth would open. This is the reason why the Father of Our Country always looks so serious in his pictures. Take a look at a dollar bill. George isn’t upset — he’s just trying to keep his teeth in!
President Washington’s other dentures are now on permanent display at the Dr. Samuel Harris National Museum of Dentistry in downtown Baltimore. The exhibits there are really something special — fun and educational.
60. What were Washington’s false teeth made out of?
A. wood B. wood and ivory
C. ivory D. ivory and gold
61. Where was one of the two sets of Washington’s false teeth stolen?
A. In the Smithsonian.
B. In the University of Maryland Dental School.
C. In Baltimore.
D. In the Dr. Samuel Harris National Museum of Dentistry.
62. What is the best title for this passage?
A. President Washington
B. Washington’s Teeth
C. Children’s Dental Health
D. A Permanent Exhibition

Once snake charmers (耍蛇艺人) were an icon of Indian culture. Large numbers of snake charmers could be seen walking the streets of cities and towns, and their cloth-covered baskets hanging from bamboo poles slung across their shoulders.
The exotic(异域的)sight of these mystical (神秘的) men enticing snakes to dance to the music of flutes(笛子)has long been of interest to people in the West. The charmers deal with deadly snakes, which have added to the intrigue of street-side performances.
Today, however, such sights are increasingly rare and snake charmers struggle to survive. The lives of snake charmers have become very difficult since the Indian government banned the keeping of pet snakes under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. In addition to wildlife protection laws, another factor is the growing market for television programs about wildlife in India.
After seeing so many wildlife shows on television, many people have learnt so much about snakes that it is no longer possible to fool people of the danger of their job. Many people realize that there is no need to panic when you see a snake and, as a result, snake charmers have lost a lot of respect.
Another factor leading to the decline in the number of snake charmers is that children these days are so burdened with schoolwork that finding time to watch a snake charming performance is rare. What’s more, children today have so many other interests that they no longer view snake charming with wonder. Snake charmers are even becoming a rare sight in villages.
63. The underlined word “enticing” in Paragraph 2 probably means _________.
A. showing B. forcing
C. encouraging D. instructing
64. How many factors are leading to the decline of snake charmers, according to the passage?
A. 2 B. 4 C. 3 D. 5
65. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Snake charmers have existed since Indian culture first began.
B. People once had great respect for snake charmers.
C. The number of snake charmers is increasing today.
D. City people can no longer see snake charmers.
66. The passage is mainly about _________.
A. the careers of snake charmers in villages
B. the origin of street-side performances
C. the icons of Indian culture
D. the decline in the number of snake charmers

A Muslim(穆斯林)wedding is typically an event that will last many days. Before the wedding, there is an engagement (订婚)ceremony, and rings are exchanged during this ceremony. The groom’s family then provides the bride’s wedding clothes. These are the steps followed at Muslim wedding ceremonies.

The bride is anointed(涂抹)with turmeric paste (姜黄糊) provided by the groom’s family during the Manjha ceremony. This happens at the bride’s house two days before the wedding.

Henna(指甲花)is applied to the bride’s hands and feet. Only unmarried women may participate in this. A spot is also applied to the groom as a symbolic sign. The bride isn’t allowed to leave her house until the wedding ceremony.

Family and friends go with the groom from his place to the wedding ceremony location. If there isn’t a large enough place for the wedding ceremony, a shamiana is set up, which is a large decorated tent.
Step 4:
Drums and musical instruments are played as the groom arrives. The groom then exchanges a class of sharbet and money with the bride’s brother.
Step 5:
The ceremony is started as the priest(牧师)asks the bride and groom if they’re happy with the arrangement and agree to the marriage. The priest then reads a section from the Koran(古兰经).
Step 6:
The marriage is then registered. The groom and two witnesses must then sign it immediately. The bride signs it at a later time. The groom gives gifts and money to the bride’s sisters.
Step 7:
The bride and groom sit together during their first meal. A long scarf is used to cover their heads while the priest has them read prayers. The couple is permitted to see each other through the reflection of mirrors.

YouTube is a popular free website which lets users upload, view, and share video clips (片段). The wide variety of site content includes movie and TV clips and music videos, as well as amateur content such as videoblogging.
Despite YouTube’s huge user base, content library, and popularity, it is still a very small company at the administrative level, staffed by only about 60 employees. YouTube, Inc. was founded by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim, who were all early employees of PayPal.
YouTube had a humble(简陋的)beginning in February 2005, in a garage in California, and none at that time thought that it would be such a huge hit among netizens (网民) in less than two years. In April 2006, Sequoia put an additional $ 8 million into the company, which experienced a boom in popularity and growth in just its first few months.
Soon the website began to make profits. It was at this stage that Google took notice of YouTube and expressed interest in acquiring it. Eventually, on October 9, 2006, they bought it for $1.65 billion in stock, the biggest purchase made by Google so far.
Today, YouTube is one of the fastest growing portals in the World Wide Web, and it is the tenth most popular website in cyberspace. 100 million clips are viewed every day on YouTube, with an additional 65,000 new videos uploaded every 24 hours. Dear Jack,
I’m very glad to hear from you.
Let me introduce to you Austria, the beautiful country I visited recently. It is a member state of the EU and is located in the central part of Europe. It covers an area of 83,850 square kilometers and has a population of about 8 million. Its official language is German, but many people can speak English. It is an amazingly beautiful country. The Alps, which is a paradise for hiking in summer and skiing in winter, run through the western and southern parts of Austria. The “blue” Danube River, the second longest river in Europe, flows through the northeast. The eastern provinces, including Vienna, the capital city, lie in the beautiful Danube basin. Austria has many historic sites, such as, Vienna, the capital of music, and Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart. If you ever visit Austria, the combination of culture and history will give you a feast for your eyes and ears.
Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,
John
