Unit 1 Can I have some sweets
I. Warmer
1.Get the ss to think of all the foods they know in English.
2.Write up their suggestions on the board.
3.Now get them to draw one thing from the list on a big piece of paper.
4.Now tell the ss that you are going to call out two ss's names and they have to stand up and hold up their their pictures.
5.Students A names what Student B is holding and Student B has to name what Student A is holding.
Example
T:John and Maria.
(John holds up his picture and Maria holds up her picture.)
John:Pizza.
Maria:Bread.
II. Listen and point.
1.Tell the ss to get a large piece of paper and write the words "Sorry,you can't."
2.Tell the ss that you are going to ask them for different items of food.
3.The ss have to say "Sorry, you can't ."and hold up the piece of paper each time.
Examples
T:Can I have some sweets
Ss:(hold up the sign)Sorry,you can't.
T:Can I have some biscuits
Ss:(hold up the sign)Sorry,you can't.
4.Continue this way to give the ss lots of practice.
5.Now tell them that you are goin to play the tape.
6.Each time they hear "Sorry,you can't ."they have to hold up their pieces of paper and shout it out (you may need to stop the tape.).
7.Play the tape.The ss should have their books closed so that they have to listen.
8.They should hear "Sorry,you can't ."three times.
9.Now play the tape again and get them to following in their books.
III. Ask and answer.
1.If you want to make this activity more real,then get the ss to draw five small pictures of food and then have them work in pairs.
2.When Student A asks a question ,Student B looks at his/her cards and sees what they are.Then they either say "Yes,you can."or "Sorry,you can't."
3.You can teach them the phrase "Here you are."so that the student can give the food (the card)to the other student.
Examples
S1:Can I have some cake
S2:Sorry, you can't.
S1:Can I have some bread
S2:Yes,you can.Here you are.
Teaching tip.
Always make the most of the book and the pictures and clue that it provides.The pictures can be very useful for establishing the vocabulary before ss do an activity or they will have problems understanding and will be forced to continually ask the teacher questions to clarify the meaning .By doing teh vocabulary first,you allow the ss to concentrate on the language and their fluency.
