They

"I

the

"but

That
may
be
an
exception
to
a
universal
85
,
which
is
that
most
people
are
happy
to
86

if
they
can.
But
there
is
87

universal
principle,
which
is,
88

you
are
alone
on
a
deserted
island,
you
are
probably
89

to
ask
for
help—especially
from
a
stranger.
I
recently
learned
that
the
word
"mayday"
has
90

to
do
with
the
month
of
May.
91
,
it
comes
from
the
French
word
"m'aidez",
which
means
"help
me".
But
it
is
used
only
as
a
last
resort.
The
plane
is
nose-diving.
The
ship
is
fatally

"Mayday!
Mayday!
Mayday!"
a
voice
screams
over

If
help
doesn't
arrive
quickly,
all
will
be
lost.
We
94

the
thought
that
men
are
famously
bad
about
asking
for
directions.
But,
95
,
most
people
do
not
easily
ask
for
the
help
they
need.
They
96

until
they
are
hopelessly
lost,
or
a
simple
job
has
become
a
nightmare
before
they
97

help.
And
it
is
also
98

that
help
is
not
usually
too
hard
to
get.
But
we
have
to
ask
for
it.
Entrepreneur
Brian
Tracy
99

it
well,
"Ask
for
what
you
want.
But
never
be
afraid
to
ask."
Or
like
one
man
is
fond
of
saying,
"You
don't
always
get
what
you
ask
for,
but
you
100

get
what
you
don't
ask
for."
Do
you
need
help
It
may
be
easier
to
get
than
you
think.
Just
ask
for
it.

A
I
looked
at
my
beautiful
Christmas
tree
and
sighed.
It
was
time.
The
New
Year
was
a
week
old
and
my
tree
still
stood
in
the
corner
of
our
room
with
its
collection
of
memories
proudly
displayed
in
a
shower
of
colorful
lights.
I'd
procrastinated
long
enough.
I
got
up,
went
to
the
garage
and
dragged
all
the
boxes
into
the
room.
I
prepared
the
boxes
and
carefully
placed
the
decorations
of
the
tree
in
their
protective
packaging,
pausing
every
few
minutes
to
admire
a
favorite.
"Hey,
little
Santa!"
I
held
the
Santa
from
my
childhood,
"Thanks
for
being
my
friend
for
almost
fifty
years."
He
was
a
little
ragged
but
still
gives
me
a
flood
of
wonderful
memories.
"Until
next
year,
my
dear
friend."
There
was
a
collection
of
handmade
ones.
My
children
made
in
the
their
first
years
of
school,
more
than
twenty
years
ago.
Made
by
tiny
hands,
they
are
far
from
perfect
in
design,
but
every
year
they
go
on
my
memory
tree—memories
of
young
giggles
on
Christmas
morning
and
a
smiling
face
when
they
handed
them
to
me
when
I
came
home
from
work.
"Look
what
we
made,
Daddy!"
"Oh!
It
is
beautiful.
Let's
find
a
special
spot
on
the
tree
for
it."
Every
year
since,
they
are
displayed.
A
few
hours
after
I
started,
the
filled
boxes
were
back
in
the
garage.
The
room
was
vacuumed
and
I
sat
staring
at
a
barren
corner.
The
room
seemed
so
empty.
It
took
me
two
days
of
work
to
assemble
and
decorate
my
tree,
but
only
a
few
hours
to
take
it
apart.
My
tree
is
like
a
good
marriage
or
a
great
friendship.
Like
the
tree,
they
take
a
long
time
to
assemble
and
decorate
with
memories,
but
can
be
torn
down
quickly.
All
it
takes
is
an
unkind
word
or
a
thoughtless
act,
and
what
once
stood
proudly
in
the
glow
of
love
comes
falling
down.
Every
year
I
have
to
put
my
tree
away,
but
not
my
marriage
or
friendships.
I
take
great
care
of
those.
They
get
to
glow
in
the
corner
of
my
life
for
as
long
as
I
live.
I
get
to
analyze
my
tree
and
find
memories
for
a
few
weeks
every
year.
I
can
do
the
same
with
the
loves
in
my
life
every
day.
When
I
held
the
Santa,
a
flood
of
wonderful
memories
returned.
The
same
happens
when
I
hold
my
wife
or
see
the
smile
of
a
friend
across
the
room.
Take
great
care
of
your
friendships
and
your
marriage.
Once
they
come
down,
they
aren't
as
easy
to
put
back
together
as
a
Christmas
tree,
if
at
all.
Stand
them
in
that
special
spot
in
the
corner
of
your
heart
and
admire
their
glow.

