The Red Cross is an international organization which cares for people who are in need of help. A man in a Paris hospital who needs blood, a woman in Mexico who was injured in an earthquake, and a family in India that lost their home in a storm may all be aided by the Red Cross.
The Red Cross exists in almost every country around the globe. The world Red Cross organizations are sometimes called the Red Crescent, the Red Mogen Daid, the Sun, and the Red Lion. All of these agencies share a common goal of trying to help people in need.
The idea of forming an organization to help the sick and wounded during a war started with Jean Henri Dunant. In 1859, he observed how people were suffering on a battlefield in Italy. He wanted to help all the wounded people regardless of which side they were fighting for. The most important result of his work was an international treaty called the Geneva Convention(协定). It protects prisoners of war, the sick and wounded, and other citizens during a war.

Good health is the most valuable possession a person can have, but one can’t take good health for granted. It is important to remember that the body needs proper care in order to be healthy. There are three things that a person can do to help stay in good shape: eat the right foods, get enough sleep and exercise regularly.
Proper nutrition is important for good health. Your body cannot fun_ction well unless it receives the proper kind of “fuel”. Avoid foods with lots of sugar and fat. Eat plenty of foods high in protein, like lean meat, fish, beans and nuts. Vegetables and fruit are especially important because they provide necessary vitamins and minerals. However, don’t overeat. It is not healthful to be overweight.
Getting the proper amount of sleep is also important. If you don’t get enough sleep, you feel tired and irritable(易怒的). You have no energy. Over a long period of time a little amount of sleep may even result in a change of personality. Be sure to allow yourself from seven to nine hours of sleep each night. If you do, your body will feel strong and refreshed, and your mind will be sharp.
Finally, get plenty of exercise. Exercise firms the body, strengthens the muscles and prevents you from gaining weight. It also improves your heart and lungs. If you follow a regular exercise program, you will probably increase your lifespan(寿命). Any kind of exercise is good. Most sports are excellent for keeping the body in good shape. Basketball, swimming, bicycling, gymnastics and running are all good examples. Sports are not only good for your body, but they are enjoyable and interesting, too.
If everybody were to eat the right foods and get plenty of sleep and exercise regularly, the world would be a happier and healthier place. We would all live to be much older and wiser.

What do you do if you are hit in the mouth and one of your teeth is knocked out? A dentist may be able to put the tooth back in for you, but you have to get to the dentist first. In the meantime, you have to store the tooth so that it will stay healthy.
The simplest thing to do is to put the tooth back into your mouth, or you could put it in milk. Frank Courts, a dentist at the University of Florida, worked with other researchers to find the safest way of keeping knocked-out teeth. He tried putting teeth into milk, into water, and into cell-culture medium(细胞培养液). He also tried just drying the teeth in the open air. He used teeth that had to be removed from people’s mouths for various reasons. The teeth were put into one of the solutions(溶液) or stored in the air for one hour. Then cells from the root of the teeth were scraped off the teeth. Dr Courts and the others then studied how healthy these cells were.
The cell-culture medium worked best to keep a knocked-out tooth healthy outside the mouth. However, few people keep cell-culture medium handy at home or in school. The next best thing was milk. But Dr Courts said that the best thing of all was to wash the tooth and put it right back into its socket(牙槽) in the mouth. For some people, though, this is just too painful or upsetting. So milk will do, until you get your tooth (and your mouth) to a dentist.

How can you find out what is going on inside a person’s body without opening the patient’s body up? Regular X rays can show a lot. CAT scans (扫描仪) can show even more. They can give a complete view of body organs. (器官).
What is a CAT scan? CAT stands for a kind of machine. It is a special X ray machine that gets a 360 – degree picture of a small area of a patient’s body.
Doctors use X rays to study and determine diseases and injuries within the body. X rays can find a foreign object inside the body or take pictures of some inside organs to be X – rayed.
A CAT scanner, however, uses a group of X rays to give a cross – section (横截面的) view of a specific part of the body. A fine group of X rays is scanned across the body and around the patient form many different directions. A computer studies the information form each direction and produces a clear cross – sectional picture on a screen. This picture is then photographed for later use. Several cross – sections, taken one after another, can give clear “photos” of the entire body or of any body organ. The newest CAT scanners can even give clear pictures of what appears unclear to the eye. And because of the 360 – degree pictures, CAT scans show clear and complete views of organs in a manner that was once only shown during operation or examination of a dead patient.
Frequent appearance before X rays can cause skin burns, cancer or other damages to the body. Yet CAT scans actually don’t cause more radiation (辐射) to the patient than regular X rays do. CAT scans can also be done without getting harmful into the patient, so they are less risky than regular X rays.
CAT scans provide exact, detailed information. They can quickly find such a thing as bleeding inside the bran. They are helping to save lives.

The number of people with loss of hearing in America is about 250,000 people at the present
time. Some of these people are fortunate enough to have hearing aids.
The ear is a very complex part of the human body. A sound starts with sound waves traveling through the auditory (听觉的) canal towards the eardrum. The sound waves will cause the eardrum to vibrate (震动). This vibration will be conducted by three small bones, the malleus, incus and stapes to the snail shaped cochlea (耳蜗) of the inner ear. The cochlea will give these vibrations to the hair cells within the ear. The hair cells are what concert sound waves into electrical waves. The brain can read these electrical waves. The loss of hearing in the human body can be caused by a number of things. A common result of some of these causes is the damaging of the hair cells within the ear. Without the hair cells these is no way for the brain to interpret sound waves; as a result, nothing will be heard.
A man whose life was turned upside – down when he completely lost his hearing in the span of only three days inspired hearing aids. This man’s name was Michael L. Pierschalla. Michael Pierschalla was a partial inventor and inspirer for the making of the hearing aid.
When hair cells are damaged they can not loudly communicate electrical waves to the brain, and sometimes the brain can’t hear anything, even though there are electrical waves coming to it. Hearing aids help hair cells communicate electrical waves louder to the brain, but they aren’t as capable as normal hair cells. They can’t communicate high – pitched sounds as well as a healthy ear. Hearing aids can’t restore hearing to people without any help from at least some intact hair cells. People without some hair cells are entirely deaf, and there is no technology right now to help them hear. Perhaps sometime in the future something will be found to restore full hearing to those with major hair cell damage or no hair cells.

D.No, hearing aids don’t work for people with hair cells.
53.Which bone is a conductor of sound waves?
A.Malleus. B.Incus. C.Stapes. D.All of the above.
54.What is the purpose of the cochlea?
A.To change the sound waves to electrical waves.
B.To pick up the sound waves and transfer them to the malleus, incus, and stapes.
C.To transfer sound waves from the malleus, incus, and stapes to the hair cells.
D.The article does not say.
