War

young
Rob
came
back
from
the

Determined

to

the

of

their

that
the
captain
kept
with
him,

Dead
Man
Talking
is
a
fantastic
tale
of
Pat,
who
had
a
terrible
fight
with
his
best
friend,
Joe,
ten
years
ago—but
now
hears
that
Joe
is
dead,
and
he
must
attend
his
funeral.
But
Joe
is
not
going
quietly
that
good
night—he's
lying
in
his
coffin
being
very
chatty
indeed.

D.
a
plan

develop
the

of

among
adults
B
I
used
to
think
of
myself
as
a
person
learned
in
books,
but
my
bookshelves
told
a
different
story.
Apart
from
a
few
Indian
novels
and
an
Australian
book,
my
literature
collection
only
consisted
of
British
and
American
titles.
Worse
still,
I
couldn't
ever
found
anything
in
translation.
My
reading
was
limited
to
stories
by
English-speaking
authors.
So,
at
the
start
of
2012,
I
set
myself
the
challenge
of
trying
to
read
a
book
from
every
country
in
a
year
to
find
out
what
I
was
missing.
With
no
idea
where
to
get
those
books,
I
was
unlikely
to
find
publications
from
nearly
200
nations
on
the
shelves
of
my
local
bookshop,
so
I
decided
to
ask
the
readers
all
over
the
world
for
help.
I
created
a
blog
called
A
Year
of
Reading
the
World
and
put
out
an
appeal
for
suggestions
of
titles
that
I
could
read
in
English.
The
response
was
amazing.
People
all
over
the
world
were
getting
in
touch
with
me,
offering
ideas
and
book
lists.
Some
posted
me
books
from
their
home
countries.
In
addition,
several
writers,
like
Turkmenistan's
Ak
Welsapar
and
Panama's
Juan
David
Morgan,
sent
me
unpublished
translations
of
their
novels,
giving
me
a
rare
opportunity
to
read
works
unavailable
in
Britain.
Even
with
such
an
extraordinary
team
of
bibliophiles(爱书者)
behind
me,
however,
sourcing
books
was
no
easy
task.
With
translations
making
up
only
around
4.5
percent
of
literary
works
published
in
the
UK,
getting
English
versions
of
stories
was
tricky.
One
by
one,
the
books
from
the
countries
on
the
list
filled
my
heart
with
laughter,
love,
anger,
hope
and
fear.
Lands
that
had
once
seemed
exotic
and
remote
became
close
and
familiar
to
me.
At
its
best,
I
learned,
reading
makes
the
world
real.