B
Certainly
people
make
you
feel
comfortable
when
they
are
around.
You
spend
an
hour
with
them
and
feel
as
if
you've
known
them
half
your
life.
These
people
have
something
in
common.
And
once
we
know
what
it
is,
we
can
try
to
do
it
ourselves.
How
is
it
done
Here
are
several
skills
that
good
talkers
have.
If
you
follow
the
skills,
they
will
help
you
put
people
at
their
ease,
and
make
friends
with
them
quickly.
First
of
all,
good
talkers
ask
questions.
Almost
everyone,
no
matter
how
shy
he
is,
will
answer
a
question.
One
well
known
businessman
says,
"At
business
lunches,
I
always
ask
people
what
they
did
this
morning.
It's
a
common
question,
but
it
will
get
things
going."
From
there
you
can
move
on
to
other
matters—sometimes
to
really
personal
questions.
And
how
he
answers
will
let
you
know
how
far
you
can
go.
Second,
once
good
talkers
have
asked
questions,
they
listen
for
the
answer.
This
point
seems
clear,
but
it
isn't.
Your
questions
should
have
a
point
and
help
to
tell
what
sort
of
person
you
are
talking
to.
And
to
find
out,
you
really
have
to
listen
carefully
and
attentively(关注的).
Real
listening
at
least
means
something.
First
it
means
not
to
change
the
subject
of
conversation.
If
someone
sticks
to
one
topic,
you
can
take
it
as
a
fact
that
he'll
be
really
interested
in
it.
Real
listening
also
means
not
just
listening
to
words,
but
to
tones(语调)
of
voice.
If
the
voice
sounds
dull,
then,
it's
time
for
you
to
change
the
subject.
Finally,
good
talkers
know
well
how
to
deal
with
occasion(场合)
of
parting.
If
you're
saying
good-bye,
you
may
give
him
a
firm
handshake
and
say,
"I've
really
enjoyed
meeting
you."
If
you
want
to
see
that
person
again,
don't
keep
it
secret.
Let
people
know
what
you
feel,
and
they
may
walk
away
feeling
as
if
they've
known
you
half
their
lives.
105.
You
will
like
to
stay
with
some
people

with
you

when
you

met
him

C.
with
whom
you
feel
it
easy
to
get
along
well
D.
from
whom
you
can
get
necessary
and
timely
help
106.
What
does
the
underlined
expression
"put
people
at
their
ease"
mean
A.
To
make
people
feel
it
easy
to
talk
to
you.
B.
To
make
people
feel
comfortable.
C.
To
make
people

D.
To

next
B.

C.

D.

