China faces water shortages
Water shortages remain a big challenge for China, although the country has made progress in extending access to water. This comes in the just-released United Nations Human Development Report for 2006.
The UN report paints a terrifying picture for the world. Over a billion people do not have access to water and over two and a half billion do not have access to clean water. The situation in China is just as worrying. Out of more than one thousand cities in China, about two-fifths are faced with water shortages. Experts say action is needed right away.
Ma Shihao, SR. engineer of BJ research Inst. of Envir. Protection said, “Specific measures should be taken immediately to deal with the water crisis. For example, we need to have efficient water recycling and save water at the same time.”
China also faces a serious problem of water quality. The UN report says most of the country's canals; rivers and lakes are severely tainted by agricultural, industrial and household waste.
The Chinese government says over the next four years, it will spend some 125 billion US dollars to improve treatment and recycling facilities to clean up urban water pollution.