C
In
1770
when
I
was
a
child,
I
was
always
at
Wuthering
Heights,
because
my
mother
was
a
servant
with
the
Earnshaw
family.
They
are
a
very
old
family
who
have
lived
in
that
house
for
centuries,
as
you
can
see
from
their
name
on
the
stone
over
the
front
door.
I
grew
up
with
Catherine
and
Hindley
Earnshaw,
and
we
three
played
together
as
children.
One
day,
their
father
Mr.
Earnshaw
came
back
from
a
long
journey.
He
had
travelled
sixty
miles
to
Liverpool
and
back
on
business
and
was
very
tired.
“Look
what
I've
brought
you!”
he
told
us
all,
unwrapping
something
he
was
holding
carefully
in
his
arms.
Catherine
and
Hindley
were
expecting
presents,
and
they
rushed
eagerly
to
see
what
it
was.
They
were
very
disappointed
to
see
only
a
dirty,
black-haired
gipsy(吉卜赛)
child.
“I
found
him
all
alone
in
the
busy
streets
of
Liverpool,”
Mr.
Earnshaw
explained
to
them,
“and
I
couldn't
leave
him
to
die.
He
can
sleep
in
your
room.”
But
Hindley
and
Catherine
were
angry
because
they
had
not
received
any
presents,
and
refused
to
let
the
strange
child
share
their
room.
However,
Mr.
Earnshaw
insisted,
and
little
by
little
the
boy
became
accepted
by
the
family.
He
was
called
Heathcliff,
as
a
first
and
last
name.
No
one
ever
discovered
who
his
parents
had
been.
Catherine
and
he
became
great
friends,
but
Hindley
hated
him,
and
was
often
cruel
to
him.
Old
Mr.
Earnshaw
was
strangely
fond
of
this
gipsy
child,
and
frequently
punished
his
son
for
behaving
badly
to
Heathcliff.
Hindley
began
to
hate
his
father's
feelings
for
Heathcliff,
and
saw
them
both
as
enemies.
This
situation
could
not
last.
As
Mr.
Earnshaw
grew
old
and
ill,
Heathcliff
became
even
more
his
favourite,
and
Hindley
often
quarrelled
with
his
father.
When
Hindley
was
sent
away
to
study,
I
hoped
that
we
would
have
peace
in
the
house.
But
then
it
was
that
old
servant
Joseph
who
caused
trouble.
He
tried
to
persuade
his
master
to
be
stricter
with
the
children,
and
was
always
complaining
that
Heathcliff
and
Catherine
did
not
spend
enough
time
studying
the
Bible(《圣经》)
or
attending
church
services.
Catherine
was
a
wild
girl
in
those
days.
We
had
to
watch
her
every
moment
of
the
day,
to
stop
her
playing
her
tricks
on
us.
She
was
proud,
and
liked
giving
orders.
But
she
had
the
prettiest
face
and
the
sweetest
smile
you've
ever
seen.
I
could
forgive
her
anything
when
she
came
to
say
she
was
sorry.

D
Perhaps
you
think
you
could
easily
add
to
your
happiness
with
more
money.
Strange
as
it
may
seem,
if
you're
unsatisfied,
the
issue
is
not
a
lack
of
means
to
meet
your
desires
but
a
lack
of
desires—not
that
you
cannot
satisfy
your
tastes
but
that
you
don't
have
enough
tastes.
Real
riches
consist
of
well-developed
and
hearty
capacities(能力)
to
enjoy
life.
Most
people
are
already
swamped(淹没)
with
things.
They
eat,
wear,
go
and
talk
too
much.
They
live
in
too
big
a
house
with
too
many
rooms,
yet
their
house
of
life
is
a
hut.
Your
house
of
life
ought
to
be
a
mansion(豪宅),
a
royal
palace.
Every
new
taste,
every
additional
interest,
every
fresh
enthusiasm
adds
a
room.
Here
are
several
rooms
your
house
of
life
should
have.
Art
should
be
a
desire
for
you
to
develop
simply
because
the
world
is
full
of
beautiful
things.
If
you
only
understood
how
to
enjoy
them
and
feed
your
spirit
on
them,
they
would
make
you
as
happy
as
to
find
plenty
of
ham
and
eggs
when
you're
hungry.
Literature,
classic
literature,
is
a
beautiful,
richly
furnished
room
where
you
might
find
many
an
hour
of
rest
and
refreshment.
To
gain
that
love
would
go
toward
making
you
a
rich
person,
for
a
rich
person
is
not
someone
who
has
a
library
but
who
likes
a
library.
Music
like
Mozart's
and
Bach's
shouldn't
be
absent.
Real
riches
are
of
the
spirit.
And
when
you've
brought
that
spirit
up
to
where
classical
music
feeds
it
and
makes
you
a
little
drunk,
you
have
increased
your
thrills
and
bettered
them.
And
life
is
a
matter
of
thrills.
Sports,
without
which
you
remain
poor,
mean
a
lot
in
life.
No
matter
who
you
are,
you
would
be
more
human,
and
your
house
of
life
would
be
better
supported
against
the
bad
days,
if
you
could,
and
did,
play
a
bit.
Whatever
rooms
you
might
add
to
your
house
of
life,
the
secret
of
enjoying
life
is
to
keep
adding.