C
Would
you
like
to
make
friends
easily,
have
great
social
skills,
and
even
deal
with
difficult
people
easily
In
today's
extremely
competitive
world,
if
you
want
to
succeed,
one
of
the
smartest
things
you
can
do
is
invest(投资)
in
people
skills.
We
invest
a
lot
of
money
to
educate
ourselves.
And
since
our
children
are
born
we
do
everything
in
our
power
to
invest
in
and
encourage
their
education.
However,
what
most
fail
to
do
for
ourselves
and
for
our
children
is
to
invest
in
people
skills
education.
Therefore,
we
need
to
take
charge
of
doing
this
ourselves
by
taking
necessary
steps.
The
ability
to
deal
with
situations
and
people
will
help
with
your
close
relationships
with
family
and
friends,
the
most
necessary
part
of
your
life.
You
often
see
disagreement
in
families
that
could
be
avoided
if
only
they
had
a
little
knowledge
of
people
skills
and
how
to
deal
with
difficult
people.
I
have
two
children
who
love
to
read
and
one
who
does
not.
Thankfully
today
this
is
not
a
problem
as
a
person
does
not
have
to
be
a
reader
to
take
advantage
of
a
good
self-help
book—we
have
audio
books
(有声读物)!
Audio
books
are
good
for
all
people
looking
for
knowledge
and
entertainment
because
audio
books
can
fill
in
that
wasted
time—for
example
while
someone
is
exercising,
driving
or
doing
the
housework
they
can
be
listening
to
some
type
of
self-improvement
education
or
entertainment
with
an
MP3
player.
There
are
lots
and
lots
of
great
self-help
books
on
the
market.
One
of
my
all-time
favourites
that
I
have
encouraged
my
children
to
read/listen
to
is
Dale
Carnegie's
"How
to
Win
Friends
and
Influence
People".
This
was
published
in
1937
but
is
just
as
connected
today
as
it
was
back
then.
Human
nature
has
not
changed.
And
if
you
think
it
might
be
written
a
bit
like
Shakespeare
and
may
be
boring
you
would
be
wrong.
He
writes
as
if
he
was
having
a
conversation
with
you
and
makes
it
really
entertaining
with
questions
and
stories.

today
B.
a
lot
of

C.
the
competition
today
is
more

D.
little

to
people
skills
education

How
did
the
author
solve
the
problem
that
one
of
his
children
hates
to
read
A.
The
author
didn't
allow
him
to
waste
time.
B.
The
author
used
audio
books
to
interest
him.
C.
The
author
made
use
of
a
good
self-help
book.
D.
The
author
encouraged
him
by
buying
him
an
MP3
player.
110.
The
book
"How
to
Win
Friends
and
Influence
People"
is
still
helpful
today
because
.
A.
people
can
listen
to
it
B.
it
is
amusing
and
interesting
C.
human
nature
is
still
the
same
D.
it
has
some
similarity
to
Shakespeare
111.
What
is
the
author's
purpose
in
writing
this
passage
A.
To
call
for
the
education
about
people
skills.
B.
To
provide
the
right
direction
of
education.
C.
To
advertise
some
best
audio
books
for
children.
D.
To
give
some
advice
on
how
to
get
along
with
others.
D
Facial
expressions
carry
meaning
that
is
determined
by
situations
and
relationships.
For
example,
in
American
culture,the
smile
is
in
general
an
expression
of
pleasure.
Yet
it
also
has
other
uses.
A
woman's
smile
at
a
police
officer
does
not
carry
the
same
meaning
as
the
smile
she
gives
to
a
young
child.
A
smile
may
show
love
or
politeness.
It
can
also
hide
true
feelings.
It
often
causes
confusion
across
cultures.
For
example,
many
people
in
Russia
consider
smiling
at
strangers
in
public
to
be
unusual
and
even
improper.
Yet
many
Americans
smile
freely
at
strangers
in
public
places
(although
this
is
less
common
in
big
cities).
Some
Russians
believe
that
Americans
smile
in
the
wrong
places;
some
Americans
believe
that
Russians
don't
smile
enough.
In
Southeast
Asian
cultures,
a
smile
is
frequently
used
to
cover
painful
feelings.
Vietnamese
people
may
tell
a
sad
story
but
end
the
story
with
a
smile.
Our
faces
show
emotions,
but
we
should
not
attempt
to
"read"
people
from
another
culture
as
we
would
"read"
someone
from
our
own
culture.
The
fact
that
members
of
one
culture
do
not
express
their
emotions
as
openly
as
do
members
of
another
does
not
mean
that
they
do
not
experience
emotions.
Rather,
there
are
cultural
differences
in
the
amount
of
facial
expressiveness
permitted.
For
example,
in
public
and
in
formal
situations
many
Japanese
do
not
show
their
emotions
as
freely
as
Americans
do.
When
with
friends,
Japanese
and
Americans
seem
to
show
their
emotions
similarly.
It
is
difficult
to
generalize
about
Americans
and
facial
expressiveness
because
of
personal
and
cultural
differences
in
the
United
States.
People
from
certain
cultural
backgrounds
in
the
United
States
seem
to
be
more
facially
expressive
than
others.
The
key
is
to
try
not
to
judge
people
whose
ways
of
showing
emotion
are
different.
If
we
judge
according
to
our
own
cultural
habits,
we
may
make
the
mistake
of
"reading"
the
other
person
incorrectly.
112.
What
does
the
smile
usually
mean
in
the
U.S.
A.
Love.
B.
Politeness.
C.
Joy.
D.
Thankfulness.
113.
The
author
mentions
the
smile
of
the
Vietnamese
to
prove
that
a
smile
can
.
A.
show
friendliness
to
strangers
B.
be
used
to
hide
true
feelings
C.
be
used
in
the
wrong
places
D.
show
personal
habits
114.
What
should
we
do
before
attempting
to
"read"
people
A.
Learn
about
their
relations
with
others.
B.
Understand
their
cultural
backgrounds.
C.
Find
out
about
their
past
experience.
D.
Figure
out
what
they
will