Practical
Ways
to
Get
Motivated
Be
mindful
of
your
"why".
If
I
need
to
clean
the
floor,
but
I
really
don't
like
cleaning,
then
I
won't
feel
very
motivated
to
do
it.
However,
if
I
have
a
big
enough
reason
to
do
it—because
I'm
having
some
guests
to
come
over,
or
I
love
the
feeling
of
having
a
clean
floor,
then
that
"bigger
purpose"
can
be
strong
enough
to
get
me
to
act,
even
though
I
don't
enjoy
cleaning.
If
I
stay
mindful
of
why
I'm
doing
it,
I
can
get
motivated
to
do
it.
115.

Celebrate
your
successes.
It's
easy
to
get
down
on
yourself
because
you
haven't
reached
your
goal
yet.
You
may
overlook
all
of
the
hard
work
and
small
goals
that
you've
accomplished.
Remember
to
reward
yourself
and
to
celebrate
your
successes.
116.

In
the
same
way,
how
can
you
motivate
yourself
if
you're
not
going
to
reward
yourself
and
celebrate
your
successes
117.

Imagine
how
good
you'll
feel
when
you've
reached
your
goal.
Take
a
moment
and
think
about
how
you'll
feel
and
what
you'll
think
after
you've
achieved
it.
What
does
it
feel
like
118.

Focus
on
that
feeling,
and
use
it
to
drive
you
right
now
to
move
towards
your
goal.
Just
think
of
how
good
it
will
be.
Get
inspired.
Read
stories,
watch
movies,
listen
to
other
people
who
have
achieved
what
you
want
to
achieve.
Imagine
what
they
had
to
go
through
to
get
to
where
they
are.
Imagine
how
big
the
heart
is
of
some
of
your
biggest
heroes
and
how
badly
they
wanted
what
they
achieved.
119.

A.
Imagine
having
already
achieved
it.
B.
Get
help
and
support
when
you're
not
feeling
motivated.
C.
So
remind
yourself
of
why
you're
doing
what
you're
doing.
D.
What
kind
of
self-talk
would
you
use
to
motivate
yourself
E.
Let
them
inspire
you
to
access
your
own
great
desire
within.
F.
You
might
feel
proud,
happy,
satisfied,
or
any
other
emotion.
G.
Would
you
be
able
to
properly
train
a
dog
without

︿②︿
I've
already
gone
through
my
paycheck
for
the
week.
W:
You've
gone
through
all
your
money
so
quickly
I
thought
you
were
well-off.
(Text

W:
I
heard
you're
going
to
take
the
written
test
to
get
your
driver's
license
M:
Yeah.
W:
︿③︿
You've
been
driving
for
years.
There
shouldn't
be
any
problem.
M:
But
I
still
need
to
brush
up
on
traffic
rules
a
little
bit.
W:
You'll
be
fine.
Just
use
your
common
sense.
M:
Yeah,
but
sometimes
I
sense
things
wrong.
(Text

W:
You
look
so
concerned,
Jason.
What's
on
your
mind
M:
I'm
worried
about
the
interview
tomorrow.
It's
so
important
to
me.
︿④︿
You
know,
I've
been
looking
for
a
job
for
three
months,
and
this
is
my
first
interview.
W:
Don't
worry
too
much,
Jason.
Everything
will
work
out
just
fine.
M:
I
hope
so.
W:
Come
on,
Jason.
Let's
keep
our
fingers
crossed
and
hope
for
the
best.
(Text

M:
What's
going
on
between
you
and
Gary
Did
you
guys
have
a
fight
or
something
W:
I
can't
stand
him
any
more.
︿⑤︿
He
has
such
a
short
fuse
that
even
a
little
piece
of
friendly
advice
sets
him
off.
M:
So
what
did
you
tell
him
W:
I
told
him
that
︿⑤︿
if
he
could
be
more
patient,
he
would
be
more
popular.
M:
Not
unless
you
want
to
die!
(Text