Shopping
for
clothes
is
not
the
same
experience
for
a
man
as
it
is
for
a
woman.
A
man
goes
shopping
because
he
needs
something.
His
purpose
is
settled
and
decided
in
advance.
117.

All
men
simply
walk
into
a
shop
and
ask
the
assistant
for
what
they
want.
If
the
shop
has
it
in
stock,
the
salesman
immediately
provides
it
and
the
business
of
trying
it
on
takes
place
at
once.
118.

Now
how
does
a
woman
go
about
buying
clothes
In
almost
every
respect
she
does
so
in
the
opposite
way.
119.

She
has
never
fully
made
up
her
mind
what
she
wants,
and
she
is
only
"having
a
look
around".
120.

She
will
try
on
any
number
of
things.
The
most
important
thing
in
her
mind
is
the
thought
of
finding
something
that
everyone
thinks
suits
her.
She
is
always
on
the
lookout
for
the
unexpected
bargain.
Faced
with
a
roomful
of
dresses,
a
woman
may
easily
spend
an
hour
going
from
one
rail(挂衣杆)
to
another
before
selecting
the
dresses
she
wants
to
try
on.
It
is
a
painful
process
for
husbands,
but
obviously
an
enjoyable
one
for
wives.
121.

A.
Her
shopping
is
not
often
based
on
need.
B.
Few
men
have
patience
with
this
treatment.
C.
So
most
dress
shops
provide
chairs
for
the
waiting
husbands.
D.
He
knows
what
he
wants
and
his
goal
is
to
find
it
and
buy
it.
E.
For
a
man,
slight
problems
may
begin
when
the
shop
does
not
have
what
he
wants.
F.
She
is
"always
open
to
persuasion";
indeed
she
even
takes
seriously
what
the
saleswoman
tells
her.
G.
Finally
the
deal
is
often
completed
in
less
than
five
minutes
with
hardly
any
chat
and
to
everyone's
satisfaction.

Tom
and
Alice
were
both
patient
in
a
Mental
Hospital.
One
day
they
were
walking
by
the
swimming
pool
of
the
hospital
while
Tom
suddenly
jumped
into
the
deep
end.
He
sank

bottom.
Alice

to

She
swam

and

When
the

became
aware
Alice's
heroic
act,
he
immediate
reviewed
her
file
and
called
her
into
his
office.
"Alice,
I