W:
Hello,
Mr
Turnbull.
How
are
you
M:
Fine,
thanks.
How's
your
boy,
Jack
W:
He's
a
bit
tired.
You
know,
he
goes
to
school
at
eight
o'clock
every
morning.
He
doesn't
get
home
till
after
four.
︿⑥Then
he
does
his
homework
after
tea.
It
often
takes
him
a
couple
of
hours
to
finish
it.
M:
Poor
boy.
They
work
hard
at
school
nowadays,
don't
they
Does
he
like
it
W:
School,
you
mean
Yes,
he
does.
He
likes
his
teachers,
and
that
always
makes
a
difference.
M:
Yes,
it
does.
Does
he
go
to
school
by
bus
W:
︿⑦No,
he
walks.
He
likes
walking.
He
meets
some
of
his
friends
at
the
corner
and
they
go
together.
M:
What
does
he
do
when
it
rains
W:
My
husband
takes
him
in
the
car.
He
passes
the
school
on
the
way
to
the
office.

W:
︿⑧Mike,
come
and
look
at
this
painting
of
shrimp!
It
is
so
simple
yet
so
vivid!
M:
Yeah.
It
is
incredible!
Is
it
the
work
of
Qi
Baishi
W:
Yes,
it
is.
How
do
you
know
that
M:
Well,
Qi
is
famous
all
over
the
world,
isn't
he
Besides
I
am
quite
interested
in
Chinese
painting.
W:
Cool!
What
kind
of
Chinese
painting
do
you
prefer,
Xieyi
or
Gongtbi
M:
I
prefer
Xieyi
painting,
especially
the
landscape
paintings.
︿⑨I
can
always
sense
peace
and
harmony
from
those
landscape
paintings.
W:
That's
true.
Chinese
art
stresses
the
harmony
between
Man
and
Nature,
which
is
an
important
part
of
China's
traditional
culture.
M:
I
love
this
art
exhibition!
︿⑩This
is
a
kind
of
universal
expression
that
can
link
the
whole
world
together.
W:
So
do
I.
︿⑧Let's
go
to
other
areas
to
see
what
they
have
got,
shall
we
M:
OK.
(Text

W:
Hello,
Mike.
Already
back
︿ What
did
you
buy
at
the
market
M:
︿ A
lot
of
stuff.
Chinese
mountain-water
paintings,
clay
figurines,
seals,
Weifang
New
Year
pictures,
and
many
papercuts!
W:
︿ You
seem
to
have
bought
the
whole
market!
M:
Yeah.
I
really
wanted
to
do
so.
I
love
those
handicrafts,︿
︿ especially
the
papercuts.
W:
Papercuts
are
all
hand-made.
Let
me
see
the
papercuts
you
bought.
Fish,
dog,
tiger,
all
animals
M:
I
love
animals!
Besides,
aren't
animals
the
main
content
of
Chinese
papercuts
W:
That's
right.
Animals,
especially
Chinese
zodiac,
are
the
most
common
theme
in
papercuts.
But
there
are
other
themes,︿
︿ like
plants,
babies,
legendary
figures,
etc.
M:
︿ Then
I
will
buy
some
tomorrow.
(Text

W:
Did
you
prepare
for
the
proficiency
test
M:
I
wanted
to,
︿ but
I
didn't
know
how.
I
guess
I'll
just
have
to
do
my
best.
W:
I
don't
think
there's
really
any
way
to
prepare.
M:
I
agree.
︿ And
doing
poorly
is
not
necessarily
a
bad
thing.
W:
But
if
we
do
poorly,
we'll
have
to
take
special
classes.
M:
Yes,
but
we'll
need
those
classes.
︿ If
we
do
poorly
on
the
test,
then
we
do
need
extra
work.
W:
That's
true,
I
guess.
Classes
are
going
to
be
difficult
even
for
native
speakers.
M:
And
they're
going
to
be
a
murder
for
anyone
whose
English
isn't
very
good.
W:
You
can
say
that
again.
M:
Why
don't
we
join
an
English
club
to
practice
English
conversation
W:
Good
idea!
That
would
be
a
great
way
to
meet
people.
